Night was beginning to fall, the last of the sunset streaming through the trees. Lukaer feared they would have to stop soon and make camp. Another day, another failure. He was getting more and more frustrated with their lack of progress. Since they had set out from the Bannorn, they had heard bits and pieces of rumors and hearsay and yet they seemed no further along in their self appointed quest than they had been at the beginning. Lukaer tried to hide his disappointment and frustration from Mat, lest it poison his brother's all-encompassing enthusiasm. He wasn't entirely sure he had succeeded, though Mathieu never mentioned anything.
A farmer they had met earlier that day claimed to have seen several Grey Wardens and their companions heading West on the road they were currently following. The farmer had said that he and Mathieu were only a few hours behind the Wardens but they had been walking all day and had yet to pass a soul on the road. That is, other than the large dog that Mathieu had made the mistake of sharing some of his lunch with and was now trotting along behind them, seemingly without any intention of going his own way. Mat thought it was funny and indulged the animal whenever he got the chance, sharing bits of meat when they stopped for meals and scratching it behind the ears whenever it came close enough. Despite the scowls and eye rolls and general disapproval sent the animal's way, Luka found that he rather enjoyed the dog's presence, as well.
Still, their constant failure to find the Grey Wardens that they were looking for were starting to wear on his nerves. He knew that they were searching for the metaphorical needle in a haystack, but they kept having farmers and traders swear that they had seen them. But the Wardens always seemed to be just out of the brothers' reach and they were going to have to stop soon. The sun was setting and another day was finishing without sign of the Wardens. Lukaer scowled as he started to look to the side of the road, thinking about going off a little ways to find a place to camp for the night. As he looked about, he saw the glow of a campfire through the trees and his heart leapt in his chest. Maybe they were... he stopped that train of thought, trying not to get him hopes up. It would do no good to jump to conclusions. That would only get you disappointed.
His hand moved to his sword, just in case. Though it was more likely this fire belonged to a group of travelers, Luka couldn't be certain until they met face to face. Until that time they could be bandits, or worse. Best keep their wits about them so as to not get caught off guard. He motioned to Mat, directing his attention to the fire. He made a motion to keep quiet and then called out to the travelers. "Ho there!" he yelled, trying to get their attention. "We saw your fire, my brother and I. May we come closer?" He fell silent and waited for a reply.
