Click-tock, click-tock, click-tock. An ancient pendulum clock irrationally kept the seconds like an elderly man unable to discard outdated habits. Deneb puttered about the kitchen like a fussy mother whose home has been rearranged in her absence. The matronly Imagin had even located a ruffly apron not unlike the one he usually wore while cooking. Pots bubbled quietly in the background occasionally joined by the soft drone of Deneb conversing with himself. The kitchen's buttery lighting and clean surfaces seemed the echo of a former life. Absence of rain pattering on concrete and loudspeaker announcements made the room strangely still. This universe, filthy and treacherous as it was, had begun to feel like home. Yuuto didn't belong in his own world and hadn't for some time. He rested his cheek on the polished tabletop but could not unwind enough to close his eyes. Too long had been spent on unwavering alert for gang activity and Ops raids. Even laying his head down made the vulnerable skin at the back of his neck tingle with anticipation of a blow.
Yuuto didn't much care for the sense of immobility in the TARDIS. It didn't shake over tracks as time-trains did. Though your teacup was in frequent danger of tipping over the vibrations and sharp turns were like the bucking of a ship at sea; they comfortingly reminded passengers that they were on their way to somewhere (and somewhen). Not so with this vessel--- or not yet, at least. The Rider longed to reclaim Zeroliner and control over his movements. The only person he had ever willingly played adjuvant to was himself. And even then it was done so grudgingly. Ideally, he was alone and free to perform his duties. Saving all of time with Ryōtarō had made working with another person possible under duress but he certainly never enjoyed it. Not to mention Deneb was still operating under the delusion that his Contract Holder needed friends.
"We should invite someone else to eat. I saw a very friendly-looking person passing in the corridor." Deneb suggested suddenly, as if reading Yuuto's thoughts. (Which was a possibility.)
The young brunette raised his head to scowl at the impassive visage of his companion.
"You think everyone looks friendly. Even things with horns and fangs. Idiot." Yuuto did not return his head to the table lest he be forced to restrain the insatiable amicability of his Imagin.
At least the polite demon had the sense not to try and gift candy to Shivers. Though that had not stopped him from thoroughly humiliating his master the first time they met River Song. (It was a debacle involving possession and an attempted recreation of Urataros's wooing techniques.) Thankfully the woman had forgiven him when she discovered that his body had not been his own. Deneb presently sighed with the eternal suffering of a parent and returned to seasoning dinner.
