Beacon in the Night
Setting: Three nights after Owen came through The Rift.
Tag: Open to anyone

It was one in the morning and Owen stood against a bar surrounded by a group of women.  (At least, that is how Owen would tell the story later.)  There were two women standing with him.  They were "best friends."  One had stunning green eyes and a blazing head of  red hair.  Her name was Sara.  Her friend was a brunette with all sorts of highlights and low lights in her hair.  She was wearing a pair of blue contacts over her brown eyes and lots of makeup.  Owen had to think she was trying a little to hard to change her appearance.  The woman's name was Deena.

He was busy telling them stories about his adventures in specials ops.  He didn't throw the word Torchwood around but telling them other stories about toting a gun and bringing down the bad guys seemed to be working in his favor.  He wasn't so interested in Deena but Sara he was very keen on.  As the night went on he could see that she was probably just as keen on him.  A smile here.  A wink there.  They were on to a great beginning of a one night stand.

That is when it happened.  A loud beeping started coming from the device tucked away in the inner pocket of his jacket.  He'd attuned his wife's Rift tracker to the Rift in this new world and he was keeping track of its random activity.  He knew that they didn't have the problems here that they'd had in his own world but he wanted to monitor that for himself.  It would always be in the back of his mind that there was a Rift here that could potentially devour Cardiff.  It was a fear of his to have to watch that all over again.

"Sorry, girls.  Duty calls.  We'll have to meet up here again."  He quickly covered his tab in the bar and made his way out into the cold night air.

Owen pulled the device from his coat and started to analyze its readout.  There was a random blip down near the coast line.  It was set back  a ways in the residential area nearby.  He started running through the night.  He didn't draw the gun that had made the trip with him.  He wanted to see what had come through first.  He kept the device out as he ran, zeroing in on where the last blip of activity had shown up.  It was gone by now of course but his hope was that if it had deposited someone or something in this world, he'd be able to catch up with it.

As he rounded the corner onto the street full of dark houses and streetlights he didn't see anything.  A second loud beeping from the device started off.  A new site and more rift activity.  Was this random or was someone manipulating the rift a little?

Owen pulled out his cellphone and attempted to call back to the Hub.  He wanted to make sure someone else was seeing this.  That his machine wasn't on the fritz.  All the time he was keeping his eyes out for whatever came through where he was standing.

Tosh is enjoying a quiet evening in the Hub, re-acquainting herself with the programmes, and updating the out-of-date files. She sips the coffee Ianto had left for her, other hand still flying over the keys.
The phone rings, a resounding chorus of bells from all over the Hub. Setting down her mug, she looks at the ID, but there is no name attached to this number. With a small frown, (it is a classified number, after all), she picks up, answering, "You've reached Torchwood, this is Toshiko."

"Tosh? I'm glad its you." He turned sharply trying to look for the person or creature that came through the rift in his location. "Please tell me you are following this rift activity!"

"Owen?" She couldn't hide her surprise. She slid her chair over to the Rift Monitor Station. "No alarms have gone off, and the computers haven't picked anything up. Where are you? Are you sure it isn't just-" Numbers scrolled across the screen, followed by a map.
"My God, your right. Two hits, within minutes of each other." She pulled up details. "Moving in a liner pattern down Bute Crescent." Her eyes widened. "Owen, I think it's coming towards the Hub."

That is when it called out. Whatever it was caused a shrieking sound that almost could pierce the eardrums. Owen spun around just in time to be knocked down on his back. He didn't get to see what it was but it was powerful. Strong. His hands shout out onto the pavement scrambling around for the cell phone and his wife's version of a rift monitor.

His hand grabbed up the cell phone first. "Tosh? I don't think its just one!" His stray hand nabbed up the rift monitor and pocketed it. Toshiko would be monitoring it now. Owen pulled his Torchwood Four issue gun and pointed it down, ready for anything.

"I think there are several things heading for Cardiff."

Two more blips pick up even as he says it. She quickly switches the call to speaker, trying to route trajectory on the screen. "Owen, tell me where you are. I can call Jack, send him to meet you." More activity is showing on the screen, closer and closer to the Millennium Center. "Or I can come find you. You shouldn't be alone, not when we don't know what we're dealing with."

Owen heard the shriek again and it was farther away. "This thing moves fast." He wasn't saying it to Toshiko so much as he was remarking it to himself.

"Do you have my location? We can meet up halfway..." He didn't want her running through the night by herself with whatever it was out there. She wasn't his wife. She wasn't anyone he had a responsibility towards. It didn't matter.

