Week 34: Friday
Characters: Alice Munroe, Greg Blair, Ana Kirke, Leo Parker, trader Zeke (NPC) with a cameo by Tom Galloway and introducing Halcyon Days and Colleen McCourt.
Location: Pro Electric Inc. on Mountain Fir Road in Grants Pass.
Summary: The Pro Electric group heads out to pick up their goods, and end up picking up a few extra bodies along the way.
Rating: PG-13
Coffee and food had been consumed, everyone was packed up, it was just about getting ready to go. Seeing as Pro Electric was further away, there was a slight delay in set-off time between the two groups, but she and Jed had touched base very briefly the night before to talk routes and so-forth. She was ready, and from a quick glance around at the eyes that had settled on her, so was everyone else.
“Right then,” she said, leaning back against the truck she was taking. A second vehicle with a hitch attached was also standing by. “This is the bigger of the two hauls, namely because it’s a bigger premises. The goal here is to get panels, wires, and framework only. There’s a lot of stuff around, but that’s our main objective. Stay in sight of each other at all times and if you need to go anywhere for any reason, make sure you’ve got back-up. We’ve got five hours to fill up and go, no exceptions.” Her eyes paused briefly on Zeke before sweeping back along the other faces.
“Each of the panels weighs about twenty pounds, and each box contains about five panels. Don’t lift what you can’t lift. I don’t want Louisa May getting on me because one of y’all threw your back out on this. If you can’t lift the weight, get another set of hands. I did see a manual fork lift in one of the warehouses, so we’ll hit that one first‘n be sure to grab that and see about maybe hitting all the rows up one after the other. Any questions so far?”
Greg shook his head. “If you’ve already investigated and they have a forklift I imagine we can get them loaded in an hour, two tops if we work at it.” The chevalier would be lying if he said he wasn’t excited at the idea of having electricity again, he’d lived without it but that wasn’t the same thing as not missing it.
“The sooner we get started the sooner we’ll get back.”
The idea of electricity had the whole house naturally buzzing. Ana had hoped she and Drew would be working together, but the decision was made to separate them. Something about one of them being okay if the other group ran into trouble.
“Let’s get goin’ then. I’m willin’ to take volunteers for someone to team up with me for loadin’.” She certainly wasn’t about to lift 100 pounds alone.
Alice smiled slightly. “Estrogen solidarity, eh?” she said.
“Yeah, baby,” Ana answered.
“Right then. Me ‘n Ana will ride over in the truck, all you good boys get the hatchback. I’ll lead us in, okay?” She paused as everyone nodded or spoke up with affirmation before continuing on. “We’ll run a walkie test in the cars, just double-check your ammo and supplies‘n then we’ll be off.”
Leo smirked some and stood from the car he’d been leaning against, his arms folded across his chest. “Do you even drive?” He asked Greg. It sounded like he was teasing but he was earnestly curious.
Greg turned his head slightly in Leo’s direction and cocked an eyebrow with an amused smile. “I know how if that is what you are asking. Horses didn’t need gas and didn’t have to stay on the roads.” He wasn’t quite sure why the women got the truck when they were smaller and could have handled the hatchback better, but it wasn’t worth an argument either. If it was one thing he’d learned over the years it was that men generally didn’t win arguments with women.
“Do you want to drive or should I take the wheel?”
“Doesn’t matter. I’ll drive.” Considering Greg hadn’t driven in awhile, whether he knew how or not, Leo gave the other man a good-natured smile and glanced up at Alice and the others. Besides, if something happened to Alice’s truck ahead of them, Leo wanted to be in control of the car.
He’d already checked his trusted old shotgun a half-dozen times, but one more check couldn’t hurt. “Ready when you are.”
“Enough of this jabberin’, I’m getting antsy,” Zeke joked with a good-natured smile. He headed toward the hatchback, checking his weapon as he went. “Shotgun!” he called, hopping into the passenger seat.
