Who: Lily & Severus
What: Lily was disturbed by Severus mysteriously leaving their journal conversation and wants to find him so she can hit him...not because she's actually concerned
When: Backdated to 02/10
Where: An abandoned classroom in the dungeons
Status: Complete
Rating: R for self infliction

It had been a heated argument and Lily had been more than surprised to see his last two journal comments. When had he turned to hate her so vilely? He was the one who had turned on her! Still, he knew her temper, he knew what she could be like when upset or angry. She was defensive and she had said something that was hurtful but true...ok, not true, but something she had hoped would hurt him as much as he had hurt her. It wasn't fair and now she was running through the halls of Hogwarts, her mind on only him.

She knew he would be in the dungeons, he wouldn't have written anywhere else. She scowled as she continued to run, upset at herself for being weak and for knowing him so well. It could have just been a papercut, she scolded herself, but it didn't slow her down at all. By the time she had reached the dungeons she was out of breath, but she only took a quick second before looking in all the classrooms, hoping to see a familiar set of greasy hair.

She came upon him in the third classroom she looked in, one a little bit off from the Potions classroom. She couldn't really be surprised, but opened the door. As soon as she did, she placed a hand over her mouth. He was huddled in the corner, but from where she stood, she could see the blood.

"Oh Merlin, Severus, Severus!" She hurried over to him, their earlier arguments forgotten. She gingerly picked up his head and placed her ear by his mouth, trying to steady her own breath to hear his. She felt her heart beat again when she felt the light air blow back on her skin. "Severus, what have you done?" She looked down and saw the cuts he had made on his arm, tears springing into her eyes. She had been upset, she had been hurt, but she had never wanted this. She gingerly laid his head in her lap before she began to tear her robe in shreds. She needed to stop the bleeding, but she didn't dare leave him to get a potion. She would do things the muggle way. She almost laughed when she thought about it. Muggle knowledge was going to save Severus...hopefully.

"Severus, can you hear me?" she asked, her voice a little louder than a whisper. "Severus, wake up."

He could feel the heat engulfing him in simultaneous rage and overwhelming sadness, eyes trailing the last few lines of their correspondence. He'd gritted his teeth, bearing it as best he could, but he felt his heart hammering within his chest; he could feel the pulse throbbing in his arm, along his wrist, pounding in his head...

In a whirl of all sorts of emotions, Severus threw the journal to the cold floor and trembling hands tore into his robe, searching for the familiar metal that had brought him so much comfort over the last few months. The tears blinded his vision as he lined the muggle razor against his left inner arm, slicing a few times and watching the blood seep out in a thin line, getting thicker with each cut. When he reached his forearm, he cried out in hopelessness and dug deeper, feeling the pain and a wave of nausea overcome him. The first few drops fell into his open journal before he fell over from his sitting position, the journal skidding from him and landing in a nearby corner. He groaned at the pain and watched, fascinatedly, as the tiny streams of blood grew in size, mingling with one another and gushing down his arm and onto the floor. His robes were starting to get wet with it and the heat of the streams surprised him when it started soaking into his clothing.

Bleary-eyed, he dropped his head, shutting his eyes and feeling his pulse slowing down a bit, each minute reducing the thudding and subsequently making him feel better... but so much worse. The haze was overcoming him to a point where all he saw was misty energies rising from the jarred plant and animal remains dotted around the classroom, as though they were still alive and mocking him as his own life threatened to leave him. He hadn't done enough damage to pass out just yet, but he felt himself getting sleepier; so tempted to answer the call.

Barely hearing the commotion in the hallway; doors being slammed and feet hitting the floor. When it got closer and the voice called out, his senses were so numb that all he could do was blink slowly, not moving his head from the awkward angle. He hardly felt the hands reaching for him and feeling for breath as the faint tears coated his vision till she was just another mist figure like the rest. Partly opened eyes of sable looked far off, glassy, and if she were to let him linger in that state any longer, he might finally be claimed by the great black figure that had been squeezing onto his heart since last year. Somehow, with what little control over his muscles that he had, he managed a wistful smile at the thought of peace.

Lily mistook his smile as a sign that he knew she was there, that she had come to help him. "I'm here Severus," she said, brushing back the tears and stroking his hair. "Please, stay with me. Don't close your eyes. Stay awake." She wanted to be sure he wouldn't fall asleep or close his eyes. She felt scared and desperate; she knew he needed medical attention and fast, but she didn't want to leave him, even to get the nurse. Plus, if she did that, they would only hold him longer thinking himself a threat to himself. Being out of touch with him for so long, she didn't know how long this was going on, but wanted to find out first hand.

