Who: Remus Lupin, [open to] Sirius Black, James Potter, and Peter Pettigrew
What: Full Moon antics
Where: Gryffindor dorms, then the Shrieking Shack and castle grounds
When: Night of the full moon. February 7th, 1977
Status: Incomplete
Rating: PG, maybe PG-13

No matter how many times he went through it, Remus never got used to the pain that the full moon would bring. It was the morning of the full moon, and though the sun was rising, Remus could still feel aching in his limbs. He'd not gotten much sleep during the night, having shut his curtains and put a silencing charm on them so as not to wake the others in his discomfort. His joints were stiff as he sat up and opened the curtains of his bed. It was always so difficult to greet the day with a smile when it was full moon day. He'd not made mention of it to the others, which wasn't really anything new. Remus never spoke about the full moon if he could avoid it, because he truly disliked bringing it up. He was grateful, unimaginably so, to his friends for having disciplined themselves so hard to learn the magic required to become Animagi, but he still felt guilty about the whole thing. It was hard enough that they knew his secret and had to carry the burden of it. Participating in the full moons wasn't something he expected of them, for he wanted them to have their own lives that didn't revolve around his lycanthropy. Selfishly, though, he did feel comforted that they were with him and kept him from ripping himself apart as always had before they joined him.

After a loud yawn, Remus pushed himself up onto shaky legs. The others would be awake soon enough; he was almost always the first one awake in the mornings. Though it hurt his arms and joints to do so, he bent over his bed and started to make it. Pain was going to be a constant companion that day, he knew, and that wasn't an exaggeration. After a few steadying breaths, he raised back up and very slowly made his way over to his trunk. It was harder to walk than he realized, but he was hoping he would not have to use the aid of a cane. A sixteen year old boy walking with the aid of a cane wasn't exactly inconspicuous. Nevertheless, he would know if he needed it. For the time being, he just set to start looking for an outfit. Loose fitting clothes were the only option as far as he was concerned.

That morning was quite unusual for James, for he had already been awake, sitting comfortably in his sleeping shorts within his four poster, hidden behind the curtains and writing out some ridiculously sappy and very un-James-like prose with a certain redhead's face in mind. Valentine's Day was creeping up all too soon and even if Lily didn't intend to acknowledge his efforts, he would preemptively show her, as always, that he was thinking about her.

When he heard the slight movements and noises of a trunk being opened, he popped his head out from within his curtains, calling out lightly, "Oi, is that you, Padf —" But when he blearily saw who it was, he shifted his tone to a questioning one. "Er, Moony, what're you doing up so early? Had a bad dream?"

He thought he'd been pretty quiet, but perhaps he hadn't been the first to arise that morning after all. Remus heard the rustling of sheets and the sound of curtains pulling a bit. He'd hoped to make it out of the room before the others woke up. It was always awkward for him to be seen on this day by anyone, because he hated drawing attention to himself. There was no hiding how pale and worn he looked, and a night without sleep surely wasn't making him look any better. He didn't have to hide it from his best mates anymore, not since second year, but that didn't mean he liked them to see what his condition did to him. He wanted them to remember him healthy, not like this.

"Something like that," he replied calmly, though there was a pained edge to his tone. Remus started to try to remove his sleep shirt, but his arms were terribly sore and stiff. It wasn't going to happen. No matter. "Is that why you're up so early?" It was a typical defense mechanism. Remus always tended to shift the attention off himself and on to others. If he didn't have to talk about it, then he could focus on other things, like getting dressed, or in this case getting dressed.

Sirius was a light sleeper. He liked to fake the teenage indolence, lying in bed and fake snoring long after the sun rose, but the truth was that, if he managed a full night of sleep at all, he woke up at the slightest sound. So when James and Remus began to talk he was almost instantly up.

He pulled his curtains carefully and peered out into the room. Remus, he noticed, was having trouble lifting his arms. Sirius felt his stomach drop and that solid pit of anger he always felt when Remus was hurt settle into his stomach. Luckilly he knew exactly what to do.

