network post: inara serra
It's far past time I introduced myself properly. My name is Inara Serra and I've been asked to counsel those among us who might feel the need to talk to someone about what's bothering them. Trust me when I say that I've heard it all before, so please don't feel shy about opening up. We all feel pain; the differences are just details. What matters is how we unburden ourselves, and to whom.

I've been keeping to myself more than I should while getting my bearings, but those whom I've met have been unfailingly kind and welcoming. If you'd like to talk, you can contact me privately, but I'll be working out of the medical areas of our community for the most part. I look forward to being of service.

Thank you. And your name would be?

Finnick Odair at your service, ma'am.

And what sort of service would that be?

The service of being charming and dashingly good looking, of course.

I fish here.

You're certainly fishing for something, Mr. Odair.

I swear I was just trying to give a nice welcome and now this has gotten out of hand.

And here I was starting to believe you were up for that charming thing.

I'm afraid I can only fail at charming.

And the handsome part?

A complete lie.

Do you at least fish?

Absolutely.

So you're one for three, Mr. Odair. I suspect I'll have to keep an eye on you.

At least you know I'm a terrible liar now.

Oh, you're nothing of the kind. But you're clever enough to make it look that way.

Calling me a liar about being a liar and we've barely just met.

You could always choose to focus on the fact that I also called you clever.

What do you do where you're from?

I'm finding that the profession doesn't translate well to other situations.

I'm a registered Companion. An escort for hire, if you will.

And you can choose that as a profession in your world?

Choosing isn't the right word. You must earn the right to contract with a guild. It takes years of study and training. History, literature, language, music, martial arts.. the study is seemingly endless. But the respectability provided by the guilds is quite significant. There are very few places where I come from that don't welcome the presence of a Companion.

Of course, that varies some from world to world. On some of the border planets, there's little distinction between a Companion and a whore. Until someone sets them straight.

It doesn't surprise me that there's translation problem there. I doubt there are many places that have a system like that.

You wouldn't happen to be from the same universe as the Tams?

No, I don't think are. It took a long time for this profession to lost its stigma where I'm from, and even then misconceptions persist.

I am. They're good friends of mine, in fact. I don't think there's much of a coincidence that the people who come here tend to come in close-knit groups. Do you have friends here from your home?

I believe it.

Dr. Tam helped my sister with an injury a few weeks ago. And my wife and son, and a few of our friends, are here.