"Severus, I'm going to try and stop the bleeding," she said, her hand continuing to stroke his hair. "I don't have any potions, so I'm going to try and clear this up with a spell." She didn't know if it would hurt him, but thought it better to prepare him as best she could. Without taking her eyes off his face, she reached into her back pocket and pulled out her wand to point at the wounds. She whispered the incantation, praying it would be enough. She watched as some of the smaller wounds closed, but the biggest one, the one that posed the threat, was still open. She cursed and took the strips she had taken from her robe and started to bind his arm.

"I'm so sorry Severus," she said. "I didn't mean what I said. I was upset and angry and hurt. But I didn't want you to do this. Please, please Severus. Talk to me." Tell me it'll be ok.

He felt it even before he heard it, his sense of hearing as distorted as most of the rest while he lay there. The healing spell tingled on his upper arm, permeating the wounds and closing them up with a fluttering sort of softness. If Severus wasn't so groggy, he might actually enjoy the sensation. It wasn't what he expected; until the larger wound was tackled, sending such a searing pain through his arm and racking his body that he managed to tremble. Squeezing his eyes tightly against the sensation, his throat forced out a pained gasp and a wrenching groan to follow. He tried to curl in on himself, but the most he was able to manage was rolling his head and drawing his right hand up, latching onto Lily's robe against his head and balling into it.

His hearing was starting to come back to a point where he thought he heard talking. His pain addled, yet contrarily numbed brain still wasn't sure who it was that had come to his rescue. All he knew at the moment was the warmth sapping from his body and causing more violent trembles that brought even more pain until he was constantly sucking in his breath to fight it off.

Instead of getting better, he seemed to retreat within himself and shake. It scared Lily more to see him like this and she knew the severity of the situation. But what should she do? She couldn't leave him or more she didn't want to. Something didn't sit right with that notion and she found she would use that as a last resort. This would be the last time she left his side.

She glanced at his journal laying in the corner and thought about asking for help. She looked down at him, brushing hair from his eyes and feeling sweat on his brow. Was that a good sign? She frowned, shaking her head. Journal wasn't a good idea. His friends wouldn't come and help him if she was there and there was no way she was going to leave him with them.

The last option was to just bundle him up in her arms and keep the wound covered, hoping to stop the bleeding. That was the most important part. From his shivering, she could only imagine he was cold; rightly so as he was losing so much blood. She took the rest of her robe and laid it over him, pulling him closer to him. "I won't leave you," she reassured him. "I'm here." She racked her brain for other things she could do to help. What was it that her mother had said about first aid? Blood to the brain...

It was the only time she moved to grab some books and place them under his legs and arms. Blood back into the brain she he would become more coherent. She needed to know what he wanted, what he needed. She wanted him better so she could move him and get him the proper attention.

"I'm so sorry," she said again, settling herself back down, his head in her lap. "I know you probably don't understand, but I'm sorry. I don't want you to hurt like this. Please don't."

The trembling of his body slowly started to lessen with each little thing that she did, helping to return him to a semi-coherent state and allowing bleary sable eyes to open, watching himself get moved about like a ragdoll. Finally, finally, he could start to make out who it was, who was currently speaking so softly and holding onto his head so tenderly. The smell came first: her familiar scent mingled with the metallic odour of blood all around them. But that scent which he'd never forgotten, it topped it all, at the forefront of everything else.

"Liiil..." he managed, throat working and Adam's apple bobbing, but nothing else coming out for a minute. His brows lowered as he tried to get more out, tried to convey what was happening to him and what he needed, as he heard her apologies and felt the heat starting to return to his body.

"Prof... pr... Slu...hrn..." he got out between the subsiding trembling, and then let himself just rest upon her lap, turning his head back into her for comfort.

Her heart jumped as he tried to say her name. It could only mean good things, both that he recognized her and could talk...a little. "Yes, Severus, I'm here! I'm here Severus." She reached for his other hand, taking it in hers and squeezing it. Everything was slurred and jumbled but she knew what he wanted. She just nodded her head, continuing to stroke his hair with her free hand.

"Of course," she said. "Just...just rest a little bit longer and I'll take you to him. Don't go to sleep though! Just...stay with me a little longer. It's been too long." She tried to give him a smile, unsure if he would actually register it or not.

Just with his few words, she felt a world better. Things were going to be ok. It seemed that something was working and she dared not move him in case it made him turn for the worse. No, for now she would hold him like this until he stopped shaking. After that she could figure out a way to get him to Slughorn's chambers.

