Kent sat back, and really had to think about it. “I don’t think I’ve ever really had a vacation in my adult life. Once I left our school, I had to bust my- I had to work really hard to transition into… regular school, and then to get my prerequisites for vet school in Phoenix. I’ve been at it since, so I kind of get it about knowing when to stop. Guess I haven’t really had to, before, never got to that point. Hadn’t gotten to it. Now that I’m doing this, though? Maybe I should really look into actually utilizing my vacation time.”
It was like a dam had broken between his brain and his mouth, and there was very little chance he could shore it up again while talking to Grant- at least at this moment. His was the first sympathetic ear he’d encountered since leaving Salem, and, honestly, it was still way more than he rightly deserved. Kent was aware that his face had gone hot again, and he finished off his pastry.
He was a little glad for the topic change, even though it was still about what he thought might be his least favorite place on Earth right now. “No, there weren’t that many in the town or the surrounding areas. Greater Mass and New England? Oh, yes. I did mod-contract work in the area on the side, and I was generally called in every couple of weeks to help with containment. I didn’t mind it as a side gig, though. Kept things interesting, at least.”
He chuckled at the simplicity of the screen name, and offered Grant a smile. “Nothing wrong with that. Makes it easy to remember.” Kent glanced at his empty plates and coffee cup, and then sighed faintly. “Well, thanks for the company, Grant,” he said as he stood and started pulling his coat back on, “but I have paper that’s not going to work itself, unfortunately. It was really nice to meet you. Hopef- Maybe I’ll see you around the offices or here, and I’ll definitely drop you a line on W-Net if I hear about any apartments.”
