CASTING SIMPLE SPELLS
CASTING SIMPLE SPELLS
Many young people have written to me asking me to send them spells or help them cast a spell. This section is to give some basic help. The first thing you need to know is that you don't just get a spell from someone else that is powerful. Whether a spell is powerful or not depends on the person casting it, and once you understand the basics of casting spells, you can make your own Anytime you want.
Basically, the universe and everything in it, including you and me, are all energy. Whenever you think or feel something very strongly, you generate extra energy. If you think or feel about someone else, you program the energy to go to that person (the same for things or ideas, which are also kinds of energy, like getting to take a trip or getting some money). To cast your basic spell you need ...
(1) To be alone, unless someone else is helping you with the spell,
(2) Have no distractions, like noise.
(3) Create an atmosphere where your inner powers can come out, such as lighting a candle (preferably not black, brown or gray) and burning some incense. Your spell needs a chant you can say out loud repeatedly, and it should both rhyme and state your purpose or desire. You want to create a ball of energy that you program to go and carry out your desire. This is sometimes called a thought form and sometimes a Witch's fetch. Do this by holding you hands about six inches apart, palms facing each other, slightly curved. If you very slowly move them slightly in and out together, You will feel a slight pressure between them -- this is the energy that is forming naturally because energy always flows out of each hand. Do this and try to feel the energy gently breathing or pulsing, until you can feel a definite presence between your hands. If you have trouble feeling the energy, try holding your breath without straining while you visualize the energy building up and continue moving your hands. Then visualize strongly what you desire and repeat your chant out loud over and over. Some Witches repeat the chant nine times, others until they feel it is done (this has the advantage of not requiring you to keep track of how many times you chant). When you are ready to release your thought form, open you hands and release it as if you were freeing a bird in your hands and mentally send it off to work your will. If you have trouble visualizing, try staring at a candle flame in a darkened room, then close your eyes and see the negative effect image of the flame in your mind's eye; this practice will help you to visualize your desire more easily.
This is the basic form a casting a spell, and as you can see, you can make up any that you want for yourself. You can practice making stronger thought forms by building a ball of energy between your hands and throwing it at the back of someone's head when they're not looking. When you can make strong thought forms, the person will feel something and turn around to look at you.
Another form of this kind of spell is called the burnable. In this form, you take a piece of paper and write your chant on it, then charge it with your energy by either holding it between your palms or placing it before you and holding your palms facing it; then will your energy to flow and visualize the energy charging (building up on) the paper. It helps to anoint the paper with
an oil, and you can keep the paper and charge it over and over to get more energy on it (don't show it to anyone, or let anyone touch it or know about it - their energy will contaminate it). When you are ready to release your spell, burn the paper while chanting the chant on it and visualizing what you want.
If you are trying to get something that requires a lot more energy than you put into your spell, you may want to repeat you spell until you get the desired result.
A good basic setup would be white candle(s), sandalwood incense and sandalwood oil; this is good for all spells in general. There are correlations to things you can add for power, such the right color of paper, the right color of candle, the right kind of incense, the right day of the week, etc. Learning these things (or writing them down for future reference to create a Book of Shadows) is part of learning to work magick. Further developments in basic spell casting include casting a Circle, using spirit help (as in the elementals or gods and/or goddesses), and increasing your power through meditation on
personal development (as in using the Chakras or psychic centers). Some of this information can be found in my section on Low Magick. Please note that since the overall purpose of my site is to talk about High Magick or Alchemy, my information on Low Magick is not extensive.
Remember, everything is energy, and any energy you send out may return to you, so be careful. Those who follow the path of Wicca often quote the Law of Three (invented by Gerald Gardner, along with Wicca), but the much older Law of Karma and your own intuitive common sense should not be overlooked when casting your spells.
In all spells, whenever you are using the assistance of powers other than your own, these powers are invoked from the top down, that is, from the highest to the lowest. Typically, you may call upon one (or more) of the gods and/or goddesses of classical antiquity, followed by the appropriate elemental. When using gods and goddesses, one should avoid finding the most unique or little known if you want your spell to work. This is because whether or not the gods and goddesses actually refer to some universal force (something you may not be able to determine with certainty), the belief and worship of them by many people has built up a powerful group thought form called an egregore. This power will most likely be the source of any real help you get for your spell when you invoke the corresponding god and/or goddess. Thus, the more popular and widely worshipped the god or goddess, the more power will be available for your spell.
One popular method of multiplying your chances of getting more power for your spell is to invoke several gods and/or goddesses that all seem to correspond to the same type of energy you seek to use. A few things you want to avoid here are calling upon too many powers or mixing powers that are not similar to each other; either of these practices will decrease the effectiveness of your spell, and could bring you unfortunate results.
Avoid using any that you are not comfortable in using. It is possible to add other powers to your spell, such as angelic beings, which would be invoked after the gods/goddess and before the elementals; however, I have found that this also lends itself to "too many cooks spoil the brew." Doing research to make a list of the gods and goddess of different cultures that correspond to similar energies is one of the basic additions to the Book of Shadows. In addition to the powers you call upon, the color of your candles and type on incense and anointing oil are also powerful additions, as are any magickal type jewelry you have charged with energy, such as a ring or necklace.