She knew it wasn't the place to ask, but she shook her head. "What were you thinking you silly boy," she said, a tone of jest in it. "You didn't think I had truly hated you this much? That I would want you to do something like this?" She sighed, all the hate rushing out of her. "I would never want you to do this, no matter the fight we've had."

Taking comfort in her steady voice and the words that he could pick up and understand, Severus managed to squeeze her hand right back, albeit more weakly than she had. He felt coherent thought swirling in his brain and he imagined that he might even be able to move his limbs if he tried; certainly not the cut up arm, but everything else... yes, as he tested his toes, they moved slightly in his shoes and he became encouraged a little too quickly, trying to lift his head and feeling another wave of strong nausea hit him.

"Blim'y..." he slurred out, resting his head back down on Lily's lap while trying to steady his breathing. He watched her every move through hazy vision, and now, even that was starting to clear up with the tears that she'd earlier wiped away. Blinking a few times, he felt confident enough to try speaking again, to urge further action now that he knew what was happening to him:

"'need Slughrn, he 'as potions..." he murmured, staring up at her with as pleading an expression as he could manage. He felt exhausted, like he'd just run a few marathons in a row, but he wouldn't let himself fall asleep... not just yet.

She looked down as he began to speak, more clearly than he had earlier. It lifted her spirits and she nodded her head. "Slughorn, of course," she said. "But do you think you're strong enough to walk? I don't want to leave you to get him." She was sure she could support his weight, he looked like he weighed less than a leaf. Still, she didn't want them to draw attention to anyone, especially since they were in Slytherin territory.

She leaned down a gave him a chaste kiss on the forehead, before gingerly moving herself from underneath him. Her feet had fallen asleep from sitting on them, but she paid them no mind. She lifted his arm over her shoulder and helped him stand, very slowly.

"How do you feel?" she asked, once he was standing upright. "Do you need to sit down again?"

He merely nodded when she questioned him about Slughorn. He'd have to see him if he wanted to survive this. Severus really started to think about what had happened, and the more he thought, the more he realised just how badly he'd actually wanted this to happen, he just never wanted to face that part of him. It was never easy, admitting something so dark to oneself, especially when it ended in obviously irreversible death. It was a big choice to make on one's own, and arguably, should never be a choice one should have to make. But when you feel like you've lost everything...

Severus winced as she lifted him, feeling his knees giving way and falling forward on them, both arms instinctively going out to brace his fall while taking Lily with. He cried out in pain and felt his eyes water again as the stinging from his arm ramped up into another shock of heat and accompanying searing. The urge to get to Slughorn was so strong though; it caused him to crawl toward the door of the empty classroom, trailing blood in his wake, in neat patterns matching the shuffling of his knees. His robes were half-way soaked with all of the blood and he was getting nauseous from the smell of it.

"Slughorn," he kept muttering, determined to get to the professor that he knew would be most sympathetic to his plight.

Lily fell to the floor, but her own pain wasn't anything compared to his. She hurried over to his side, looking over at the cut on his arm. Warm blood was seeping through the rags she had wrapped around and she felt nauseous. All that work for nothing and they were back where they had started.

"Oh Severus, I don't know how to move you!" she said, feeling close to crying. He needed attention and fast, but how to get him there? She looked down at her wand, thinking over the various things she could do to help him. There was always levitation...but that took a lot of concentration and she wasn't sure if she could do it with her thoughts of Severus.

As he continued muttering she knew she had to make a decision and fast. She pointed her wand at him and muttered the spell. "Wingardium Leviosa". Severus rose a few inches in the air and Lily carefully began to steer him towards the door. She didn't want to drop him.

She was able to make it to Slughorn's personal door, knocking hurriedly and loudly. "We're here Severus," she whispered, looking down at her friend. "Profressor! Are you there? We need you're help!"

Severus felt himself being lifted and as unnerving as that was, it was simultaneously relieving to be off of his own abused body and in the hands of Lily's spell. A rush of warmth overtook him and he started to feel drowsy, though not as much from the blood loss as the spell and the overall situation panning out to something a little more positive. Lily was here, he finally realised. Not that he hadn't already noticed who it was; it was merely starting to sink in as he was being levitated to the help he so desperately needed. He tried so hard to keep his eyes open through it all.

A bit of rustling about was heard from the other side of the door till Professor Slughorn opened the small viewing slot, about to ask who had the nerve to get him up at this hour — that is, until he saw what was going on and started spluttering, "Why — why, what's — who —" He pulled open the door and waved them in, quickly reaching for Severus's bloody robe. "Quickly Miss Evans, by the hearth!" He pointed toward the blazing flames as he rushed toward his potions store, having seen the large gash and knowing what to do.