Without saying a word to either of his friends he hauled himself out of bed and rummaged through his trunk for a moment till he located his favorite navy blue cardigan (which he privately called his Moony shirt.) It was cashmere, infinetly soft, and buttoned up the front. He cast a wordless heating charm on it, then padded over to Remus and casually, but gently, drapped it across the other boys shoulders.

"Morning," he said, keeping his voice soft but cheerful, before heading back to his trunk to find clothing for himself.

While usually a heavy, and late sleeper, Peter had awoken abruptly to the sound of voices and the activity that signaled in the new morning. Shifting in place, he raised his hand and tugged the the edge of the curtain back, to squint -- his eyes were blurry, after only just waking -- at the moving figure that was Sirius Black, and the stationary Remus.

"Wasss going on?" He asked tiredly. Peter sat upright in bed, one hand moving to comb through his brown hair, as he yawned widely, just before opening the curtain completely, casting a dismayed glance towards the window.

It seemed too early to be up and quite so energetic for Peter's taste. The idea that something actually was wrong had yet to enter his mind, the Full Moon and the expected discomfort that it wrought on his friend's body far from mind.

And, suddenly, everyone was awake. Remus' attempt at being discrete had completely failed and instead of sneaking out quietly, his friends were all awake. A rush of warmth spread across his cheeks as he felt the weight of Sirius' sweater draping over his shoulders. He was glad the sun's light hadn't yet filled the room, for it left the pink stain on his cheeks hidden in darkness.

"Just getting an early start on the day, Pete," Remus replied quietly. He managed to shrug his arms through the sleeves of the warm, soft sweater and began to button it. "You might be able to squeeze in a few more minutes of sleep if you're not quite ready to start the morning."

"I'm never ready..." He groaned, rubbing his hands against his eyes to further force himself to wake up. Peter was a generally lazy person, choosing to relax or sleep in his free time as he did not have Quidditch like Sirius and James nor did he study as often as Remus, yet he knew that if he laid back down it would make that personality flaw all the more clear to his friends.

Peter did not want that. He had begun to care more, as to what was thought of him; concerning himself with pointless little things and worrying increasingly more.

Unlike Remus, Peter left his bed a mess, choosing instead to stand upright, and after yawning once more, he moved to his trunk, where Peter began to remove fresh clothes for the day, taking his time in selecting what to wear. For the first time in weeks, he was not in a rush to make it to class.

"Everyone else is already up anyways..." Shutting the trunk, he glanced towards Remus.

"You look pale, mate." Peter paused, realization flickering across his features, and he pointed towards the other, as he looked instead towards James and Sirius.

"It isn't around that time, is it?"

"Oi you lot, I was trying to write love prose to Lily for Valentine's Day, but now I can't concentrate with all of this racket." Grinning at his mates, he flung open his curtains and dropped the half-written bit of parchment, leaving it till later. He proceeded to drop trou and rummage through his trunk, completely starkers and unashamed. James was always on the point of nearly too comfortable around his mates, so that this would have been typical morning behaviour.

"Sodding trunk — can't find bollocks in this —" He continued to curse as he rummaged, eventually finding a wrinkled dress shirt and tossing it over his head. As he heard Pete's words, he stopped mid-dressing and turned to face Remus.

"Shit, is it? Y'know I'm bloody awful with dates... er, d'you feel okay?" James had finally noticed Remus's stiffness and colouring, and while Sirius's action hadn't gotten past his attention, he chose to be silent on his mate's obvious concern. Absent-mindedly smiling to himself, he then shook off the stray thought and reached for his glasses by the window sill. Finally the world was no longer a blur.

Of all things. Leave it to Wormtail to bring it up. He couldn't hold it against his friend, though. They would have figured it out sooner or later, when he wasn't in class for them to copy his notes for the day. There was no avoiding it now, though it made his ears burn a fiery red. No matter how much time had passed since the three of them figured out his secret, Remus would never get used to having to talk about it.

He was quiet for a moment. It didn't bother him that they didn't remember the exact date. It wasn't their furry little problem. He wouldn't have even minded if they skipped a time or two, or however many they wanted. If James wanted to spend the night attempting to be a romantic poet, that was fine with him. If Sirius had a date, or if Peter had homework to catch up on, or whatever the case might be, he wouldn't have argued or pleaded for their company no matter how much it helped him.

