Valentine's Day Party
The elementary students had had a low key party with punch and cookies and large amounts of glitter earlier in the day. That had all been cleaned up before dinner, though, and now the assembly hall in the main building had been...well, transformed would have been over-stating it, but it was definitely festive. Crepe paper streamers in red and pink and white had been strung from the chandeliers and along the walls, and tables down one side of the room were covered in actual fabric table cloths in matching colors, the surfaces littered with paper hearts and glitter and, almost incongruously, tasteful arrangements of red and pink roses with baby's breath. There was the obligatory punch bowl flanked by trays of elaborately decorated cookies and cupcakes, as well as platters of finger foods of varying degrees of sophistication and complexity. The chandeliers overhead had been dimmed to create a suitably 'romantic' atmosphere, while not making it too dark for the comfort of the few chaperones scattered about the room keeping a tolerant eye on the middle and high school students as they milled about, some dancing to the DJ provided music while others lingered in corners or slipped out into the lobby beyond the great double doors or the moonlit garden just outside.

In the lobby the music was muted, and clashed only slightly with the music escaping from the ballroom on the other side, where the college students were having their own event. The lobby was a large space, with thick rugs in the school colors covering the hardwood floors, and portraits of the founders looking down from the walls on a few groupings of heavy leather armchairs and tables scattered with informational brochures as well as a few free range decorations. The restrooms occupied opposite corners, and small groups of students of all ages lingered in the room, on their way in or out or simply escaping one event or the other for a while.

In the ballroom beyond, the streamers were absent there (though not the glitter), and the decorations ran to a more sophisticated black and red, with circular tables and chairs scattered around the edges of the dance floor in addition to the refreshment tables. The lights were lower as well, and there was a decided lack of chaperones monitoring the festivities as the older students enjoyed an event blissfully free from the restrictions of uniforms and dress codes.

By the time JP joined her, Anna had given up on not being obvious. The couple was far too entertaining for her to ignore their little show completely. She did glance to the side when JP arrived, but her attention went right back to the break-up until he turned to her and... held out a rose.

"The water definitely hasn't, but I don't know about the rest of it," she replied, holding her cup up as she plucked the rose from his hand with a slightly confused smile. "Thanks?"

"I apparently have a not-so-secret admirer." JP replied flatly, his eyes falling back on the pair as he continued to speak. "Can't remember his name either. I'm a bad person." He sounded a little thoughtful at that, glancing back down at what was left of the bouquet in his hands, only to look once more at their entertainment.

"The flowers are pretty though, but I've got no effing clue what 'orange' means. Other than...you know...'highly toxic'...." He seemed to consider that for a moment, though his eyes never drifted. "Don't think too many people want to kill me though. At least no more than usual."

"You're a horrible person," she agreed, rolling the stem of the flower between gloved fingers and turning her attention back to the fighting couple.

"Yeah... or imprisoned. Jails use orange." She looked at him, raising an eyebrow. "You do anything illegal recently?" She jerked her eyes back to the couple as the girl ripped a corsage from her wrist and threw it to the ground, then walked away. "Ouch. Happy Valentines day."

"In your country or in mine?" JP asked thoughtfully, looking away just in time to miss the corsage ripping, though his gaze went back immediately, searching for the cause of the comment before he let out one short, loud laugh. "Eeeeeh, I bet he had it coming. I mean, you can just tell. He looks guilty." He waved his free hand lightly in the guy's direction, but didn't know exactly what he meant by that.

"So, am I your hot date for this evening?" He offered her a smile, his head tilting a little to the side.

"Who even buys a corsage in college anyway?" Anna shook her head. The guy definitely had it coming. Even if he didn't. She vaguely remembered him being somewhat obnoxious, but that had been years ago, and maybe it was just a little bit sweet that he'd bought a corsage... or maybe he'd done it to make up for whatever it was that got his girlfriend so mad. Either way, the show was over.

"I guess so," she replied, finishing off her water. "At least until I get bored and find an excuse to ditch you. That's pretty much standard at these kinds of things, right?"

"Well, I'm assuming that he probably called his mom or something and she told him that was what he was supposed to do for a formal get-together. Moms usually don't have any sense to the updated norm." The Canadian shrugged a shoulder, watching the guy in question sulk off elsewhere, not really terribly curious as to what that whole drama had been about to begin with.

"It is when I'm your date." JP feigned a sigh, plucking a finger against a flower petal as he pretended to look dejected. "Can't ever keep me a fine woman." With an exasperated sigh, he flopped both arms down to his sides and eyed her. "Why is that?" A split second later he looked awkwardly thoughtful, chewing a little on his lower lip. "Oh yeeeeah, the gay thing."

After a second he just smiled at her and shook his head. "You can do whatever you want. I just came to check things out for a bit. Everyone else ran off too."

Anna shrugged, watching the guy walk away. Whatever had prompted the purchase of the corsage, it clearly hadn't been enough to stave off the end of his relationship. He was most likely headed back to his dorm to drown himself in alcohol... and it was half tempting to follow him back and invite herself to join in.

"Yeah, that's your problem right there," she agreed, finishing off her water and setting the cup on the table beside her. "You know, the dance that the elementary school kids had earlier today was a lot more exciting than this one."

"Yeah, they had way more dance-floor breakups." JP scoffed before eying her. "Why were you at the elementary school dance?" Not that he didn't think little kids having a valentine's day dance couldn't be the cutest thing on the planet, but he also figured it would turn out more like a party, considering at that age both genders were still relatively squicky about one another usually.

"Cuter ones, too." She crossed her arms, looking out at the other partygoers. Definitely a lot cuter. There had been more of those drug store Valentine's day cards, too, which had been fun to watch and read. Turning her head, she nodded. "I chaperoned. My niece goes to the elementary school."
