Jared had enjoyed playing some basketball with the other students but always wandered around when meal times popped up. He'd wait until things had died down a little and then he'd strap the zapper to his face and find something to convert to energy for himself. More than likely he'd go with something boring like wheat bread or oatmeal. His body seemed to function best when it was given a lot of carbs. Watching other kids munch down on grub--or worse watch him with his damn bug zapper food converter thing--made him anxious. When Jared was anxious, he got angry. When Jared was angry, he picked fights with people. Random, stupid fights that didn't have any sort of rhyme or reason behind them. It was still way too early for him to be getting into trouble at this school.

"Give it at least a fucking month, Corbo," he muttered to himself as he wandered down the corridor, hands shoved deep into the pockets of his hoodie.

Then he caught site of a face he thought he recognized. "Hey. You're Kitty, right?"

Kitty nodded at his explanation, eyes going slightly wider when he mentioned the whole suffocating people aspect. "Yeah," she agreed, "That does sound like a bad idea."

"Sorry to just jump in with questions about that." She got the distinct feeling that he wasn't really that happy about some aspects of his powers. Subject change time. "How do you like it here so far?"

Jared waved a hand again. He didn't mind subject changes. Subject changes were good when they meant that he didn't have to talk about what a mind and life fuck his powers were. They could be handy sometimes but overall, yeah, a nuisance. Adrian's were so much cooler.

"It's nice. Kinda like the upscale, 2.0 version of Hull House or something. Everybody seems nice. Bobby and I have plans for hockey, and I got the hook up for basketball pick up games. Any dark secrets about the school I should know?"

"He's going to cheat. Just a heads-up. Bobby cheats at hockey." She unscrewed the top on her bottle and took a swig of her milk, then nodded. "Everyone is pretty nice here. Except for the occasional douchebag, but they're easy to pick out. As for dark secrets..."

"We have a few," she glanced around, making sure nobody else was within earshot. "Some underground criminal organizations. A cupcake mafia, but you didn't hear that from me."

"If he cheats, I'll cheat. Then we'll be square again." Somehow, in his mind, that made sense. Jared had no idea if it was actual logic to the rest of the world.

"There are douchebags everywhere." Sometimes it was a title that he managed to earn. "I think the cupcake mafia sounds more interesting but overall less appealing to me than other options."

Then he snapped his fingers as he had remembered something. "Oh. I emailed Lilli. She's bummed that someone has powers like her."

That made Jared laugh. "If I need to start paying them off, things are gonna go to shit pretty fast. The Corbos have practically no money. No land is, like, France or wherever. Guess I'm screwed."

The question about Lilli's powers made him pass a hand through his hair and shake his head. "Not much. Even if someone had explained it to me, it wouldn't have stuck. She could walk through things and make these insubstantial. She wasn't in the lab much so it must've been mostly under control."

"Money isn't everything," she nodded. They accepted payment in many non-monetary forms, but if it never even came up, it wasn't a problem.

"If it wasn't under control, you'd probably know. There would be a whole lot less of this and a whole lot more of this." She sunk down into the floor, making an overly theatrical sad face before popping herself back up. "Unless they just couldn't keep her in the lab."

"Oh. So, like... a barracks type thing?" That was weird. Most schools that she knew of didn't do that with older kids. They had them like that at Xavier's, but only really for the younger ones. Once you hit high school, you got a double.

"Cool. I don't have any siblings, but one of my biffles has like, thirty." Or nine, but she was rounding up. A lot. "Is he powered?"

"Overcrowded, understaffed and colder... that's like, my dream home." She smiled. "Eh... I think I'll stay here. It would be a pain in the ass to move all of my stuff and set up a Habitrail long enough to cross the border for Bo."

"There's someone else here who turns to metal too, but as far as I know, he can't make his hands knives. He just goes big and shiny." She was pretty sure that she would have heard somehow if her Russian lover had the ability to make his knives into hands.

Jared hadn't had all that much to pack up and move. It had mostly been clothes and, well, Adrian. Fortunately Adrian was old enough that he didn't really count as luggage anymore. Although Jared would have carried him if he had to.

"It's not worth all that effort. I mean, Canada in general is nice. I do recommend a trip to Canada, but not Hull House. And certainly not to live."

The news about someone else who could turn to metal did get his attention. "Is it just pieces or all of him?"

	"I'll cross it off my to-do list." Not that she'd really been considering going anywhere for the next few years, at least... even though she had applied to other colleges, she'd probably end up sticking around. "All of him... I think.
