Character(s): Eric, Elena
Rating: tbd
Cautions/Warnings: language
What: wtf is it snowing in the tropics
Location: primarily Eric's cave
Approximate Date: starts the day of the blizzard
Status: Closed

Eric wasn't really sleeping. Dozing a bit on and off, but true sleep eluded him and had since his bizarre arrival on this even more bizarre island. In the few days since he'd awoken in what residents called the arrival hut, for that was where nearly all new arrivals turned up, he'd learned that things here were far more unusual than he'd suspected.

None of the long-term residents he'd met were at all surprised that crafting tools had turned up in his cave. And while most were spectacularly unhelpful, he did manage to ascertain that all had had one thing--and only one thing--in common. All were in the vicinity of the Bermuda Triangle when they disappeared.

He heard someone approaching but as the sun was still out, he couldn't go see who. He'd heard that there were daywalkers here--vampires who were able to be out in the sunlight with no ill effects. But he'd yet to meet one to find out how it was done.

'Hello?' he called, sitting up in his dirt bed.

Elena hadn't left with the intentions of finding Eric. Hell, she wouldn't have had an idea of where to start looking even if she was trying to find him. Unfortunately fate loved to play cruel tricks on Elena, God forbid she ever have a vampire free day. After taking many wrong turns on her way out of the area with all the huts, she had given up and decided it was time to just start exploring the island completely.

It was much bigger than she had anticipated.

By the time she had arrived at the caves, her dress was torn and she was exhausted, stumbling somewhat as she wandered down unknowingly towards Eric's cave. She hadn't drank anything in a couple of days, hadn't eaten in longer and in hindsight (so useful to her now) maybe she should have just stayed by the huts. Whoever had built those had to have some idea of where those things were. Elena? The closest she had come to living in the wild had been camping in her backyard with Bonnie and Caroline. Staggering into the entrance of the cave, Elena heard a voice and immediately stopped.

"Hi?" she called back quickly, voice a little hoarse, and she coughed hard to clear it before she spoke again, "Hello is there someone in here?"

Perhaps she was just going crazy. She had heard of that happening to people who were dehydrated. At least if she was going crazy she was hallucinating company. That might make finding food and water a bit more pleasant. But first, the cave offered a break from the sun, and somewhere relatively flat to sit, so she just kept walking on in, calling out again as she did, "Are you a real person or in my head?"

Eric smirked. It was the pretty little vervain girl. 'It's Eric. I certainly hope I'm real. I haven't fed you my blood, so you shouldn't be dreaming about me, anyhow. You need to come back here. The sun's out--I can't go past the lean-to.'

He no sooner spoke the words when the sunlight changed. Disappeared, actually. 'Okay that was... odd.' He dared stand and move forward a bit, peering out--for some reason, he only got burned if the sun's rays touched him.

'Hope you'd planned on staying--storm's coming,' he told her.

"Eric?" Elena walked a little further forward but stayed rather determinedly in the sunlight. This time she had a definite advantage and dehydration or not, she was determined to use it. She didn't even really notice what a state she must look - shoes lost long ago, dress in tatters with varying tiny cuts on her exposed skin from branches and bushes. It was hard to concentrate on anything at that point in time, really, but then everything darkened and she looked out with a frown.

"A storm?" She took a step backwards to match Eric's one forward, almost unconsciously really. She wasn't actively trying to stay away from him, it just seemed like a good idea. "No, there can't be a storm, all my stuff must be on the other side of the island!"

She audibly groaned, rubbing her eyes. A small stumble backwards let her know that her balance was completely off, and she opened her eyes again and fixed Eric with a look that clearly said 'this is only because I have to', before she asked, "Do you have any water?"

'Yes, a storm. And a rather nasty one at that I'd guess.' He frowned a bit as the air gusted in. It was decidedly cooler than it had been.

'You're not going after your stuff. You wouldn't make it there before the storm hits. I'll go get it. And water, since I have none. Stay put. And sit down before you fall over.'

He left the cave hurriedly, to claim her belongings and procure (okay, steal) some water. He was back in less than 5 minutes, frowning even more deeply. The air was notably cooler than when he'd left.

'Here,' he said, dropping the items at her feet, except the water, which he'd handed to her. 'Drink while I bring some wood inside,' he ordered.

Elena sat down without argument, and just let out a small noise of exasperation as Eric practically disappeared from the cave. Vampires, really. Always thinking they knew best. Granted she wasn't exactly in a position to argue the benefits of her trying to make her way back without any knowledge of direction at all, and she just rest her head against her knees as she waited for him to return. The drop of her bag made her jump slightly, but the water being offered to her took immediate priority and she took it quickly. Barely able to mumble out a 'thank you' before she brought the liquid to her lips, she managed a few large gulps before she had to stop for air.

"Wood? Why do you need wood, it's already too hot here," she commented idly, swallowing more water in between the sentences. She had to find a water supply, and soon too. This was a lucky break but she couldn't always rely on strange yet handsome vampires to save her in the nick of time (even if that was all the last year of her life had consisted of).

'The temperature is falling. Quickly. If you come here you'll note how much colder it is already.' He made quick work of bringing the wood into the cave, not bothering to stack it neatly until it was in.

He was just bringing in the last armload when he froze. 'What the fuck?' he asked, staring at the blinding white mess at the cave entrance.

'How is this even possible?'

Elena ignored the comment about the temperature falling. He was a vampire, it was probably just because he didn't have a blood flow. The island was a typical Mediterranean temperature, certainly not cold. She heard the expletive and her head tipped up from the water briefly, and then remained there as she saw just what had surprised Eric so much. Jumping to her feet, she moved towards him and the cave entrance quickly.

"What the hell is going on here?" she asked, glancing at him briefly before staring out at the snow. That was impossible, she had been pouring with sweat only minutes ago. Walking closer to the entrance, she stuck her hand out enough for it to be pelted briefly with snow, and tugged it back in sharply as she laughed humourlessly, "Yeah, that's snow alright. What are we going to do?"

"We're going to stay put. I can't see see 5 feet ahead. I'll build a fire and a second lean-to, as well. Won't take more than an hour or two. Once we have those, we'll be fairly snug.' He cut some wood and laid it in the fire pit, then shaved some tinder. The fun part was getting the tinder to catch. He didn't have a flint, but he was a viking--he could make a spark with a stone and his adz. It took some time to coax a flame from the sparks, but soon a fire was burning.

'Stay here and keep warm' he ordered as he went to construct a hasty lean-to.

Honestly, Elena was lucky that Eric was here. She couldn't keep a fire going to save her life, nor did she have any real survival skills at her side. She would probably have died out there if she hadn't stumbled upon him in this cave. She held her hands out towards the fire slightly, stretching and giving a small sigh as she watched the cave entrance. A blizzard? Really? It seemed so ridiculous, but sure enough it was happening. A Mediterranean island was having a blizzard.

"How long do you think this will last?" she called out as she rubbed her hands together. The cold had definitely spread now, and Elena was cursing her decision to use her only thing close enough to a jumper on that apparently useless smoke signal. "Not long, right?"

Eric shook his head, even as he swung the axe. 'You're asking me a question that I couldn't have answered even back in our world. Blizzards can last a few hours, or they can go three or four days. As I don't have food--for either of us--here, we'd better hope it's shorter.'

He finished the second lean-to and carried it over to the fire area. 'If you're not squeamish--or a member of PETA--I've got some pelts you can wrap up in,' he said. 'I've been skinning the animals I drink from--figured they'd come in handy for something.'
