Understanding the Magic of Earth
Understanding the Magic of Earth
Earth is associated with prosperity and abundance, representing the beauty and sensuality of the physical world.
Ancient people relied on the land for their survival, they believes in an Earth Mother Goddess who provided food, warmth and shelter. Figurines in her image have been found in every continent. Stone circles, such as Avebury in England were built as temples to her, as were ritual mounds such as Silburry Hill. The Fertility of the Earth gave birth to important rituals and, even today, most of the World's religious festivals are held on dates considered sacred in the agricultural calendar.
Seasons of fruitfulness
The seasons change as the Earth orbits the Sun, creating a framework for magic. Focussing spells on the seasonal ebb and flow increases their power, and attunes you to the earth's energy. Perform magic to begin new projects in the spring, energise and protect in the summer, harvest and consolidate in the autumn, and release negative feelings and fears in the winter.
Earth in Myth and Legend
The Virgin
Many places where the Earth Mother Goddess was worshipped are now dedicated to the Madonna, such as Guadeloupe in Mexico. Festivals to the virgin still include decorating her image with fruits and flowers, and even carrying her statue out to bless the fields with fertility.
Earth's Womb
Holed stones symbolising the womb of the Earth Mother are considered lucky and are used as charms all over the world to encourage fertility.
Earth Mother
The Earth Mother had many names, for excample, she was called Frigg in Scandinavia, Isis in Ancient Egypt and Ishtar in the Middle East.
Associations of the Earth
The earth signs of the Zodiac, Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn - all mirror times of the year with strong, earthy associations.
Taurus: The Sun is in Taurus during the sensual love festiva; of Beltane, the traditional time for animal husbandry and for lovers to choose their partners.
Virgo: Virgo marks the height of the Harvest. This sign witnesses a celebration of abundance and a time to enjy the fruits of the Summer.
Capricorn: When the Sun is in Capricorn the earth is bare and even appears to be barren. There is much work going on beneath the surface. However, it is a time to prepare the soil for the new seeds, for the cycle of the year ahead.

Practical people
People born under earth signs are practical and creative. They are sensual and cultured, enjoying fine food and earthy pleasures. If you weren't born under an earth sign but want to take on some of their traits, try wearing jewellery set with their birthstones or spending time outside in nature.
Earth Charm Magic
In many spells and rituals, a bowl of salt, sand or soil can be used to represent the fertile energies of the earth. These correspondences can also be used to ground your magic or harness the fertility of this element. A stone or crystal may also be used to symbolise the rocky solidity of the earth.
Buried in the earth
Burying an earth charm, such as a crystal pendant, a touchstone or a clay symbol of the Goddess, in a pot of soil for a full cycle of the moon will help charge it with the power of creativity and manifestation. You can then use it to attract wealth, health and any other phisical energies into your life.
Colours of the Earth
Earthy colours are greens and browns -shades that symbolise nature's fertility. Money is often printed in these colours -- in the hope that wealth will grow!
Coloured crystals
Wearing earthy coloured crystals such as chrysicola and tiger's eye will help protect your health and develop your sensuality.
Earth Candles
Light an earth-coloured candle, such as a red-cinnamon candle, if you are starting out on a new venture to attract luck and future prosperity.
Tarot
In the Tarot, the suit of pentacles represents the power of the earth, and like the element, this suit is concerned with creativity, money and health. These cards symbolise your life's work, and the rewards you will receive from balancing effort with payment.
Bless the power of the Earth!
The Earth is dry and barren until heated by the Sun's light, germinated by the wind and watered by the rain. Use other elements to activate Earth's power and fertile energies:
With fire: Clay is a fragile material until exposed by the heat of a kiln. Make earth charms from clay and ask your local art centre to fire them to add dynamism to their earthy nature.
With Air: To solve creative blocks go to a high hill on a windy day. With your feet on the earth and your head in the clouds you will become a channel for practical solutions.
With Water: Water and Earth combined are the creative elements providing the nutrients for all life. Take a walk in the rain to fertilise your imagination and your emotional growth.