He started to head back towards The Hub on foot. He kept his eye out for anything that looked otherworldly. Every once in awhile he'd hear a shriek in the night. Usually far off but sometimes closer.

"I'm on my way." She says, sending his location to her cell-phone. As she rounds up her equipment, the green dot that represents him moves closer to the Hub. At the same time, a Rift spike occurs, too close to Owen for her comfort.
"Owen, be careful. Whatever is coming is getting close to you." She quickly scribbles a note to leave for Ianto in the tourist office. "I'm leaving the Hub now."

"Okay." He wished that he'd had a Torchwood issued headset on him, but his cellphone would have to do for now. "I'll keep my phone on until you get here." He figured it would be the best way to track him.

Almost exactly in the same moment Toshiko started to warn him about another creature dropped out of thin air in front of him. It was down the hill on the road he was using to get back to the Millennium Center or as close to it as he could when he met Toshiko.

It was tall and humanoid but completely devoid of eyes or nose. It looked like something had pulled a large flap of yellowing skin over its face except for the mouth. The mouth is what was creating that horrible shrieking sound. The skin wrapped around to the back of its head and down its neck.

Its hands seemed to work rather well for the talons that appeared on the end of each finger. What gave Owen the creeps was that the thing was actually floating above the road. Its dinosaur-like feet... or were they considered just toes?... were tipped in the same talon like tips. Its body was wrapped in a thin layer of shredded black and gray material, looking almost like clothing but too randomly placed to make sense for fashion or protection of the body.

"What a tall sack of awful..." Owen immediately ducked behind a silver car parked on the road and just studied the creature.

The Rift Monitor is going crazy as she nears Owen's position, and she wishes she'd brought a gun. Not knowing what she was running towards is making her nervous.
She hears the creature moments before she sees it, and her blood goes cold in her veins. The awful shrieking makes her wince, her head starting to ache almost instantly. Then she sees the tall, otherworldly figure standing in the road, and knows instinctively that this is the thing causing all the trouble. She doesn't see Owen, but knows he must be near by. The question is, how to find him without this creature finding her.

The thing screamed out again and then started moving in Owen's direction. It didn't seem to be moving for the purpose of getting to Owen though. Owen slid around the far side of the car from the creature as it floated past.

Then the thing picked up speed and was gone in a split second. These things were fast. Owen stood up from where he was and started to look around. Toshiko was supposed to be coming. He finally braved his cellphone again. "Toshiko? Are you here?"

"I'm here. Owen." She hurries forward, now the creature is gone, though she looks around cautiously, knowing full well it could come back at any moment. "I'm pretty sure I just saw what's causing all the Rift activity."
She sees movement ahead of her, but it's human gestures.
"I think I see you."

Owen stood up and looked around for her. "Where are you at?" He kept his gun pointed down and walked out into the street.

Whatever these things were he wasn't ready to put the gun away yet.

"Ah, there you are." He headed in her direction. "Does anyone else know that these things are here?"

"I don't think so." She hangs up her phone and puts it in her pocket, looking him over carefully, but so far, it doesn't look like he's been injured.
"I left notes for Jack and Ianto at the Hub, but with everything that's been happening, I don't know if they'll find them in time." She glances at the gun he holds, then back to him.
"How many do you think there are?"

"I'm not sure. Had to put my rift monitor away to pull out the gun. From the ones I saw light up, the one I just saw and the few you mentioned to me... Less than ten?"

Having seen them though that wasn't exactly a comforting thought. They hadn't seen what these creatures actually were doing here or would do after being deposited here against there will.

"I don't think that this is going to end well."

Tosh looks at her own rift monitor. "Nothing's showing right now... is it possible they can teleport? That one was here, and gone again so quickly."
She looks at him, wide-eyed. "Do you think they know we're tracking them?"
Something about the way he says that last statement sends a chill up her spine, and reminds her again: She has heard this man - a version of this man, anyway - die, and he has more than likely seen his version of her die, too.
She makes up her mind that she's not letting that happen again.

Owen never quite looked at Tosh during their conversation. His eyes would meet hers but then they would quickly glance away looking for more of those creatures. "Teleport no, but I'm guessing they can fly... Smart. Maybe. Seem to communicate by their high-pitched shrieks?"

He was mostly just listing everything his eyes had seen and his ears had heard. "I don't like the look of them though. Back up might be important"

"They didn't have eyes..."