"It's.. er.. tonight, actually," he said, meekly. Remus fidgeted with one of the buttons on his borrowed cardigan, and stepped out of his tattered slippers while looking for clean socks and not at James' naked arse.

Sirius glared at his friends. How could they have possibly forgotten what day it was? Sirius had each full moon circled on his calendar with red ink.

"You want breakfast Moony?" he knew Remus wasn't always hungry leading up to a Full, but Sirius always worried when he didn't eat. "I can nip down and fetch up some toast or sommat."

James also went quiet for a minute as he found his rumpled trousers at the very bottom of the trunk, feeling the tension in the room ramp up significantly. He knew that his friend didn't like talking about his monthly condition, but James almost started to feel left out, as though he and his fellow Animagi weren't always welcome to help Moony out. Even if that wasn't the truth, he couldn't help his thoughts on the matter as his words were tainted with them:

"Well... do you need us to help you out tonight? I'm sure I can nip Lily's notes for your classes today because you know I won't take any good ones. Still have plenty of prose to finish up and all." When Sirius spoke up, James turned to look at him as he shimmied into his trousers and then tousled his hair, which was already sticking on end from bed.

"Sounds brills, actually. We can bring you up double portions if you want. May as well fatten up for tonight." He'd said it so nonchalantly and even cracked a grin, mostly because he tried to cut into the tension and shift the situation back into their usual banter. James hate feeling like he had to walk on eggshells around his mate. He wished they could all be more open and have more fun with it, but really, he wasn't thinking about how this must be affecting Remus. After all, if it were James who was afflicted, he might want some privacy, himself.

Remus never wanted to make them feel like they had to be there. He knew his mates ot a thrill out of the whole thing, but he never wanted it to feel like an obligation. That was why it was very difficult for him to answer James' question honestly. Did he need them to help him out? No, he supposed not. He'd survived without them there in years past, but he also knew that having them there really did help. It calmed Moony down, and kept him from ripping himself to shreds. The recovery time he had to spend in the infirmary was significantly less thanks to them. But he never wanted it to turn into a chore.

"I like having you there," he said, and that was as honest as he could be about it. He didn't like that they put themselves as risk for him, but it was a comfort not to have to go through it alone anymore, even if he didn't retain his mind during the transformations.

When the subject was brought back to Sirius' inquiry about food, he frowned a little. He wasn't hungry, but James was right about him needing to eat. Remus glanced down at himself; he was terribly thin, even for a teenage boy with a lightening-fast metabolism. He'd also need to get something in his stomach in order to tolerate all the pain potions Pomfrey would surely be giving him as she always did. He knew his friends were trying, and he loved them for that. "See if there's any bacon, will you?" He asked, and smiled warmly, albeit tiredly, at them.

Sirius grinned, suddenly all manic energy and puppyish excitement to please.

"Yeah, heaps of bacon! And sausage too I bet! If not I'll get the elves to whip some up, you know them, always eager to please." He was practically bouncing in his excitement. "And toast! Toast is good when you're not quite right."

He grabbed his shoes but didn't bother to put them on as he dashed for the door. He made it onto the staircase before vaulting back around, nearly tumbling headlong down them in his haste, and scampering back into the room. He pulled Remus into a tight, but somehow still gentle embrace, being careful of his aching shoulders, before whispering in the other boys ear,

"Of course we want to be therer you daft sod. We'd come even if it weren't fun."

And before he'd given it a second to sink in he was off again, shoes dangling by their laces and shirt still fully unbuttoned, madly racing down the stairs and towards the kitchen.

Nodding along with Sirius, he felt himself loosen up as his mate helped him along with his plan to somewhat cheer Remus up. He knew it would be difficult to get the intelligent boy to open up and smile more during such times, if not downright impossible, but anything that could make him feel better would be worth doing. He offered a cheerful smile at Remus then.

"Always happy to help, mate, really." When Sirius dashed off, James sputtered and started rummaging for his shoes, yelling after Sirius:

"Mate, WAIT UP!" But then he returned and James watched with lifted brows as he whispered something in Remus's ear. James just observed in silence and then did a double-take when Sirius took off again.

