Valentine's Day Party
The elementary students had had a low key party with punch and cookies and large amounts of glitter earlier in the day. That had all been cleaned up before dinner, though, and now the assembly hall in the main building had been...well, transformed would have been over-stating it, but it was definitely festive. Crepe paper streamers in red and pink and white had been strung from the chandeliers and along the walls, and tables down one side of the room were covered in actual fabric table cloths in matching colors, the surfaces littered with paper hearts and glitter and, almost incongruously, tasteful arrangements of red and pink roses with baby's breath. There was the obligatory punch bowl flanked by trays of elaborately decorated cookies and cupcakes, as well as platters of finger foods of varying degrees of sophistication and complexity. The chandeliers overhead had been dimmed to create a suitably 'romantic' atmosphere, while not making it too dark for the comfort of the few chaperones scattered about the room keeping a tolerant eye on the middle and high school students as they milled about, some dancing to the DJ provided music while others lingered in corners or slipped out into the lobby beyond the great double doors or the moonlit garden just outside.

In the lobby the music was muted, and clashed only slightly with the music escaping from the ballroom on the other side, where the college students were having their own event. The lobby was a large space, with thick rugs in the school colors covering the hardwood floors, and portraits of the founders looking down from the walls on a few groupings of heavy leather armchairs and tables scattered with informational brochures as well as a few free range decorations. The restrooms occupied opposite corners, and small groups of students of all ages lingered in the room, on their way in or out or simply escaping one event or the other for a while.

In the ballroom beyond, the streamers were absent there (though not the glitter), and the decorations ran to a more sophisticated black and red, with circular tables and chairs scattered around the edges of the dance floor in addition to the refreshment tables. The lights were lower as well, and there was a decided lack of chaperones monitoring the festivities as the older students enjoyed an event blissfully free from the restrictions of uniforms and dress codes.

That made her dissolve into giggles, which drew a few stares from some of their classmates scattered around the room. Hope didn't mind, though. They should have been used to her by now anyway.

"One can never come between a person and their fate, I suppose," she said, throwing a hand across her forehead dramatically as she stared up at the ceiling. "Some things are just," she paused for emphasis, "destiny."

"Go. Give yourself completely to your Southern roots. Let them bathe your soul in calamity and charm."

"Ah, but e'ery good southern boy needs a lady on his arm," he replied, holding out his arm with a small bow. "Miss Hope Abbott, would y' do me th' glorious honor of your esteemed company this fine evenin'?"

"I do believe that I shall have to accept the offer when you put it as sweetly as that," she said, batting her eyelashes and then wrapped his arm with both of hers. "At least for a while. I have so many other suitors that I have shall to divide my time between them all. Shall we promenade?" There was no way that she was even going to attempt the Southern bell drawl, but she could maybe fake some of the phrases.

Jay grinned widely, straightening. "As m' lady wishes." He started across the room, Hope's arm tucked in his. "It's such a seasonably warm evenin', don't y' agree?"

She grabbed a napkin from the table and folded it quickly into a facsimile of a fan that she proceeded to wave in front of her hair as she walked. "It does make for a pleasant walkabout, though, I must say." By now she had forced the giggles down, though she was still smiling broadly, and slipped into the play role.

"It's such a handsome party. I only wish that the threat of attack by escaped radioactive monkeys wasn't so near the front of my mind."

Gone With the Wind was a classic, but Hope found it a little lacking.

"Now don't you worry 'bout that none, Miss Hope. We're bound t' lick 'em monkeys real good. I hear, they taste of antifreeze though, so I doubt it's a truly genteel thing t' be mentioning 'round any lady. Beg pardon."

"Don't you go worrying your head about silly little things like that. My daddy taught me to shoot mighty good so I can help you pick them out of the sky if I need to. We just don't have to tell anyone. It can get our secret that I'm a monkey slayer."

Jay paused to gasp dramatically. "Why Miss Hope, I could allow y' t' do no such thing! Why don't you know them monkeys explode when they're fired at? Do y' wanna get purple ooze all over your fine dress?"

Hope patted his hand gently to console him. "I know it entails a very big sacrifice, but I would be willing to make it if it was required of me. Besides then I could just have new dresses made. I daresay that I'm not sure there's a downside to the situation."

"Unless if offends your sensibilities too much in which case I won't press."

Jay scoffed. "My sensibilities?! Why Ms. Hope, it is your delicate nature I'm most worried about!"

"I think you'll find, Mr. Guthrie, that my nature isn't quite as delicate as you might fear," she said, looking over her paper fan at him.

The corner of his smile quirked. "Why is that so, Miss Abbott?"

Pausing dramatically in their stroll, Hope glanced over her shoulders and all around the room as though she were trying to make sure that no one overheard them before she leaned in closer to him and dropped her voice to a whisper. "I happen to be one of the leaders of the local liberation front out to end these monkey attacks once and for all. Of course I attend meetings disguised as man so we cannot let word get out. I feel as though I can entrust you with my secret."

Jay gasped dramatically, then leaned in to smile at her. "Living dangerously as ever, I see, Miss Abbott. Whenever your...'brother' needs a favor, see that he speaks t' me. I'd be willing t' help 'him' fight those monkeys on th' very front lines!"

Hope smiled and folded her fan. "I like my life the way I like my coffee: hot enough where it might burn me and always potentially poisoned."

"There's been an awful problem round here with geese honking at midnight. He's got a bit of a mind to take care of them tonight."

He grinned at her coffee comment, before parading her to the left toward the windows. "I think I might be able t' help him out with that. Don't right know what he has in mind for 'em though."

Once they were near the windows, Hope stopped their progress, checking over her shoulder again and then glancing outside. "It'll have to be something drastic. I know it just sounds awful, but we've been stocking up on aerial explosives."

"I dunno if I'd rightly call it a pop so much as a boom. Unless you were speaking of the monkeys. They typically go pop after encountering one."

"Well now," he said as the music shifted gears. "We've settled business. Why don't you and I have ourselves a nice dance?" He stepped away from her to give a bow and hold out his hand. "If you'd do me the honor."

"The pleasure is all mine, Miss Abbott." And he lead her to the dance floor.
