Evening Prophet; 1 August 1980.
Deaths and Injuries reported from Ministry sources. Sunday afternoon shoppers on Diagon Alley found themselves accompanied by masked Death Eaters as they moved along the street taking care of their usual back to school shopping. Magical Law Enforcement was dispatched to the scene immediately and the Ministry’s brave Aurors were embroiled in a bitter conflict between the Death Eaters and vigilante civilians that leapt to join the fray. "One moment I was sitting there eating my ice cream sundae," a woman who requested that the Prophet hide her identity told reporters. "And the next I was staring into this big mask, easy as you please and I just dropped the ice cream and ran. Didn't think twice about it." Approximately fifteen minutes after one in the afternoon You Know Who appeared on the Alley himself joined only minutes later by Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Sources tell the Daily Prophet that You Know Who and Dumbledore moved down Knockturn Alley away from the main fight on Diagon and were seen together on that Alley shortly after. The altercation was brief, but left the southern end of Diagon Alley in chaos. Many shop windows were broken, with displays and furniture damaged, and the wall of Flourish and Blotts nearest Knockturn has been knocked out. While Flourish and Blotts remains standing, estimates are that it will have limited hours and access for the next week. The Ministry has already promised extra patrols on the Alley throughout this busy shopping season, noting that extra MLE patrols began in the previous week allowed the reaction time to be much swifter than it might have otherwise been. "It is important that people remain calm and that those who live on the Alley and its nearby residential streets remain indoors this evening so as to not impede clean-up work and investigators by Magical Law Enforcement," says Aidan McKinnon, Auror. There are reports of a few deaths and several dozen injuries but the Ministry has not released names to the public at this time. |
