James gave no indication that he noticed Sirius' surprise. Rationalizing it would have been easy enough. Although Sirius was probably the smoothest talker of the marauders, James seemed to be especially gifted at getting his hands on things that were difficult to come by. He should have kept a tighter lip, but he was too tired to trouble himself with it. It wasn't as if he'd be keeping it secret from Sirius, it just wasn't something he wanted to discuss at the moment.
Hunches probably weren't the most reliable form of divination, but James had a long history of trusting his own - and he had a hunch something fierce that if he told Sirius where he was planning to go, Sirius might offer to accompany him. James knew Sirius' mind on last time either of them had seen the house, and he had no interest in pulling Sirius through an outing of torment. Letting his hand travel out of its own accord, James brushed some of Remus' hair out of his face before giving a smile and a nod Sirius. No, especially not right now, not on a day like today.
Unable to stifle a yawn, James promised himself he would take a nap as soon as he got home. However, a shower was definitely in order. Cleaning with magic did the job just fine, but there was something wholly more satisfying about drenching yourself in hot water.
"I'm in dire need of a shower," James informed, keeping his voice especially casual. "And I reckon you could probably use some sleep."
He was quickly rearranging his agenda for the day, hoping Sirius would take the suggestion. Once asleep, the man could sleep through nearly anything. With Sirius out for a few hours, James could leave immediately after his shower and probably be back before anyone else was awake.
