It was clear there were benefits to travelling in a larger group. Dinner could be cooked by someone with actual skill, more people assured more company for those who wanted it, and any bandits would think twice about approaching them. There were also downsides, more tents to pitch, more mouths to feed and the one that grated on Emil the most - more people. It was not obvious how the Warden Commander had supposed that such a large company could travel freely through the land without raising suspicions. Then, there was power in numbers in this way too, because although it was memorable, not everyone had the courage to look twice on a motley crew of armed people.
They had finished the first leg of their voyage, that from Amaranthine to Lake Calenhad. Except for a sudden thunderstorm, little had bothered them, but the gear had dried again and the sun was out. All in all a pleasant time of year to be out hunting fantasies.
The lake lay blue and glittering in front of them. To Emil it was startling in both size and colour, because he came from a land with little water. The Tower lay in the middle, rising proudly and imperiously over the landscape, built in designs he had never seen before. It certainly lent some plausibility to the suggestion that it was built to house ancient artefact, because if nothing else it certainly looked the part.
Their hunt was made difficult - and rather ridiculous - by the fact that they had no clues to the location of the object, if it even existed and how they would retrieve it if it did. They had spent two days combing through the eastern side of the lake shore. It had been a frustrating hunt, filled with sheep skeletons found with shouts of excitement and oddly shaped pieces of rock that made everyone gather round in seconds.
So far they had found nothing, no further clues, no proof of battles fought long ago, no nothing.
The sun was high in the sky, and they had water and Tower to the west, the tall structure feeling so close as if the Mages contained therein might look out the window and see them. It wasn't that close, but the thought of them doing so made a shiver of distaste pass down Emil's spine.
"We'll look around some more before taking a break," he shouted, pitching his voice loud enough to be heard but not to carry. He had learned some of his lessons in interacting with Fereldans during their last mission, but Emil wasn't a man likely to present his commands as suggestions. "Anything that could be of interest." Please Andraste, no more animal bones or amusingly shaped rocks.
