Who: Dominic & Adelaide
What: Comfort & Talking
When: Tuesday Evening
Where: Astronomy Tower
Rating: PG for the moment
Status: Incomplete

It seemed only fitting that she would meet Dominic up on the Astronomy Tower. She had made sure to get there early and shoot glares at giggling couples who tried to sneak up to catch a few snogs in between dinner. She remembered the night he had caught her here and what would begin their unlikely relationship. She stood as she had before, looking out across the school grounds towards the Forbidden Forest. She and Amycus had talked and it was both agreed that they did not want this engagement. Now was the time to figure out how to convince their parents that this match would not be suiting for the other.

And then she began to think of the offer Dominic had provided. She had certainly believed it to be a joke, although she was beginning to find she would have much preferred that match to the one she was currently in. Dominic was something else once he let her in through all the teasings. True, they were a new couple, perhaps still in that "honeymoon" stage she heard all the other girls complain about once it was over. But Dominic had a good point. He was of the same stock, a very good blood line. Plus she loved him.

She shook her head, staring down towards the ground below. Love? Things like that didn't automatically come from one kiss stolen in a garden. Those were from fairy tales and books she liked to read through, not real life. Real life was like what was happening now; bittersweet and lonely. She had finally found someone she could find herself getting serious about only to have it ripped from her. She had started an owl to her father multiple times, but each had been crumpled and thrown in the garbage. How could she start and tell him that she had found someone else that could be more suitable? It would dishonour her in her father's eyes to not be happy with the match they had set up for her. She knew it was her father's doing that it was Amycus Carrow they chose, not someone older.

The door behind her opened and she turned to tell off the other students, but saw that it was Dominic. She smiled and ran towards him, throwing her arms around his neck. A strange gesture for Adelaide, but with the coming news, she just wanted to be right there.

Dominic had just barely entered the Tower when Adelaide came crashing into him. Staggering back slightly -- he had been taken by surprise -- he automatically wrapped his arms around her waist, keeping her secure, rather then just let her fall if he slipped.

Straightening himself, Dominic inhaled deeply, an attempt to both steady his feet on the floor properly, and his rapidly beating heart.

It felt strange, a crushing sensation as his emotions built up all the more, pressing down on him, forcing him to fully acknowledge just how much, and how deeply, he cared for the young Witch.

Stepping into the room further, he held her carefully as he kicked the door shut. Perhaps it was odd of her, to be so touchy, and perhaps it was of him, to just accept it, no teasing, no flirting...

This was different though, and there was no room for that.

Briefly, he leaned down, and kissed her. A light, fleeting moment of contact, that did little to warm Dominic. It was not strictly his place, not exactly, however he was still upset over her latest news.

Carefully, he lowered her and let go, and turned to the door. Dominic pointed his wand to it, muttering a small spell and the lock clicked into place.

Stowing the bit of wood in his pocket, he looked back down at her.

"Hey, Adelaide."

It just felt so right that she began to wonder how she held such an animosity towards him for the good part of their time together at Hogwarts. While their embrace did little to relieve the situation at hand, she felt herself lighten in his arms and she let out her own sigh of relief. When had that moment happened when it became more than a passing fancy? When she had come to truly care about him and look forward to just being in his presence?

She returned the kiss, the feeling of butterflies in her stomach happening as usual. The gesture was so small, yet enough to make her feel ridiculously happy and content. She gave him a small smile as he turned back to her, happy to have a moment alone with him and not have to worry about others showing up to bother them.

"Hi," she said, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "I'm sorry for that. Just...with the events that have been happening, I'm really happy to see you. The worst part of not being in the same house." Another reason she wanted to curse that stupid sorting hat for putting her in the wrong house.

"Thanks for coming," she said, looking up at him, her hands reaching out for his. "I needed to get away. I don't want to face reality right now."

No matter how often he had mocked Adelaide for her looks, or her short stature, Dominic found himself realizing all over again just how pretty she actually was, as he looked down at her, her personality and her readiness to accept the right that came with their blood all made up an amazing young Witch. Anyone that was allowed to marry her was more then lucky....

He forced a grin, and gave a slight shake of his head. "It's fine, Adelaide. Not like you hurt me or anything." Dominic said, reaching out briefly and giving her a slight pat on the cheek, a gesture that usually would have seemed conceding coming from him.

Now though, his gaze was filled with worry, and an odd sort of relief, at being there. Seeing her.

It made him happy enough, to know she cared, that she did not want to be with Amycus, but there was also a sort of hollowness in his gut, and he began to wonder how Adelaide just...appeared so normal. "You can always visit."