Hopping on one foot, he managed to get a shoe on but then dashed off after Sirius, the other shoe in his hand, his shirt also open and trousers unzipped. If they ran into any girls in the common room or across the castle, they'd get quite the show.

Sirius didn't even have to look back to know that James was right behind him. James was always right behind him. Except for the few times when Sirius was right behind James. He slowed just enough for his best mate to catch up, then flashed him a particularly canine grin.

"Oi you prat, at least let me get my bloody shoe on!" He stopped abruptly, almost slamming into Sirius's back when he'd slowed down. James hopped again and finally managed to slip on the shoe. Glancing at Sirius with a wicked smirk as he caught up, he raced past him and tossed out over his shoulder:

"Seconded! SLOW ARSE!"

Sirius tore off after James, not bothering to put on his shoes. He knew they were probably safe from Professors this early, and besides, they were the Marauders! They knew every secret passage, hidden stair, and door pretending to be a wall in the entire castle.

Soon they were skidding to a halt in front of a painting of a bowl of fruit. Sirius bowed low.

"After you m'lord"

James looked at his mate suspiciously, knowing that if their positions were reversed, he'd have something devious up his sleeve at a time like this. So, cautiously, James passed behind Sirius and 'accidentally' shoved him forward when he reached to tickle the pear.

"Whoops, pardon me, good lad. I didn't see your shiny arse so close in proximity to my massive pectorals." He puffed out his still half-shirted chest for good measure. When the portrait opened up into the kitchens, he'd forgotten about their little banter and hopped inside, mouth suddenly starting to water.

A little house elf squeaked and dashed right up to him, asking if he'd needed anything. Turning toward Sirius, James grinned and placed an order for the largest platter of bacon and sausages that they could carry upstairs. Remus did say he wanted bacon, after all. Never leave a major decision like this up to James.

While James was busy ordering heart clogging amounts of bacon and sausage Sirius asked another elf for a few pieces of toast; one dry, one with butter, and one with jam; a pot of Remus' favorite tea, and jug of hot chocolate. He also liberated a couple of eclairs for him and James on the run back.

The house elves were as speedy as always in bringing back their requested items, and Sirius quickly cast a charm to keep the drinks hot and sealed in their containers before shrinking them and tucking them into his pockets.

He tossed James and eclair then shoved his own into his mouth before asking

"Alright then?"

The elves returned to James with an unbearably massive dose of the fatty goodness, bowing excessively and tittering about. James just smiled and offered a wave of thanks as his mouth was stuffed with the sinfully delicious eclair. He carefully took out his wand and muttered the shrinking charm with mouth full, which turned the bacon & sausages into decently small enough pocketfuls, after which he followed after Sirius and prodded his shoulder to get going.

Finally swallowing the massive chunk of eclair, James looked down and realised that his trousers were still very much open, and since he didn't normally wear shorts, his assets were there for the world to see. Zipping up, he looked up when Sirius mentioned Remus.

"Oh yeah? Aside from the usual, you mean? He seems a little subdued lately, I'll give you that." 'Subdued' might not even be the best word. Downright depressed was more like it. James shook his head and leaned against a wall. "Y'reckon it's something to do with his monthly issue or something else entirely?" James was somewhat glad that they were one-on-one, because he had been meaning to discuss Remus for quite a while, he just hadn't the motivation nor the opportunity till now.

"Er, your fault? What'd you do, bloody tease him and call his transformation a girl's period or sommat?" At first he wanted to grin at his joke, but he'd noticed how quickly Sirius turned away.

Sobering up, James pushed off of the wall and headed over toward Sirius, holding onto his should and forcing his mate to look him in the eye. Brows knitted together and he tested the waters with unusual sensitivity:

James was occasionally too dense for his own good, as he kicked himself for having let that slip his mind. He never seemed to pay as close attention to events surrounding Remus as he maybe should have, starting to feel guilty for that, too. Looking down, he took a step back and stared at his feet, trying to figure a way to smooth things over.

