Grant looked down at the book he'd brought with him, eyes skimming over the same two paragraphs he'd been trying to read for the last half hour. Sighing, he inserted a bookmark, closed the book, and placed it on the table in favor of his coffee. Though the coffee shop wasn't nearly as hip as the one a block closer to the office, he had quickly decided that this one was to his preference, with its real ceramic mugs and plates, the homemade baked goods that were made in the open at the back of the shop, and the pleasant older couple who both owned and ran it, with the help of a few other family members. He glanced up at the front counter, where what appeared to be a grandchild grinned as her grandfather showed her how to use the old-fashioned cash register.
His smile was faint, but it was still there when he looked down at the cover of his book again. He was under no illusions about his melancholy mood today. Prior to his transfer to New York, he'd gifted his wife and daughter with a family trip to Greece across the school holidays. Given the need for his presence sooner, rather than later, he'd reluctantly recruited his sister-in-law to go in his stead. It was disappointing for all of them—except maybe Katie, who was at that age that she didn't much need her dad around all the time—and it meant that he was spending his first two weeks in New York alone. Mostly, he was so caught up in his work that he'd been able to ignore it. The weekend had been harder, though, and with Christmas tomorrow, this was an extra long one, too.
The scent of a fresh batch of strudel filled the air, and that was enough to make him smile a little more. He'd bring them both here when they were back. Even being an independent 13-year-old wasn't enough to keep Katie from liking that. Leaving his table claimed by his belongings, he joined the relatively short line to get his own piece of the treat now. He shared a smile with the man in front of him, who instinctively glanced back at Grant's presence. "We've got good timing getting in line. I've seen that stuff disappear in five minutes flat." He nodded at the tray of strudel.