He reached out, without questioning her, and took hold of her hand, gripping it a bit too tightly. Leading her to the railing that allowed them to over look the grounds, Dominic lent sideways against it.

He kept hold of her though, eyes trained on her own.

"I'm glad you were willing to see me, is all really. I mean..." What was there to say? They both knew the impact of a betrothal, of what this meant for them and others...

Dominic kept the smile in place.

"I'm just happy to be with you."

When she was with Dominic, she almost felt like a normal person. It was something she had always dreaded, becoming one of those silly couples that walked around looking longingly up into each others eyes, making silly noises at each other. It disgusted her, but deep down, she wanted that too. Perhaps not the nonsense that many of the other students did, but the closeness of being with that one person that made you feel special. And Dom was that person for her. It had happened so quickly, but felt so natural at the same time. She had always hoped for true love and she was beginning to believe that she had found it.

She grinned, liking the light tease in his voice. It helped to distract from the serious matter on hand. It was the elephant in the room, but she didn't want to feel like this all the time. While Dominic's proposal had always been at the back of her head, majority of her had already come to terms with the idea of having to marry Amycus.

"Of course I want to see you," she said, walking over with him to the ledge but turning to look at him. "I always want to see you." She smiled, wondering if her engagement was affecting him more than she thought. He was so quiet and calm.

"Are you okay?" She leaned her back against the ledge, her hand still in his. Her thumb ran over his knuckles, wanting to reach out and stroke his hair.

Despite that bold in-your-face and generally indifferent and cruel attitude that Dominic had portrayed since some of his earliest years, it had come as something of a relief, when he awoke the night after the Malfoy Ball and realized that what had happened with Adelaide in the garden had not been a dream.

No, it had been reality, and a small part of him had rejoiced. Dominic always wanted something like this, someone he could be close to and honest. He had Severus, however there had always been things he could not fully show his mate, as the other did not put up with it. His parents and extended family had always brushed that aside, and he had decided to give them up long ago.

Adelaide was a different story.

With the impending betrothal, he realized just how uncertain their futures were, just how much they depended upon their parents and those around them. That they might not be together for more than a month.

It was more then simply disappointing.

"You know, I feel the same way. It's a bit strange, for me...usually I could care less." Adeliade was oddly special though, not just some girl to hang off his arm. She had a mind of her own, shared in his beliefs. It was refreshing.

However, that was not what they were here to talk about...it was that thing, with Amycus. Dominic could not bring himself to force it out just yet, to ruin the slight calm they had wrapped themselves in.

Despite that, he found himself giving a shrug, still smiling at her. "I dunno. It's just unbelievable... I doubt you're growing fine, the longer this goes on either." There was something there in his voice. Almost a question, while the slight teasing dropped.

"I understand why they're doing this but...I just can't really believe it's happening, you know?"

Adelaide couldn't help but laugh at what he said, only pulling him closer to her, her arms going around his neck. "To think the last time we were here I was feeling less than thrilled to have you here." Adelaide had spent a whole day thinking of her relationship transition with Dominic. There had been a time when she truly despised seeing him around school. She had never gotten to know him, but he had always given off an air of arrogance and cockiness. Ok, so maybe that part was still true. But she was able to see a different side, one that was softer and actually meant well. It was strange to think that she may have missed out on that opportunity all together.

She nodded her head, her eyes lowering as the talk of the engagement arose. "We had both spoken of how it was almost that time," she said, her eyes looking down at their shoes. "I suppose I was just hoping it would be..." You. She looked up at him again, not being able to actually finish the sentence. As much as she knew it was true, it still felt too soon to utter the words out loud. There was much Dominic did not know about her and she was afraid to let that side of her out to him.

"Hopefully we'll figure something out," she said, her eyes darting around the tower. "I don't want to be one of your one week girlfriends." She smiled, teasing him just slightly. It was a serious topic, but she didn't want to become too depressed, especially since Dominic was here. "It seems I at least have a year to try and figure something out," she said. "Although the sooner the better."

It was strange, to have such misgivings and yet to feel contentment bubbling up. Dominic was not exactly sad or happy, he was somewhere in between, a place he rarely had stepped foot in and one which he did not know just how to handle.

Adelaide kept him anchored, however. As her arms wrapped around his neck and she kept him close. He could count her lashes, if he wanted, by their closeness.

"I'm glad your opinion of me has changed." Glad that they could be like this, that their animosity had drained away and become replaced with something better.

His hands placed on her hips before slipping around her waist, watching, rather then looking away as she had done. He remained relatively silent, instead listening. A first, for him.

