Who: Seda Utheriel & Corporal Urban
When: 9:39 Ferventis 9
Where: Imperial Highway
Rating: Violence ensues
Summary: Sometimes, we work for bad people... and sometimes there are worse people.
It had been three days since they had set up camp on the Highway between Calenhad and West Hill, and the sun had not relented for a single day since. It was starting to look like the information they had been given was not quality, and the known Apostate had made plans other than heading to West Hill. That didn't stop Knight Corporal Urban or the other two Templars in his command from halting passersby. The relation between their actions and the actions of common highwaymen and bandits did not pass Urban unnoticed, and were surprisingly easy for the commoners they stopped to pick up on.
On the plus side, they were not constantly on the move, which meant he didn't have to constantly break down and set up camp every morning and night as they hunted apostates through the wilderness. But, without that structure, it made the days longer. Luckily, Ser Haest always traveled with a deck of cards. They were well worn, aged from years of 'culture' applied to them throughout Ser Haest's duty. The corporal was almost certain that Haest had actually managed to memorize the wear on each card, giving her an unfair advantage in only every card game... and as such only played for a few bits at a time. The alternative was that Urban had almost legendary un-luck with card drawing, and Haest could read him like an open book.
Today was beginning to look the same as the past three. The punishing sun trying to burn the Light of the Maker directly through their bodies, card hands that never paid off as well as Urban hoped, and the occasional cart to search for the apostate they suspected was traveling this route. The position was picked specifically because the surrounding swamp made long distance traveling non-negotiable for all but the most savvy... and impossible for anyone traveling with more than just themselves. The problem for bandits taking this position was just how easy it was for the guard to patrol, since it was such a notable chokepoint.
If there was no return in the next two days, they'd have to abandon the checkpoint entirely. There was supposed to be a supply yesterday, and as the midday sun raised higher in the sky, Urban's hopes that it would show up today were sinking ever lower. They had enough rations to last the next two days as well as enough to get them back to West Hill, but not much longer beyond that.
