Jay
Lizzie was positively thrilled that her shirt'd been found. She really liked the way that one was coming along; it would have been so disappointing to have to try and find another one close enough to it that would produce similar enough results.

She straightened up her room a bit (she'd gotten a bit frantic there towards the end in her looking, and she'd feel too guilty to leave a mess for her roommates to see when they got back), and then headed over to Jay's room.

"Jay!" she called, in a slightly singsong voice, tapping on the door.

"That's so not even good to joke about," she told him, though she totally understood what he meant. "You better not be explodin', or I'll find some way to get you back and kick your butt for leavin' me like that." And she completely would, too. Somehow.

She smoothed the hand that wasn't carding through his hair over his back again, sighing quietly as he hugged her tightly. "It'll be okay, Jay. It's gotta be."

She would too. If she had to grow all the way to heaven and pluck him out. She'd know where to find him. She'd always known where to find him.

"Yeah," he agreed, though he didn't quite believe it. "Yeah, it will."

It was pretty obvious that he wasn't quite sure. But then, if it'd been reversed, she'd be right there with him. Heck, she had been right there with him. But Lizzie believed it, because, well, she had to. And the staff said so, so that had to mean something.

"Doesn't mean it don't suck in the meantime, though," she said, working her fingers up his back at to the base of his neck.

"That it don't." He twirled a bit of blonde hair about his index finger. Sometimes he wondered how two people who'd spent nearly a year together in the womb could come out looking so different, and so alike all at the same time.

She smiled at him, watching him twirl her hair around, and debated just taking a nap right there. Lizzie hadn't been tired when she'd come in, and she wasn't really tired right then, but there was something very soothing about curling up with him.

"If I fall asleep, just poke me awake when you notice, will ya?" she asked, mostly teasing, walking her fingers down his back once again to return to a knot that was being particularly stubborn.

Jay was likewise starting to feel like nodding off would be the best thing ever. They'd been getting older when Daddy passed, had had their own beds and rooms they shared with their brothers and sisters and everything. They'd moved to New York and into dormitories, where they still had to share space, but it was bigger and they weren't related to their roommates which provided a significant advantage. They'd more or less grown up a little separate for months now. But old habits refused to die, and sometimes when he couldn't sleep, Jay let his mind and body drift. Falling into the memories of laying together in the hammock under the shade and just swaying for hours in the summertime. Curled up like kittens and sharing everything. The smell of the sweet, warm Kentucky air, and the sounds of all the bugs humming around them in the tall grass and up in the trees.

"Mmhmm," he replied, falling easily into the memory with Lizzie pressed against him. Content to fall asleep sitting up, with his cheek to her shoulder. And then the knot she was rubbing twitched, and Jay's whole body froze at the utterly alien feeling.

Homesick. She wondered if it was a little homesick-ness she felt, when snuggling up with him like this could calm her down and start putting her to sleep like nothing else could, reminding her of family and times when they'd all been so much closer together. Not that it'd been better or worse then or now, just different. But she missed it sometimes, missed him, which was silly, cause it wasn't like he or any of the rest of her siblings were all that far away.

Lizzie's eyes were already closed by the time she registered his murmur, though she was still rubbing at his back. And then - hell, that was definitely a twitch, and her eyes shot open.

"Jay?"

Brow furrowed, Jay was busy trying to locate the source of the feeling. Knowing the movement of the muscles in one's back wasn't exactly a difficult feat, especially when one played sports as often as Jay did. He knew how his body moved, and when he was pushing too hard, and when he wouldn't be able to push any further. It wasn't like he could feel each muscle individually, be he knew what was supposed to move together, and what wasn't. He'd had sports injuries, he'd pulled things, he'd gotten muscle cramps - a lot more in the last few weeks than ever - and even bruising. So although he couldn't figure out what had just moved, he did know it oughtn't to be moving independently.

"...You feel that?" he asked, voice low and cautious, as if speaking about it would cause it to happen again.

"Um. Yes."

Yes, she'd definitely felt it, and it was weird. Muscles shouldn't just move like that! And all right, she was one to talk about weird things, with her growing and shrinking muscles, but that wasn't independent movement.

"Did it....hurt?"

"No, it just...felt weird." He tried to concentrate on the feeling to get it to happen again, but nothing happened.

That was a relief, at least. Lord knew Jay didn't need anything new hurting him.

She was kinda afraid to touch it again, in case it happened again. Then again. "Maybe I should do it again, see what happens?"

After only a brief hesitation, she slid her hand across his back again, fingers working at the knot a little bit lighter than before.

Jay waited, then tried relaxing a bit. "Maybe if you moved them up and down, like before?"

Lizzie nodded, and obediently flexed her fingers, then mimicked what she'd been doing earlier as best as she could.

