It seemed like forever since they’d left the territory surrounding the Tower. The time they spend traveling was already taking it’s toll on Coan - there was too much time between contacts, and it allowed his mind to dwell on things he needed to put behind him. They were taking quite some time to get to Redcliffe, though they knew there was troubling brewing there. On top of that, he had to tell the Arl that one of his best men had fallen. He hated being the bearer of bad news, and the empty feeling his survivors guilt left him with, but he was doing his best to get over it. Talfryn was somewhat helpful, and Coan knew his attempts to get him to move past it were sincere, but all of the down time forced his mind right back to thinking about Billy, Brennan and everyone else they’d lost too soon. He wondered most if Sorin had heard news of his son - if he hadn’t, he didn’t want to be the one to tell him. It was too much. If the condition of the road as they got closer to the town was any indication of what was going on in the area, he wished they’d gotten there sooner. He remembered what it had been like to live in a smaller town as opposed to one with the size and buzz of Gwaren. He missed it - a lot - and he felt, very strongly, the need to help these people. Not only as a Warden and because that was now his position description, but because he knew how terrifying it was to be in an easily raided town during a Blight. They were there to do whatever the Arl needed them to. Still, he knew he had other duties. And he knew that, even under these circumstances, Teagan would look forward to meeting the new band of Wardens, but he was going to ruin the introduction with more bad news. They were met at the bridge crossing by a messenger - the Wardens were to go to the castle, their other companions would be led elsewhere to wait until their lodgings were prepared. He, along with the other Wardens - Talfryn adding himself to their number - were led away from the group by the Arl’s knights up to the castle with Noa bounding behind them. The town was in chaos. The people were rushing every which way, weapons piled at the front of Chantry for the militia, and there was an incessant buzz of worry, grief and anxiety - he hoped they’d arrived in time. The group of them were brought into the main hall where they were greeted by both the Arl and his knight, Ser Perth, with some relief. Introductions made, Teagan outlined what had been going on. Evacuation orders had been sent to the North and to those living on the outskirts of the arling. The senior knight commented on their boarder issues, having lost any good men, a seeing a halt in the flow of goods into the town. There was an orchard on the western edge of the province that had been occupied by a feisty unit of Darkspawn not easily taken by Redcliffe’s forces alone, and as much as he would have like to discuss an attack plan with them, their guests were first allowed to rest. While the other Wardens were dismissed and shown to their quarters or allowed to rejoin their companions back in town, Teagan asked that Coan stay behind to discuss more private matters. It had been some time since he’d been to Redcliffe, so there was some catching up to do - most notably his new found status as a Grey Warden. And while that conversation led to talks of what his mother was planning to do about his inheritance, Coan managed to turn it to the more serious news he needed get off of his chest. He gestured toward the box of arms and armor he and Talfryn had carried in, and explained who they’d belonged to. The disappointment on the Arl’s face was expected, but so was his ability to take it in stride. This was the beginning of the war, and while Russil was a good man, there were going to be casualties. As they discussed the Maker’s plans and how to go about informing Sorin of Brennan’s passing, another of the Arl’s knights entered the hall with urgency, bringing a halt to their conversation. |
