Ali, open!
The half hour nap that Anna had taken after her shower had not been nearly long enough, but the whole needing to get up soon or face having to actually drive somewhere to get food prospect was enough to drag her out of bed again. She had pulled on a clean uniform and, along with her roommate, had trudged over to the food court at the student center. The cafeteria was just too far.

There was a little bit of a crowd in the food court, but they seemed, by and large, to understand that none of the cadets were much in the mood to stand in lines while people took their precious time deciding what they wanted to eat, and the pair had made their way through relatively quickly.

"I'm not doing any homework tonight," she informed Ali as she dropped her tray onto a table and then dropped her ass heavily into her seat. "I am way too fucking tired for that."

"No," Ali said, drawing the O out like a petulant child. "I wouldn't leave you. You could join my band. I need more awesome people."

Then she poked at the food on her plate, which was basically pudding, mashed potatoes and soup. A holy trinity of thou shalt not chew. "Did you get any straws?"

"Do you know how much my mom would murder me if I went AWOL and joined a band?" Shaking her head, she finally reached for her fork. Salad was delicious, but it wasn't the best to eat with just your fingers. At the straw question, she took a closer look at what Ali had picked to eat. "Um. No. Especially if you're going to be drinking your dinner, because that's gross."

The comment about Anna's mom made Ali grimace a little. "I bet she would come after me, too. No offense but your mom is a little scary. I mean that in the best possible way."

"If I could flail, I would be flailing." Then Ali picked herself up, grabbed the fork and started picking at the mashed potatoes, which weren't terrible.

"She's had a lot of time to work on being intimidating," Anna agreed, spearing some of her salad. It also didn't really help that you could never see her pupils, so you had no idea where she was looking at any given time. That was kind of scary, too.

"I'm glad you can't flail." Anna abandoned her salad momentarily to go for her own soup. It definitely looked easier. "Tomorrow's run is going to suck."

Piotr pretty much just wanted to flop down in bed and sleep forever, but his stomach had strongly protested that idea when he'd tried it. He'd made a valiant effort, but eventually he'd given up, taken a quick shower, and made his way over to the closest place he could get something to eat.

He spotted a pair of familiar faces while he grabbed his food, and he headed over after he was done.

"Hey," he greeted as he sat down next to Anna, attempting to muster up enough energy to sound happy to see them. He was sort of successful. Maybe.

Ali was tempted to start crying when Anna mentioned the morning run. "If I fall down, will you just pull me?"

When Petey sat down, she tried to smile but her face hurt. "Petey. Hey. Welcome to the feel like ass table. Enjoy the lackluster, bitchy company."

"I'll pull you back up, but then you're on your own." She ate a couple of spoonfuls of her soup, trying to find something good about the prospect of having to be up way too early to run again in the morning. It didn't work so well. Thankfully, Piotr decided to join them, putting her off the hook for the false optimism that she was sure she couldn't scrape up.

"Hey," she smiled, turning to look at him as he sat down. He looked about as wiped as they did, which was good and bad. She looked back over at Ali after a moment (hopefully not too long of a moment, because she was sure that Ali would poke fun at her later, even if she wasn't awake enough to do it just then), half snorting as Ali gave him the official welcome. Nodding toward Ali's tray, she informed Piotr, "Ali apparently lost all of her teeth during training."

He chuckled lightly at Ali's greeting. "Excellent, I'm in the right place, then." He then frowned, remembering the last bits of conversation he'd heard as he walked up, and asked her, "Are you in danger of falling out of your seat?"

At Anna's comment, he looked over at Ali's tray and the assortment of soft foods. "Apparently. Don't know if I should be relieved not to be the first one of us having to contemplate dentures or concerned for the future of my own teeth."

Ali made a face. "No. We were talking about tomorrow's run. I want her to just drag me if I go down."

There was no way she could even think straight to catch Anna's look. Maybe tomorrow. If she remembered what had happened today, which was debatable. "It's not my teeth. I didn't want to lift my arms. But someone," she glared at Anna, "didn't grab a straw."

"You're not hiding a straw anywhere, are you, Petey?"