"Well that's history, isn't it? I'm sure he doesn't need reminding, and bloody hell," he started to get annoyed, raising his gaze to Sirius's angry expression and also barely holding back a bit of his own anger, "I bloody well didn't need it, either! You're such a fucking moron sometimes, y'know that? You've been harping on that since then? Are you mad? No wonder Moony can't get past it, what with you always acting like a bloody twat about it."

James was surprised at his own surge of anger toward his mate, but the more he thought on it, the more he remembered just how rattled he'd been during that incident. He'd been the one to come to Snape's aid; although if he'd been just a few minutes later...

Letting out a huge breath, he launched from where he stood and started a round of pacing instead of landing his fist against a wall. What a fantastic way to start the morning, when Remus needed them the most.

When James started ranting Sirius was fully prepared the punch him one. That was always how they settled these things. But as he went on Sirius realized that he was dangerously close to... To... To fucking crying and he had to turn, to fucking run, something because he was about to lose it in the cooridor by the kitchen in front of James and that just couldn't happen.

"Shut up," he mumbled, not nesecarrily loud enough for James to hear.

The more he paced, the more breaths he took, and the longer they stood there in that damned tension, the more agitated James got. But when he forced himself to look back at his mate, he got it in his head that maybe this wasn't the best way to resolve a problem, this ridiculous stand off. This was Sirius after all, like a brother to him and the best mate he'd ever had. He was still a massive prat about Remus, but that didn't change the fact that every one of them wanted what was best for Remus.

Letting out his held breath and slowing his pacing, James once more leaning against a wall and tilted his head back to look up at the very far ceiling. "This isn't getting us anywhere, mate... we should try to just... I dunno, maybe talk with Moony and figure things out."

Brows again furrowed as he got a glimpse of his mate's face. He hadn't realised that Sirius was taking all of this so... well, seriously. Even after the incident, he seemed so nonchalant, so detached from it... had James misjudged Sirius so?

Nodding silently, James pointedly kept his gaze on Sirius as they stood in yet another wave of tension, shifting from hot to cold in the space of minutes. And yet James couldn't help that there was something still unsaid lingering between them.

And just like that, their heated conversation was over with Sirius back to his old pratty self again. At the back of his mind though, he kept a log of that conversation and would have to remember to return to it.

Laughing at the imagery that conjured up, James strutted alongside Sirius, the two of them parading their sexy bods the whole way, having yet to actually run into anyone that might take a glance. Sure he had a huge fancy for Lily, but that didn't mean he couldn't appreciate some well-placed attention.

Alas! He'd spoken too soon. Just as they were about half-way back to Gryffindor Tower, a gaggle of what looked to be middle year Hufflepuffs passed by them, two of the girls giggling and tossing stares back at himself and Sirius. Winking at them, James adjusted his shirt to expose more lean chest before nudging Sirius in the side.

Seeming to think most seriously on the question, he started rubbing his chin with a hand and snapped his fingers.

"Bloody right you are, mate. Silly of me to forget that bit of information!" As they resumed their outlandish conversation, they were already happening upon the familiar portrait, to whom James chipperly gave the password. The Fat Lady just shook her head at his enthusiasm and opened up to allow them entrance.

As soon as he'd stepped foot back into the common room, a slight tug on his mood caught him by the back of the throat. They'd have to go back up and drop off the food. They'd have to face Remus and pretend like nothing happened on that trip. James steeled himself for the otherwise casual return to the common room, looking back toward Sirius and hoping he wouldn't be showing any signs of unease, himself.

Not likelyAfter how he reacted, there's no telling.

Sirius wasn't thinking about it. He wasn't talking about it, he wasn't acknowleding it, in fact, nothing happened in the cooridor. Nothing at all.

"What're you waiting for? We've got food you daft sod!"

He dashed up the stairs two at a time, eager to bring Remus their bounty.

Peter concentrated on getting dressed, listening instead to the back and forth of words that floated throughout the room and around him; he was tired, having stayed up later then he usually would have to finish up the homework for that day.

It was a slow realization, that he was actually right. That Remus would be turning once again that night. Peter always tried to remember -- it was a shock, when it snuck up on them like this --- however, somehow it only seemed like Sirius could keep the date stuck in his mind.