As her words trailed off, he gave the slightest shake of his head. "Yeah...I understand." Dominic got it, even if he did not want to.

When she began to tease him, some of that uneasiness that had settled in gradually washed away, and he found himself chuckling quietly, as he drew her in and gave her a quick, squeezing hug. "You're more lasting then any of them. You make an imprint, you know that?"

At the mention, once again, of the engagement, he shifted. Glanced away and then back again, smiling a little. A year? Dominic had thought it would be something quick, taking what little time they had away.

"I think we could make that work."

Adelaide smiled still in wonder how comfortable he made her feel and at ease. Even with the conversation of her impending engagement, she felt more relaxed with him. She sighed and slid down against the wall, tugging his hand so he could sit next to her. She leaned against him, her head on his shoulder.

"Did you really mean it?" she asked after a moment of silence. "About taking Amycus' spot. Would you really marry me?" She had been turning the idea around in her head, wondering if he was just saying it as a means to make her feel better. Even if he had truly meant it as a genuine gesture, she still couldn't get past the fact that they had only been dating for a week or so. She knew how she felt about him, even though she had tried to deny it. It felt too unrealistic, too storybook. Every girl wished for it, even herself, yet once it actually came, she couldn't quite accept it.

And there were things he didn't know about her. Her love of torture, how she could easily take a life without regret. While he seemed to accept her little outbursts here and there over the journals, it was another thing to actually experience it.

Dominic had moved with her, slipping down, his fingers lacing through with hers', while his other arm had remained at his side once Adelaide leaned in against him. It should have been comforting, even sweet, for the young couple to be sitting there...

There was the guilt, and slight worrying still inside of him, although he tried to relax, keep the brief happiness that had flared up there. To fan it into a stronger flame.

Instead, he felt it wilting at her questioning, though his voice remained firm. "I wasn't joking, Adel. I honestly think it would be a pleasure to marry you... I mean, if I am to be wed, it might as well be with someone I care about, and enjoy being with. " He paused, giving her a slight, almost playful jostle.

"You deserve all that and more, too. If they would allow me, I would be engaged to you like --- " Here, he snapped his fingers, briefly breaking their hold. " That."

She smiled at his words and the playful nature he tried to keep with her. She knew he was trying everything he had to make her feel better, but the situation seemed to be hopeless. Even with the words and promises he was giving her, she still had her doubts. Even if they did marry, she didn't want him to regret his decision because of rash feelings he may have for her. It would be almost as bad as marrying Amycus.

She looked up at him, the smallest smile on her face. "I care about you too Dominic. I wouldn't want you to do anything that you might come to regret." She leaned over and gave him a small kiss.

"Do you think we ran into everything too fast? I'm almost scared of how strongly I feel about you after such a short time. And I start to question it. Is it because you're my first? Or do I truly care about you?" It was the most honest she had been with him, but the engagement made her realize she didn't have much time to play games or step around the situation. It was better to lay it all out and figure things out.

Dominic had returned the light kiss, his hand raising the gently brush along her long, dark, hair. He would have said something, anything, to counter her previous words, however the flood that came pouring out next gave him pause.

Those small silly and playful gestures he had been showing were evaporating quickly; this was serious, not some old joke, or prank. This was serious, in a way Dominic had never taken a bird, or anything else he had done.

There had never been room for such concerns, and somehow Adelaide Slwyn changed that all. She had wormed inside of his heart and mind, allowing him to become accustomed to her, to care about her.

And now she might be leaving him.

Dominic took the news as someone might have the death of a family member, grimly and with staunch resolution. "I don't know, Adelaide," He answered, saying the first things that popped into his mind, rather then think it all through, provide her with some thought out answer.

Instead, he said what he felt. "I honestly don't know if we're going fast...I can't answer those things for you, but I know you're not my first, and that I care about you like---"

Dominic frowned, looking away finally, his hand moving to mess his dark hair. He seemed tense, and uncomfortable.

"Like I haven't anyone else. I'd be willing to take Amycus' place, and I know I wouldn't regret it."

She felt him tense over the seriousness of the conversation and watched as he turned away, probably trying to figure out everything for himself as well. Was he in the same situation, perhaps caught up in the new relationship and the wonderfulness of it all? Why couldn't they at least had a few more weeks of this before needing to get all serious?