His hands reached for the essence of dittany in his cabinets as well as a Wiggenweld potion to bring Severus back to full awareness. Rushing over to them, he made sure that the boy was lying flat on his back while he lifted his head and helped him take the potion. After a successful majority of it went down, he proceeded to murmur a healing spell followed by a few drops of the essence of dittany over the deep gash. It appeared that there had been other wounds, but they were healed. Slughorn turned to Lily with an impressed look and said proudly, "Very good work, Miss Evans! He shall recover nicely with a bit of rest."

Doing a once-over to make sure that all of the wounds were tended to, he touched Severus's forehead and noted the clamminess and perspiration. Standing up, he turned to Lily and took her slightly aside, speaking in a low and grave voice. "While I do not wish to pry, I would be very watchful of him if I were you. He does not appear to have been in his right mind."

Meanwhile, Severus was sucking in breath at the sizzling pain of the essence of dittany, but all in all, he was starting to feel better. Clearing sable eyes focused on the coppery colours of the flame beside him and he started breathing more easily.

Lily felt relief wash over her as Professor Slughorn opened the door and ushered them in. It was even better that he didn't ask any questions, just went about helping Severus and applying the potions that would need him to heal. She stood to the side, not wanting to get in the way and to have Severus healed as quickly as possible.

She finally let the breath out that she was holding in as Slughorn stepped back from his patient and pulled her aside. She would have taken his praise, but she couldn't help but think that she was the cause for him not being right in the mind. If she hadn't said the terrible thing she had through the journals...Their friendship had been strained, even separated, but there was no need to be so low.

She didn't say anything, but just nodded her head and looked back at Severus as she heard him breath and gasp for air. Slughorn looked between the two and put a hand on her shoulder. "I will let you two be alone. He may stay in my chambers overnight until the morning. I will make sure he's back in the common room by breakfast." With that, Slughorn bid his good nights and went back into his bedroom.

Lily went over to Severus, taking a seat next to him on the group, brushing a strand of hair out of his eyes. "Severus? How are you feeling?"

Severus had started to let the multitude of sensations and emotions rush through his head, at one turn worsening his headache, but in another way, making him feel more at ease. The flames licked at his consciousness, keeping him awake and perfectly aware. The Wiggenweld potion settled warmly in his stomach, getting to work quickly. When he heard Lily sit next to him, he let his uninjured hand pass over her knees until it landed in her lap, his gaze focusing on that little movement while he answered her in a somewhat raspy tone.

"Like a muggle steamroller ran over my arm... but all right overall. Thank you." Almost as an afterthought. He let himself look up at her, moving his head with the movement of his eyes and letting himself enjoy the sight of the flames dancing along her cheeks. She was stunningly pretty, but he would never admit that aloud. In what seemed like a rare gesture, he allowed himself a small smile as the hand lifted from her lap and touched one of her cheeks.

"You don't know... it's been so long, I can't begin to tell you."

His words were coherent and she let out a sign of relief. The tension from only a few moments ago seemed to vanish in the warm room. He was fine and she felt herself relax with him. She had thought that this moment might be awkward, the two of them finally conversing. But it seemed only natural that it would be so easy again.

She closed her eyes and reached to place her hand over his, pressing it against her face. "I know," she said, knowing full well she did. She knew there was the animosity, the hurt between both of them. Deep down, she knew she wasn't the only one hurting from the incident. Still, she had been stubborn and made herself the victim, blaming him for everything else.

"We don't have to do this," she said, not wanting to ruin the moment. She just wanted to be here, talk easily with him again, not begin to argue about the past. "Besides, you should rest. Professor said you could stay here overnight."

Realising what he'd said, Severus turned his face away and tried to retract his hand, but then hers was atop his and he couldn't stop holding onto her. Slowly dragging his gaze back to watch her, he could only nod while he formulated his words. Anything that sounded coherent and light; he didn't want to ruin the moment either, but there was so much hurt, just so much anger between them that he didn't know how to go on. And when she mentioned Professor Slughorn, he knew what to say.

"Thank you for bringing me here. I may not have made it much longer if you hadn't." His soft tone belied the warring emotions within. Did he want to be here right now? Not too long ago, he realised that he was welcoming of death, but now that he was lying here, with Lily looking at him not with animosity, but with compassion, he couldn't feel even more different than before. All he'd really wanted was to get Lily back. He'd tried so hard, and was brushed off just like that. He simply couldn't hold back what he really wanted to say.

