Teachers
It was a rather sunny Saturday as the teachers were relaxing in the staff room. The monthly meeting had ended less than an hour ago and most had chose to remain here and socialise. It wasn't very often that they got a break from the students. Most of the time there were detentions to oversee, lessons to prepare or other thing to take care of. However, things had been quite calm in the last week to the relief of everybody. Well, there were worries about this being the calm before the storm, but for now it was a moment to rest.
Pomono Sprout, Poppy Pomfrey and Rolanda Hooch were busy setting up a card game, while Albus was busy listening to Hagrid talk about the beasts he was planning to get for his classes. Remus Lupin and Severus Snape were sitting in reading chairs, reading books, as far away from each other as was possible with a handful of chairs available. Severus had made sure to have as much distance to the other man as possible. The last teachers still in the room where Minerva McGonagall and Filius Flitwick who were discussing students and they're current progress.
"For all the time Potter spends in the library, one would think that he'd prove more intelligent in class. But I guess this just proves that fame doesn't stop one from being stupider than stupid," admonished Severus, interrupting Minerva and Filius as their conversation turned to Harry Potter and his performance that couldn't quite reach that of his parents in school.
Filius shook his head, "I don't think he's stupid, but I sometimes feel as if he wasn't applying himself. I can see that he knows or wants to know something, but he's holding back as if he's afraid to know."
"I get that feeling more and more. Not so long ago, I held him back after he had handed him a sub par essay on a topic I knew that I understood. It was as if he felt guilty about not doing as well as he could have, but there was this resignation about it," supplied Minerva.
Severus shrugged, "Well, maybe he was just embarrassed that his horrendous essay writing skills got even worse. I'd call it a wonder if he was able to read his own notes. How one is incapable of writing an essay readable after two years I don't know. I had certainly learned how to do that before I went to Hogwarts."
The at the muggle school I attended was left out, but it needn't be said. Both Filius and Minerva knew that Severus' father had not only been a muggle, but had also been anything but a good parent. A combination which made him hide his own heritage as much as possible without outright lying about it.
"Maybe it's the quill? I usually trust those that already know how to write with a quill to help the other's along, but I dare say that it might not be the most important thing for Mister Weasley and Miss Granger might not realise that help is needed," thought Minerva out loud.
Severus snorted, "Right, as if Miss Granger wouldn't know something. She thinks she knows everything and has to make sure that everybody knows."
"I do believe that showing your intellect is a good thing and Miss Granger has mellowed down. Surely, Misters Potter and Weasley helped her relax in that regard," pointed Filius out.
Minerva nodded, "Still, it doesn't hide the fact that Mister Potter seemingly spends a lot of time in the library, but that this studious behaviour doesn't show in his performance."
"He's able to produce mist for the Patronus Charm and he's advancing faster than I would have thought possible," remarked Remus Luping after having listened in to the conversation so far.
Now Severus was surprised, "You're teaching him the Patronus Charm?"
"He asked to learn after what happened at the Quidditch Game," explained Remus, "It does help that his Bogart turns into a Dementor. Although, I think that's keeping him back as well. It's… he says he hears a woman scream and he figured that it must be his mother dying."
"No wonder he passed out. That is not a memory you want to remember, especially if it's the only one you might ever remember," responded Minerva. Severus didn't say anything at all.
After a while, Filius broke the silence, "It stands to point that Mister Potter apparently works harder than his class performance and essay quality shows. Why is that or if he's not working on school topics, what else would occupy him to that degree?"
"Maybe we should keep a closer eye on him," remarked Severus, "It is certainly an intriguing question."
"I'm surprised that your first suggestion isn't pranks," remarked Minerva.
Severus frowned, "He might be as arrogant and prone to rule breaking as his father, but even I can see that his rule breaking doesn't tend to involve pranking."
"Shall we meet again next week to discuss what we have discovered?" asked Filius after a moment of silence. After everybody nodded, they returned to their previous tasks.
