Picking Up Where They Left Off

Just when they had started to really get somewhere in their conversation a few days ago, an owl came and beckoned Alex home. It had been unconvenient, but Mona had been slightly grateful for the reprieve. When she had gone home to her own bed that night, she had cried hard into her pillow - for Alex and his loss and his condition; and for herself. She had cried for all the time spent apart from him and them both having to get to know each other once more.
She worried in the morning, with puffy eyes, what he might think of her when he found out more.
Mona had received an owl from Alex the next day suggesting they meet back up and finish their conversation. He had written to meet at the Leaky, which was fine with Mona and it was neutral ground. When she left the house, she had decided to wear a patchwork wool cap to hide her brightly coloured hair. She didn't need any more people staring at her; she wasn't up to glaring back.
Turning the corner in Diagon Alley, she saw Alex but before she could call out he was approached by another older bloke and it made her step into the shadows to look. Quickly, she saw the other bloke hand over something as Alex palmed back what looked like a phial, but Mona couldn't be too sure.
Just as quickly as it happened, Alex turned and went into the pub.
Mona found him sitting in a booth and she slid into the seat across from the table. It was noisy enough inside, but not too much that they couldn't talk.
"Hey, it's me," Mona said, knowing he would recognize her voice this time. "Nice spot you picked."
