Tournament: Combat, Round One

Summary: It’s the first round of fighting for the 10th anniversary rebuilding of Vigil’s Keep
It was now one o’clock, and even for Solis it was becoming hot. Perhaps it was the heat rising off the crowd, or the press of bodies stifling what would otherwise be a cool sea-breeze. He tilted his head back and wished there were more clouds in the sky, but it was a clear, perfect day. No hope of rain to get him out of this job.
Not that it should have been his job. The Warden-Commander himself should be leading the proceedings, but had passed the job off to his seneschal without a thought. All Dougal got by explanation was “Sorry, something came up, but would you run the tournament, thanks!” and a pleading smile before the Commander of the Grey ran off. Leaving Dougal Aldren in charge.
He put on a brave face, and raised his hands to quiet the crowd. He cleared his throat, but there was still a smattering of talking, so he cleared his throat louder. No difference. He finally asked, “Quiet please!” Attention turned to him, all eyes were on him now.
“This is the first Warden Tournament,” As far as he knew, this was the first even of any sort like it ever hosted by the Grey Wardens. Certainly, there was the Grand Tourney in the Free Marches, but this was novel. That would explain the turnout. He was proud to be a part of this, of Vigil’s Keep. It was one new experience, another one for the history books, time and again.
“The rules are simple, fight without unduly harming your opponent until one of you is disarmed or unable to continue fighting. The winner will move on to the next round, which will start on the morrow. Following armed combat, we will have un-armed fighting. For those fighting, any attack excepting those to the groin are allowed. Wins are determined by pinning or otherwise incapacitating your opponent until the count of ten. These fights are open to all who signed up over the past week, and come from many countries and walks of life, may the best man - or woman - win!”
The crowd roared their agreement.
Once the sound died down, Dougal realized he had forgotten to mention the Mage combat. This was why he was better suited at his desk. He felt a surge of longing for that small room on the second floor that he called his own. No matter, he raised his hands again, “After normal combat, we will be having a combat for Mages from the Tower.” This statement was not met with nearly as much resounding approval, “In light of recent events, recent fears and worries, we wanted to show to the people of Ferelden that mages - our mages - are in control. Thus, these fights are all about controlling themselves, every mage will fight another mage using just enough magic to hurt but not harm the other, and will continue fighting for as long as they can.”
There was a smattering of interest, but not nearly as much as for standard combat. Dougal cleared his throat in abashment, before saying, “Let the main event of the tournament begin!”