But he was being patient with her, a value and aspect she truthfully hadn't expected of him but made her care for him all the more. Just as she had different sides to her, it was obvious the same applied to Dominic. She looked at him, studying his profile as he stared off in the opposite direction. She wasn't alone in all of this confusion and complication, yet that didn't make it any easier. She didn't want Dominic to be caught up in this, but it seemed he was now invested. If they couldn't find a way to break the engagement where would that leave them? He had said he would want to be with her regardless, but she couldn't do that to him. Yet the thought of breaking up seemed to twist at her heart and she couldn't just let go of him so easily.

She leaned her head against his shoulder again, staring straight ahead at the door. They had to come up with something. Perhaps his idea of taking Amycus' place wasn't so bad.

"Maybe you can come home with me sometime and meet my family," she said, her eyes still trained on the door. Her heart was beating as she said the words, as if afraid he would now refuse once she had accepted it. "It would give you an opportunity to have a better idea of me and they could get to know you. If father sees how much you mean to me, he might reconsider the engagement to Amycus." She looked up at him, searching his eyes to make sure this was really alright. She was beginning to become open to the idea of having Dominic as her husband and it was enough to make her feel giddy with excitement.

Dominic did not look back down, when she leaned against him, however he still roped his arm around her, holding Adelaide in close. Briefly, he let his eyes drift shut, blocking the cool, damp stone from view and the heavy door across from them.

A breeze came and went in the high Tower, cool even despite the cloak wrapped around his shoulders. Or perhaps it was the prospect of losing Adelaide, of having nothing left of the time that had been together.

Having Amycus take her away, when he was not good enough, never would be...

At her words, he drew his eyes open, turned them back onto her and stared down. He rubbed his hand against her arm, nodding slightly. "That would be nice, Adelaide. I would like that." Who knew? She could be right, her father could come to understand their feelings and...

Break off the engagement. Offend the Carrow family.

The longer he thought about it, the less likely it seemed they would get out of this together however Dominic tried to shove that from mind. He did not want to acknowledge such a prospect yet.

"Maybe you could visit me too? 'Rent's might offer an engagement to your family, if they don't know you're already taken." It was wishful thinking, but that was all they could do right now.

Adelaide had never realized how safe she could feel being in his arms. He didn't need to make eye contact with her or even notice her at all; his actions said everything. She felt his arm tighten around her and she let out a small sigh, wishing it were possible to just stay like this for the rest of the day. It felt right to be like this with him. The breeze made her shiver, but with Dominic's arm wrapped around her and them sitting so close together, it really didn't matter. At the moment, she would gladly have given up everything just to be with Dominic.

And that was what worried her the most.

She nodded her head at his offer, his words really not setting in. Instead, she was thinking of what Dolores had suggested. Take a small break. When Adelaide had read the words, she knew she couldn't do it. Already the thought of being apart from Dominic was upsetting enough, why would she be away from him so early? They had at least another year together that they could enjoy, even if the arranged marriage did go through.

But what would be the point? It would just be harder to break up if they stayed together longer. Wouldn't a quick fast break up be the best? She pursed her lips together, turning to look at Dominic. Her eyes searched his, wondering how he would take the news. Upset probably. The one thing that had kept her going was the fact that Dominic had not hidden his feelings from her. It was obvious they shared the same infinity for each other; perhaps that was why she felt so comfortable with him.

Even so...

"Do you think it would be better to...to take a break?" she asked, still looking up at him. "It was just suggested by a friend I was talking to about the situation. I was telling her how confused I was and scared and she thought taking a step back from the whole thing might put things into a better light." She bite her lip, finally looking back down at her lap. "I don't really want to, but maybe it would be for the best. In case things don't work out and I end up having to marry Amycus."

There were other things to discuss; some direction needed to be figured out before they went back to their separate Houses but it was comfortable. To sit next to her, silence linger and allowing his mind to spin up that false sense of security in their togetherness that he needed all too much right now.

It had only just begun to work, when her words fully set in and he felt it starting to crack all around him, as that small hope dropped to the pit of his stomach like a heavy Bezoar.

Whatever friend had suggested this, Dominic wanted to throttle. A break? Why the hell would they take a break? The unusual hopelessness inside of him was gradually being replaced by annoyance, flickering stronger as the seconds slipped away.

Dominic pulled his arm away, shifting in place so that he was fully facing her. It was clear in the expression that he wore that Dominic was working to find the right words, as he chewed on his cheeks skin and his fingers worked the fabric of his robes between his fingers. "That's..."

Dominic looked down at Adelaide, searching her features.

Even if someone else had brought the idea to her mind, they were not the ones making her take this step. It was something else. Something he had overlooked...?

"Tell me," Dominic said, "Is that what you want?"