"I'm pretty sure that a bunch of us are going to lose teeth before we're done with it all," she assured Piotr, reaching to give him a pat on the back. Rolling her eyes, she looked back at Ali. "It's my job to figure out that you want straws?"

She hadn't really realized that her hand was still on Piotr's back until she Ali turned the question on him, and she withdrew it quickly to resume eating her soup. She looked around and then pointed out, "You could probably yell for a straw and someone would be intimidated enough to just bring it for you."

Piotr definitely agreed with Ali's face. "Oh, man. I was trying to forget about that."

He grinned a bit at Anna, his smile widening when she left her hand on his back. "Probably. We'll just have to hope our health plan covers expensive dentures."

When Anna pulled her hand away, he tried not to let his disappointment show. Or at least, hoped it passed as just tiredness. "I do, actually," he told Ali, picking up the straw off his tray and handing it over. "I was going to use it so I didn't have to lean over to drink my milk, but I'll sacrifice. You guys're the ones who'll have to deal with my milk mustache."

"Yes, Anna. It's in that best friends contract I made you sign. Not the one when I was drunk, but the other one."

Okay, she hadn't caught the glance, but she did catch the lingering hand and raised one eyebrow slightly. She was entirely too tired to make a deal out of it but did file it all away for later. For sneaky sneaky talks with Anna later. When her body wasn't slowly coming apart.

"Our health plan covers everything."

And then Ali was distracted again by the straw. The joyous, perfect straw. "No need to yell at the other. Sir Piotr here provides." Very slowly grabbing the straw, she plunked it into her soup, set her head back on her folded arms and proceeded to drink. "Thank you. And no one going to dare point and laugh at a milk mustache on you anyway."

"That's not a legal document." She smiled at the health plan talk, nodding in agreement with Ali. Their health plan was pretty good. She hoped. She hadn't really had reason to use it since becoming a cadet, but given how much they put them through, it had to be an awesome one.

When Piotr handed over the straw, she rolled her eyes, picking the bowl of soup up so she could drink the broth. She grinned at Ali, shaking her head slightly. "You're ridiculous."

"She's right," Anna agreed, turning to Piotr. "You're pretty intimidating." To people who didn't actually know him, at least. "We'll probably make fun of you, but you know that we're doing it out of love, so maybe that will cushion the blow a little bit?"

"It better," Piotr commented, but there was no real irritation in his voice. Possibly because he was too tired to produce it, but still.

He chuckled slightly as Ali took the straw he offered. "I'm here only to serve," he teased idly, opening up his milk and taking a long gulp.

"Mmm," he said in agreement to the intimidation comments, then realized a response that actually had words would probably be better. "Being intimidating does have its perks." Then he glanced sideways at Anna. "It might, but I'll still be crushed on the inside."

"It so is a legal document," Ali said petulantly She had the tendency to get snippy and a little bit childish when she was overly tired, and she was downright exhausted so things were just going to get worse as time drug on.

The straw made everything so much easier. She could drink the soup and maybe the pudding. The mashed potatoes had been a pipe dream. They were too thick. "I'm hungry and everything hurts. This is the only way."

"Aw," Ali made an exaggerated frown. "No crushed feelings." Ali was awake enough to give Anna a look but she couldn't be sure if the other girl would catch it or not. "I'm sure there's a solution for crushed feelings."

Anna smiled at Ali, shaking her head slightly. She was pretty sure that she wasn't violating any contracts, legal or not. Maybe. She was actually too tired to remember. She just kept on smiling at Ali as she drank her soup. It was a lot funnier than she was really capable of expressing just then.

Shaking her head sadly at Piotr, she opened her mouth to tell him not to be crushed, but Ali beat her to it. She nodded in agreement, glancing in Ali's direction... and catching a look that she wasn't sure she completely wanted to know the meaning of. She raised an eyebrow at Ali's next statement. "Probably... you have anything specific in mind, DT?"

He watched the girls drink their soups, and wished he'd thought of getting food that required less effort to eat. Oh, well. He probably would have had to grab five or six bowls of soup in order to actually make an impact on his hunger.

Piotr chuckled slightly at Ali's exaggerated frown and her assertion that there should be no crushed feelings. He raised one eyebrow as they started talking about a solution. "Does this solution require actually doing anything?"
