Week 23 - Tuesday
Characters: Nate and Holly.
Location: Garage.
Summary: Holly has a confession to make.
Rating: PG-13
Flirting with Nate had been more than just refreshing, it had been fun. It had been a long time since fresh meat had been interested in him, and Holly really wanted to pursue it more than anything.
There was a catch, of course, and it was that Nate thought he was a woman. Holly had already played that game and, in a couple cases, lost horribly, so he decided he needed to come clean to Nate, no matter how damning it would be to his not-sex life.
Nate wasn’t very hard to find, but Holly wasn’t exactly thrilled he had to be in the garage, which was drafty. He snuggled down into his coat, and thankfully the high collar hid his frown.
“There you are,” Holly said, by way of greeting, “hard at work. What a good little boy.”
Nate stood staring at the engine of the vehicle, he didn’t have anything that needed to be done at that second and he was certain that he could make the care more efficient. He had been lost in thought, his arms crossed his chest for warmth as he worked through his initial calibrations in his head. His head snapped up and it took him a minute to realize who had come in and started talking to him.
He smiled when he realized that Holly was there. He leaned back against the wall and grinned. “Hey Gorgeous, what brings you out here? Wouldn’t want you getting dirty.”
“Wouldn’t?” Thinking of all of the flirting possibilities including the word dirty were enough to bring a smile to Holly’s face, but before he fell into their normal routine and invaded Nate’s space, he reminded himself of why he was there. Essentially, it was to clockblock himself. Guh. Yeah, that totally erased any hint or thought of a smile.
“Actually,” he said, “you probably wouldn’t.” Holly’s whole demeanor changed, becoming more closed off as he wrapped his arms around himself.
“Not out here anyway.” He said with a wink, stepping forward again to shut the car hood, it could wait for a few minutes. The large metal flap closed with a clang, despite how gently Nate had attempted to close it. With a smile, he’d looked back over at Holly, but he could already tell something was wrong.
“Whats on your mind?” He said softly, stepping a little bit closer.
Holly didn’t budge from his spot, but to stand his ground he had to fight a strong urge to run. There were about a million other things he’d rather be doing, so he guessed he should just get it over with.
“Yeah, about that,” he deadpanned. “I’m a guy.”
Nate just blinked a bit, and the step forward was now counter acted by a few stumbling footsteps backwards. At first, he simply looked confused his eyebrows knitted together, and his head slightly tilted to the side.
“You’re a what?” He asked, shaking his head just a little. “No way. You’re joking!” With that came a slightly forced chuckle. Holly had to be joking right? No dude he’d ever known looked like that.
“I’d show you my dick for proof, but I don’t want to get punched in it,” Holly said. The whole thing was going much as he’d expected it. Nate was confused, no longer warm or welcoming, and he was moving away. At least Holly was pretty sure Nate wasn’t going to turn around and set the farm on fire afterward.
“I’ll save you some breath, even,” Holly continued, ignoring the way his heart was hammering in his chest in favor of acting flippant. “I already know I’m a sick fuck, I’ll stay away from you, and - oh, yeah - I honestly do believe you’re not gay. I’m very convincing.”
Nate just stared. He had never been particularly eloquent to begin with, but he couldn’t even form the words in his head. He just blinked a couple of times and began focusing on the second half of Holly’s little speech.
“No--- I don’t... It’s.” He closed his mouth again, his hand running through his hair. “There ain’t... there aint anything wrong with bein’ that way. I just didn’t see it comin’ and I...” He really didn’t know all of what he was trying to get out. He wanted Holly to know that he didn’t hate gay people, but at the same time, in this very moment he didn’t really want to be around Holly. He’d actually quite enjoyed flirting with him... when he was a her. Now he just felt weird about the whole thing.
When it was clear Nate didn’t have any angry words to aim at him, Holly deflated. “It’s okay,” he sighed. “That’s why I told you.”
“I um... sorry? I guess?” Nate just kinda shrugged, he wasn’t really sure what Holly wanted him to say. He pushed himself off the wall he’d stumbled back against, though not getting particularly close to Holly. “I’m just... not into that.”
“It’s....” okay? It wasn’t okay. Holly closed his eyes in a grimace. “See you around,” he said at length, before turning on his heel to head out the way he’d come in.
Nate just let Holly leave as he stared at his shoes. There were a couple of things that Nate wanted to say to him, but he didn’t. He was still trying to figure out just how he hadn’t noticed that the person he’d been flirting with was a man. He didn’t hate Holly, things were just weird in his head at the moment.