"Lily... I'm sorry. You know I'm so sorry for everything. I couldn't live knowing that I would never have you back in my life..." There, he'd said it, and he felt a little wave of relief passing through his core. The knots in his stomach released a fraction of their tense hold. If Lily wouldn't tell him to sod off right there, they might actually get someplace with their lost friendship.

"You're welcome," she said. "Severus, I was so worried! The stains on the page, you just laying there, looking so pale and the blood..." She shuddered thinking back on it. It was a memory she didn't want to go back to, but knew it was one she couldn't let go.

She felt her heart melt as he apologized, for everything, for opening up. Before she had been so terrible, stubborn with her own hurt that she didn't see his. "I know you are Severus," she said, looking down. "And I'm sorry for not forgiving you sooner. It...it was just hard. You were...are my best mate. And I didn't think you would say something so terrible." She looked over at him, her fingers running lightly through his hair. "I would think of all the times I ignored you or said terrible things back you would have given up on me!" She smiled at him, giving his hand a squeeze.

"But I'm glad you didn't." She knew from this that she never wanted to lose Severus from her life. He was an important part and nothing would ever change that.

"Do you need anything?" she asked, feeling how damp his hair was. "Water? Food?"

The small smile transformed into a genuinely happy one at her words. He didn't imagine that he could feel happy again, but there she went, proving him wrong yet again.

"I would never give up on you. You mean too much, didn't you know?" Severus stopped short of admitting anything more, the anxiety of earlier returning. He managed to pull his hand from hers, albeit reluctantly, and pushed himself up slowly. The robe he wore smelled bloody awful [quite literally] so he peeled it off and removed his wand, taking his time over his still sore arm. Without thinking twice, he tossed the robe into the flames. Sable gazed upon copper and blackness, mingling until all that was left was a smoking set of ashes. He would have to scrounge to get another robe, but right then, he didn't care about the cost. He needed to distance himself from what had happened. A little more satisfied, he turned back to Lily.

"I think rest is all I need right now, but thank you. I shall have to thank Professor Slughorn most profusely tomorrow." Of his own accord, he was able to stand very slowly despite the shakiness of his legs. When he thought he would remain stable, he held a hand out to Lily to help her up, as well. "Please do me a favour and never let me do something so ridiculous again?"

Lily smiled, shaking her head. "Maybe deep down I knew," she admitted. "But it's good to hear you say it out loud. I've really missed you Severus." She watched as he pushed himself up. "Wait, Severus-" Before she could say anymore, he was standing and throwing his robe into the fire. She was sure she wouldn't any article of clothing after an incident like that and said nothing more.

She looked up at him as he offered a hand and she stood as well. "Severus you shouldn't be standing. Please, won't you lay down? You need to rest." She reached out for his other hand and held it, looking down at them then back up at his face. She smiled weakly, nodding her head. "I promise I will never let you do that," she said. She hesitated for a moment, but took a step forward and moved her arms around him. It was perfect. So familiar and comforting that she wondered how she could have done without it for so long.

"Never leave me like that, ok? And never do something as stupid as what you just did. If you had left me for good, I don't think I would have survived. I would just be this walking shell." It seemed dramatic, but she knew it was true. If he had succeeded in his earlier endeavor, she would have blamed herself completely for his passing. But thank Merlin they had a second chance.

She stepped out of the hug and smiled again at him. "Really, you shouldn't be standing. Go to bed and get some rest. We can talk later, ok?"

His smile never once left him, and despite doing what Lily tried telling him not to, he felt better for it. When she stepped closer he immediately felt his heart rise up into his throat, and when her arms wrapped him in an embrace that he'd been craving for months, he let his head fall against her shoulder and encircled her within his own hug, momentarily ignoring the dull pain in his injured arm. He let himself enjoy it after that painful ordeal. When she pulled away, he felt an instant longing, but tamped it down in favour of finally acquiescing to her request.

"Yes, I probably should. I — " he began anew, but stopped and changed tacks, "Well, yes, we can talk later," he affirmed, nodding. With a last pass over her hand, he headed for the sofa in Professor Slughorn's sitting room, tossing one more thought over toward Lily. "I'm glad that you still consider me your..." he started to hesitate as his eyes ran across her face, but then just let it out, "well, your best friend, Lily. You've always been mine."

After the year of arguing, ignoring, and fights, everything seemed to be back to the way it was and Lily was happy. She smiled at Severus and nodded her head. "I don't think that will ever change Severus. I hope it never does." Everything she had now was thanks to Severus. He made her feel like she wasn't a monster, that her magical abilities were something to be cherished. If he hadn't come into her life that afternoon, she would have tried to hide her talents from her family, thinking to be ashamed of it.
