Week 22 - Saturday
Characters: Jack Baker and Molly Williams.
Location: Molly and Jacks room in the Farmhouse.
Summary: Jack comes to visit Molly while she’s sick, they make slightly awkward conversation.
Rating: G
Molly’s few days had been terrifying. She had spent days caught in delusions, coughing so much her throat hurt, feverish and exhausted. Today, however, she had felt better. She wasn’t back to normal, not by a long shot, but she felt less congested and she could stay awake and eat when Drew brought her food. She spent most hours during the day, laying, curled up tightly in a bunch of blankets drifting between dreams and reality.
She heard the door open, and it took her a second to force herself into action. She pushed herself up to look at her visitor, coughing just a little as she did so. She gave Jack a lopsided smile. “Uh... hey.”
It’d taken Jack days to work up the nerve to visit Molly. She’d been sleeping in Bridget’s room since Molly fell sick and hadn’t seen the girl all week. The idea of being near illness was too frightening. It reminded her of when everyone got sick; the way everyone was urged to avoid physical contact, white masks on faces, the smell of the hospital her mom had been in. Jack didn’t want anything to do with sickness.
But Molly was her friend and she’d been assured that pnuemonia wasn’t the kind of sick you could catch. She’d waited until she was told Molly was a little better for a visitor and then she screwed up her courage and went to see her. She left Bosie outside. No way would she risk her dog getting sick, either.
“Hi, Molly,” Jack said, still keeping a decent amount of distance between them. “How - how are you?”
Molly noticed the distance at which Jack stood. At first, it kind of hurt, but Molly pushed passed it. She could understand why someone would want to stay away and she figured if the tables were turned she would be acting the same way.
“I’m doing okay.” She said with a slow nod of her head. “Getting better at any rate, which is a good thing. How about you?” It was clear that Jack was uncomfortable with the sickness, so Molly tried to guide her way passed it.
“I’m fine. I’ve been taking real good care of Rogue for you,” Jack offered. “She misses you. Everybody does.”
“I bet you are, she likes you a lot.” Molly practically beamed at the mention of her cat. She was glad that someone was remembering to feed Rogue and stuff while she was sick. “I’ll probably up and around soon enough. You guys doing anything exciting while I’m stuck all up here?” Molly doubted it of course, there was rarely anything worth deeming exciting around the farmhouse minus new people joining, but it was worth a shot.
“Mike’s building this called a gassifer.” Jack wasn’t sure about going any closer but she felt silly standing, so she took a seat on the floor. “It burns wood and he says it turns it into gas. Maybe even enough to run generators and get the electricity back.”
“Permanent electricity or just emergency electricity? Do ya think it will work?” Molly asked, rapid fire at Jack. She didn’t expect Jack to have all the answers, and it didn’t really matter to her, just the concept of maybe having a heater or something else on once in a while was exciting to her. She knew better than to complain about their new way of life, but she did miss a lot of the old conveniences like lights.
“I don’t know. I don’t even know if it’s possible to get gas from wood but Mike says you can.” Jack shifted, drawing her knees close to her chest and resting her casted arm on them. “He says it’s like melting the wood. Melt ice you get wire, melt wood and you get gas,” she explained.
Molly tilted her head a little bit, sort of confused by the whole notion of melting wood, but he figured if anyone knew how to do something like that it would be Mike. “I thought wood only burned.” Molly muttered a little bit with a shrug of her shoulders. “But thats cool. Thats real cool.”
“He’s going to let me help!” Jack continued excitedly. “I don’t know how but he said I could.” Her face fell a little when she finished answering. Molly couldn’t do anything fun like that while she was stuck in bed and Jack felt a little like she was rubbing it in.
“Thats awesome! I wouldn’t be good at that sort of thing, never had much room for math or science type stuff in the brain. But it’ll be pretty fun I bet.” Molly smiled, genuinely happy for the other girl, however, she did notice the fall in her face. “You okay, Jack?”
“Yeah...” the other girl answered slowly. “I just feel really bad you’re sick.”
Molly frowned, running a hand through hair that hadn’t been kept up all week. “Don’t worry about it, Jack.” she said softly, “stuff happens. It sucks, but I’ll be okay.”
Jack swallowed nervously. Jed said almost the exact same thing but some part of her still felt bad. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry Bosie ran away from you.”
Molly wanted to comfort Jack, but she knew better than to make a move toward her. “Its okay, Jack. I shoulda had a better hold on him or something.”
Jack didn’t know what else to say about that, so she nodded. “Okay.” She stared down at her cast for a second. “Do you need anything? Or want anything? I can bring you stuff if you want.”
“I’m fine, actually.” She said with a smile, “Drew is pretty good about popping up here and making sure that I have everything that I need. But thanks.” She wouldn’t want Jack to be up here out of obligation anyway.
“Okay.” Jack stretched her legs out in front of her. “I hope you get better soon, Molly.”
“With everything the Doc says, it shouldn’t be too long. I just cant wait till I can actually get up and do things again.” Molly chuckled a bit.
Jack laughed too. “Bet you’ll take that back when you have to go back to sharing the room with me.”
“Oh, you aren’t so bad.” Molly teased. “I think I can put up with you for a little while longer.”
“You mean I can put up with you,” Jack grinned back.
Molly rolled her eyes with a chuckle, “If thats what makes you feel better at night.” She winked.
Jack stuck her tongue out. “You know you miss me.”
“Okay, okay. Maybe. A little.” Molly grinned, “Its super quiet in here sometimes.”
“If it’s okay, I’ll ask the doctor if Rogue can come visit you.” That should help. Jack would hate to be separated from Bosie.
“That would be awesome. I kinda miss the silly little kitten.” She said with a grin. She didn’t see why the doctor would say no, as people were allowed to freely walk in and out, but they’d have to see.
“I’ll check.” Jack bit her lip. “Maybe - maybe Bosie can stay with you sometimes, too. He’s good company.” Offering Molly her dog was the biggest best thing Jack could think to do to help Molly, though it was hard to even suggest it.
“I’d like that, if its okay with you and all.” Molly said with a wide grin. After nearly losing the dog to begin with, Molly was actually a little surprised that Jack was even offering. But, Molly did adore the mutt, so she wasn’t about to say no. “He’s a good dog, he’ll be plenty entertaining.”
Jack fought the urge to take the offer back. “He will be.” She climbed back to her feet. “I should check on him now though. I’ll ask Dr. Smith if it’s okay.” And make sure Bosie can’t catch what you have.
“Alrighty. Well. I’ll be here.” she said with a little smile. “I’ll see ya later.”
“Bye, Molly.” Jack smiled a little at her. “Feel better.”