Adelaide felt her heart drop when he moved his arm away and she was beginning to think she had just made the biggest mistake she could have done. She watched him, keeping her back against the wall, her eyes searching his. She thought she had completely pissed him off and he was trying to find the best words to tell her off. When he looked back at her, she had to avert her eyes; it was unnerving and she had never felt like that before.

She looked back up at him as he spoke, still feeling a bit nervous. She shook her head. "No," she said truthful. "But perhaps it's the best choice?" How could she make him understand that it was the last thing she wanted, but sometimes the best things for themselves were the things they wanted least to do? Still, part of her wanted him to refuse straight out and she bit her lip, wondering how he would take it. Maybe it would be best to upset him. Have him leave out of his own accord.... Still, she couldn't bring herself to outright tell him that she didn't want him. She wanted to be selfish and cling to him for as long as she could have with him.

Dominic had joked before, with some of his fellow Slytherin's that it was difficult to anger him, that they would have to work to get even the slightest of a rise out of him.

Dominic was wondering if he had inadvertently lied at the time because now, at the simplest of words, he felt anger boiling up.

He chewed his lower lip, considering her, Adelaide's words and the way she had looked away from him...

Dominic knew this was not only frustrating for him. He was trying to make up a reason for this, some excuse to stick to Adelaide to keep himself from shouting and raging at her.

From throwing the offer right back into her face.

It was obvious work, for him to keep his tone level. "Best choice for who? For what, Adelaide? If it's for you--"

It felt strange, like a twisting and jerking sensation had arisen above all other feelings that ran throughout his body.

"Then I could accept that."

Because Dominic cared about her. Really, and truly cared for her.

Adelaide's collected features broke as he struggled to get his point across. Her face softened and she reached across to take his hand, hoping he wouldn't pull away from it. "For both of us," she said softly, struggling to not get overly emotional with the situation. "We both talked about how fast and committed this relationship was going, how it was a first for both of us in a way. Maybe that was trying to tell us something?" She posed it as a question rather than a statement.

She tried to catch his eye, but it was obvious that the offer had upset him. She wished she could have taken it back, but she remained silent on the matter.

"What else would you propose?" she asked. "You would want to stay in the relationship for as long as we could before I would have to leave?" She shook her head, finding that upset her more than she would have cared to admit.

Hell, Dominic had broken up with numerous girls before now and it had never bothered him.

While a good deal of him was glad that Adelaide was being quite so understanding another was bothered by it, fervently wishing that she would just be rude about it; push him away and break the ties quickly and cleanly.

What else would you propose?

Adelaide had been speaking to him so openly, sharing with him... And all he could do was sit here, stony faced and silent.

"Maybe," He forced himself to speak, choosing to look down at her hand, laying over top of his own. "Maybe it was. But I mean...if we took a break, what would that mean? Are we still together, just keeping out distance?"

Dominic gave a slight shake of his head.

"I care about you, Adelaide and I don't want this...but if doing it helps you clear your head a bit, with the marriage and all..."

He turned his hand around underneath hers', giving it a slight squeeze.

"And if it helps to show you I'm serious... I'd be willing to give it a try."

Adelaide thought about it, not sure of the answer. She had never needed to take a break from anything before and hadn't really clarified with Dolores. Did a break constitute that they were still together but just separated for a time? They were almost like that already being in different houses. But if that meant just breaking up, she definitely didn't want to do that. Now that she really thought about, after watching Dominic seem so unsure about it himself, she realized how stupid it was. Now was the time they needed to be strong together. Since when had she cared what others deemed appropriate or right? She had always followed her own ideals and values, why would this be any different?

"I care about you too Dominic. A lot. It just scared me how much I did after so short a time and I guess I began to overthink things. I don't want to take a break. I want to be with you and only you." She smiled, hoping he would easily forgive her for the gaffe she had made.

"We'll figure out a way to be together." She leaned over to give him a light kiss. "I know we will."

Adelaide could simply be saying this to appease him, however Dominic did not wish to think about it too much; rather he wished to take it all at face value and nothing else.

Dominic gave her a slight smile, finally turning his eyes back to her. He still felt a bit empty inside, his stomach tight and uncomfortable, but Dominic was trying not to be.

Trying to be the ideal boyfriend simply because he cared about Adelaide. It was hardier then it had seemed when he first began to think about it, something he had never tried before and had just thrown into action a few days previously.

Hard, but perhaps worth it. "That so?"

At the light, and brief, contact Dominic leaned in close, giving her a longer, and yet a just a light kiss, hand cupping her cheek.
