Mark
Santo's roommate had gone to meet someone and Santo was taking advantage of having the room to himself by opening the door and turning his music up. After all, he figured if one had a playlist full of bouncy upbeat music, one had to share it with the world. Or the dorm, which was the world at the moment.

The only trouble with bouncy upbeat music was that Santo usually wanted to dance to it, and while people forgave the music, his dancing was pretty much unforgivable unless he was outside. Still, when Whip It came on, he couldn't help but tap his toes while he ignored his math homework.

Mark was still getting used to how crazy-huge this place was. He was pretty sure every home he'd ever lived in--and he'd lived in more than his fair share--could fit into one wing of this place. He checked his palm, where he'd inked a map, and was squinting at the blurred lines when he heard the familiar music drifting from an open door.

He looked up, head cocking, grin slowly spreading. Errand forgotten, he drifted toward the doorway and leaned against the frame. "So this is the fabled room of awesome I've heard so much about," he said conversationally.

Santo had been reading a magazine at his desk when he heard Mark at the door and turned around, grinning. You could never go wrong with the a-word.

"Obviously," he told Mark. "Come on in. Embrace the awesome." He gestured around the room, to the wrestling posters over his extra large and sturdy bed, the shelves full of photos from home, the rock collection housed on the shelf over his desk and finally the stereo, finishing up Whip It and switching to Safety Dance.

"I was put on this earth to embrace the awesome." He toed off his shoes, stacking them neatly by the door, and padded into the room. Mark cast a quick look around, curious. "Is that a pet rock?"

Santo laughed, getting up to pick up a couple of the rocks and bring them over.

"Well, they've got names," he admitted. "This one's Shirley, and this one's Trevor, and this one's Lou. Lou got chipped off me last year."

"Seriously?" Mark glanced up at Santo, cocking his head. "Is it rude to ask where from?"

Santo lifted one arm and showed him a slightly odd patch on his elbow.

"I should not climb things," Santo told him as he showed him how the smaller rock fit. "I don't land well, you know? I mean, it doesn't hurt, but I land hard."

His dark brows knit in concern. "Did it hurt?" he asked, reaching up to lightly brush his fingers across the 'wound'. He didn't think before he touched people sometimes--he was too naturally tactile, and sometimes he forgot others weren't the same way.

Santo wasn't really used to people just touching him, but he didn't mind it. Actually, it was kind of nice to have it be a non-issue.

"Nah. Not really. I mean, I knew when it happened. I felt it. But it was like... Clipping your toenails. Just. Bigger."

"Will it grow back? Or will you just be missing that part of yourself, forever?"

"Nah, it's gone," Santo sighed, putting the rocks back on his shelf. "I don't grow the rock. I just hold it together. Least, that's what they tell me."

"Oh." For some reason, that thought was troubling. Mark reached out to brush his fingertips lightly over the broken shard of rock, brows knit together. Then, slowly, he looked up at Santo, expression warming to a soft smile. "I really like your rocks."

Santo grinned at him and plucked one off the shelf again.

"Really? You don't think it's super dorky?" He held one of the rocks out to Mark. "Want one? This one's Shirley. She's limestone."

"You sound like the Rockeater," Mark said with a laugh, taking the rock. He rolled it between his fingers thoughtfully. "Does that make me the guy with the racing snail?"

Santo inspected him a bit. "I liked the guy with the racing snail," he admitted. "He had a cool hat. Better than the bat guy with the hair. Do you have a cool hat?"

"I have many cool hats. No racing snails, though," he added with a faint pout.

"Obviously you need to fix that," Santo told him firmly. "We should start a club! Racing snails! It'd be awesome."

He smiled broadly and tossed the magazine he'd been reading at his bed. "Come on! Let's go find snails!"

"Are you serious?" Mark asked with a laugh. But he didn't hesitate, tossing his stuff on Santo's desk and following eagerly.

Santo grabbed a huge school sweatshirt and pulled it on before grabbing his keys and heading out of his room.

"Totally serious, and if we can't get a club going, we'll still have fun with the snails, right? I mean, how can you go wrong? Snails always equal a fun time."

"Those come later," Santo told him as they headed through the halls. "Cause you need the snails first. Huh. Or maybe not. You know, you can always use a snappy hat."

"You're the strangest, coolest rockeater I've ever met," Mark said, laughing. He slid the rock carefully into his pocket, nearly bounding to keep up with Santo.