He leaned into her, trying to get the same angle, the same stretch and relaxation. Dropping his chin to her shoulder, he exhaled slowly through his nose. Closing his eyes, he tried to put himself in the same mental state.

Warm Kentucky air. Buzzing insects. Leaves rustling in the breeze. A gently swaying hammock. Lizzie's hair sticking to his every time they turned their heads.

It got easier as he relaxed into her. She closed her eyes, stopped trying to concentrate on working at the muscles exactly as she had been before, and just working at them.

Lizzie let her mind wander, nuzzling her nose into his hair as her fingers worked.

Eventually he relaxed again. Propped up against his sister, comfortably tangled as she rubbed away the soreness in his back. He was beginning to think they'd just both imagined it when something moved. He did his best not to stiffen again, though both hands suddenly clutched Lizzie's shirt. It felt like there was something ALIVE beneath his skin, at home in his muscles, and whatever it was, it liked the attention.

Lizzie had to force herself not to panic. Really, really hard. Because it was moving and it was in there, and oh, Lord, what if it was some kind of parasite or something?

Not helping. Really not helping. Not allowed to panic. She had to not panic for Jay.

She forced herself to keep her hand where it was, though she didn't move it again.

"Still - still not hurting?" she managed.

Jay couldn't seem to breathe. Inhales coming a little quicker, slightly more ragged as the moments dragged on. He pressed his face into his sister's shoulder, letting her scent fill his lungs. It had an instant calming effect, as did the familiar feel of her hair getting caught in his. Hands clutching her arms, he shook his head a bit jerkily.

It didn't hurt. But it wasn't a comforting experience either.

She really needed to not think about all the possibilities of what this could be. Really, really needed to not do that.

Lizzie pulled him close, nuzzling into his own shoulder, hands still on his back. She was kind of too scared to move them at all, even to take them away.

Okay, still not hurting was good. Of course, at this point, she wasn't sure it actually made the situation any better. "Should we tell someone?"

"I-I don't know," he replied. It wasn't as if they could just get it to happen. As far as the twins were aware, it could just as easily be a simple reaction to Lizzie as anything. A lot of twins who manifested had complimentary powers. And those that didn't often proved immune to harm from one another's abilities. Which...was actually really comforting. Jay relaxed a little more at the clearing thought. Whatever it was, Lizzie would either be immune to it, or it would compliment her abilities. Both of which were far, far better options than anything he'd dreamed of to date.

"Guess they're right though." If something was obviously alive in there, well, he was manifesting. Plain, simple and undeniable.

Lizzie didn't know, either. It felt like the thing they should do, go update the staff that something new had happened, but - she kinda didn't want to, at least not yet. She didn't wanna leave him quite yet, wanted to keep on staying snuggled up with him, where it was reassuring. And they hadn't been able to do much 'cept tell him it was normal; they probably wouldn't do much more than that now.

Then she smiled a little. "Guess they are. Least we sort of know what's going on. It never did that before, though, just with me?" She kinda figured, but it was good to double check.

"Just you," he agreed, with a nod. "'Berto sometimes...helps out...and it's never done that before." He did not clarify that 'Berto used his powers. That the heat sunk so deeply into his body it warmed his chest. He did not say that his muscles often relaxed so deeply, he felt like his bones were the only thing keeping them from leaking out his pores. Or that he slept better when 'Berto snuck in with him late at night, curling around him and heating him up until he relaxed enough to pass out. And he sure as hell wasn't going to tell her that sometimes all his blood rushed southways in response neither. That was just something that happened sometimes, and it was embarrassing enough when it did. Weren't no reason to go sharing improper things with his sister who didn't need to know - and likely didn't want to at that.

Jay was so very glad they weren't looking one another in the face. He'd have been hard pressed to meet her eyes at the moment.

Lizzie nodded, though she raised an eyebrow a bit at the pause between "sometimes and "helps out" there. But she didn't pursue it, because she wasn't sure she wanted to know.

Instead, she finally risked moving one hand to card her fingers through his hair again. "Think it's a twin thing or just you gettin' closer to manifesting?"

"Dunno," he sighed. "But if it is, telling 'em ain't gonna help. They're just going to want to do more exams, and they'll haul you in...We ought to just keep it t' ourselves for now." His arms slid back around her in a loose, comfortable hug.

Wasn't like there was anything new about that, them having something just to themselves. Lizzie nodded her agreement. "They likely ain't gonna tell you nothing but that it'll be soon or something." No reason to get poked at and told the same thing again unless it was something serious. And, okay, moving things, but they weren't hurting, and manifesting could be strange.

She snuggled back into him. "I'm still expecting you to let me know when it gets bad."

She relaxed at that. He wouldn't break a promise to her, he just wouldn't. Lizzie sighed, watching her breath ruffle a few strands of his hair, then closed her eyes. "Good," she murmured.