Once he had pulled his trousers on, buttoned his shirt and gotten his shoes on the right feet, Peter had turned to face his group of friends. He was quiet, like Remus, only because he felt tense, almost awkward, at times like these. He was not charismatic like the others, nor thoughtful like Lupin, and Peter was only noticing that more and more as of late.

As Sirius and James raced from the Dormitory, and the door banged shut behind them, Peter flashed a small, smile towards Remus.

It was always painfully clear that he was uncomfortable with his problem. Even after all of the times that they had snuck out of the Shrieking Shack together.

"Don't worry about it, Moony." He said, just as he dropped the lid of the trunk shut.

It really didn't take much to get Sirius excited and full of energy, and where Sirius ran, James was right there with him. It made Remus happy to see the two of them laughing as they ran out of the room. When all the drama of the year before went down with Snape, Remus had worried that the two of them would never mend their friendship. James had been so angry, and Sirius had seemed so indifferent about it. It had crushed Remus; the whole thing had broken his heart. It was still mending, but it meant more to him to see that Sirius and James were brothers again, than for his own heart to piece itself back together. He could be happy, knowing that they were close again.

The sound of Peter's trunk closing brought him out of his thoughts, and he smiled over at his remaining friend and nodded. "Thanks, Pete," he said and walked with a bit of a limp back to his bed. He sat back down on the mattress and began to pull on his socks; one red, one purple with gold stripes. They never matched, but that was just a Remus-thing.

"Need me to read over any of your essays or make edits for you?" He asked. "I'll be confined to bed all day tomorrow. Might as well be useful, yeah?" Remus felt a special kinship with Peter, whether the other boy felt the same or not. The two of them were the back up band to Sirius and James' front men status.

Peter sat atop his trunk, keeping his eyes on his too-skinny friend, who was looking all the more pale as sunlight began to filter through the high windows, the sun slowly rising to bring in the morning.

It was not particularly unusual for he and Remus to be left behind, as James and Sirius got caught up in their own special friendship, yet Peter felt that this time was different.

Usually they stuck together when a Full Moon had dawned, more as a pack then a simple group of friends, keeping an eye on their friend and making sure to distract him from his Furry little problem.

Peter gave a slight shrug, smiling a little more. No matter how close they all were, he felt more comfortable when alone with Remus. The other two were just...so cool. Confident and sure of themselves and more often then not, Peter envied that and remained silent, rather then try to emulate such behavior.

"I always have things to be looked over or corrected, mate." He said, raising one hand to comb his fingers through his hair, smoothing out the bed-head look.

"But you should take it easy. 'Sides food, you need a lot of rest too, right?"

Barging back through the dorm's door with pockets brimming with all sorts of goodies, James grinned at the quieter [and arguably more sensible] half of the Marauders. Rummaging about for the platter they'd gotten from the house elves, James enlarged it and brought it over to Remus like a restaurant server, waving the still sizzling bacon and sausages under his nose.

"Mmmm, doesn't that smell just amazing, Moons? You said you wanted bacon; well dig in!" He placed the plate down on Remus's side of the room, tossing over a few pillows from everyone's four posters so that they could all sit down. After his quick preparations, James turned toward Peter to drag him by the arm in the direction of the feast.

"Padfoot's dawdling outside with some less meaty things, if you reckon you don't want a heart attack." James plopped down upon one of the pillows and grabbed several bits of sausage and bacon, yelping at the heat before stuffing his mouth and feeling his eyes water.

Peter allowed himself to be pulled across the space and to Moony's four poster and promptly dropped upside his dark-haired and chattering friend. Carefully taking a slice of the still hot bacon, he bite into it, unable to help the grin that split along his features.

"Did you get any pastries?" It was just meaningless banter about food, however Peter knew that it was likely a worthwhile attempt to draw the focus from Remus' worn, and progressively worsening, state.

"Sure Moony'd like something that doesn't burn his tongue off."

Sirius walked in a moment later, pulling out tea, toast, and hot chocolate and arranging them on his truck.

"Chocolate?" He asked the room at large, but his eyes were on Remus. "Or tea?"
