Ugh. Of course he would say he'd done well for himself. And, honestly, he probably had. He'd only completely shattered Rhi's heart and ruined the life she'd wanted for herself. See, she had it in her head? That Nate was the one for her. She loved him. And...now it meant nothing. He barely even talked to her. But that was no big deal, right? Clearly!
...things changed. Did he really think for a second that they wouldn't? That he could keep this from her forever and have her trail along after him like a lovesick puppy while he was in love with her best friend all along? He had always been on her good side. Always. And, unless he deserved it? When it came down to it, she'd still stand up for him. She just...couldn't deal with it for a while. She couldn't look at him knowing he'd always wanted someone more than he wanted her when she only had eyes for him. She couldn't watch him with Leney. At least...not for a while. As of right now, she was pretty okay with things. But for all she knew, he wanted nothing to do with her.
And of course? He would be home. He'd be the one to answer the door. And Holly wouldn't be there. That was precisely how her luck would go. Fucking hell. She wasn't even remotely in the mood for this. But you had to deal with what life threw at you, right? And Rhi was never one to let things catch her off guard. Or...she pretended she wasn't and people who didn't know her well believed it. See, as far as most of the world knew? Her life was exactly as she wanted it. They didn't see the emotionally abusive mother who walked out on Rhi and her father. They didn't see how broken she was over Nate. They didn't see the eating disorder, the poor self image. They saw what she wanted them to see: a well adjusted, albeit slightly temperamental woman in complete control of her life. There were a few who got to see the other side of her. Nate was one of them, once. But somehow Rhi got the feeling he didn't care anymore.
...and that proved it. "Oh, Nathaniel, I always look good." She knew what he was getting at. She wasn't an idiot. But... "Maybe if you crawled out of your hole once in a while, you would have noticed sooner," she said, not even bothering to suppress a roll of her eyes. "Do you know when she'll be back?"
