Sometimes it's best to pick everything up
Who: Josh and Mouse
Where: At the motel
When: Saturday Morning, after 10 am
What: Hungover, and a heart to heart, and a bad plan
Warning: Language, it is Josh we're talking about
Josh woke up slowly, his head pounding from the fact that he had drank entirely too much in his outing with his brother Max, and a little groan escaped him as he tried to push away the cobwebs of sleep. He pulled the body that was next to him a little closer before he realized what he was doing. He had to blink a couple of times to get rid of the blurry sight of sleep, noticing that he was in a state of undress, though not completely and then was wondering on just what he had done while he was inebriated. Pushing some of the hair away from the girl’s face, he was at least somewhat thankful that it was Mouse in his bed and not some random girl he might have hooked up with. That would have been bad. He slipped out of the bed, trying to keep his footing, as even though he had a killer hangover he was still feeling the effects of the alcohol that lingered in his system. He needed a good dose of aspirin, and some water to get rid of the dry feeling in his mouth. After that was taken care of, he moved to sit back on the bed, placing a pillow over his lap so the morning wood that he had wasn’t out in sight, even if he was wearing boxers. “You awake?” he asked quietly to not disturb her too much if Mouse was in fact sleeping. But after he had that conversation with Max, he knew he needed to have one with Mouse as well.
Mouse had slept the night away in Josh's arms at Max's insistence. She had wanted to anyway. When he pulled her closer she began to stir, though not quite waking. She didn't like when he got out of the bed and she began to wake up more. Finally she opened her eyes as he sat back down and let out a yawn. "Yes, I'm awake." she said, sitting up a bit and rubbing her eyes, blinking as she groped on the night stand for her glasses to bring the world into focus.
He watched her, and ended up reaching forward and getting the glasses for her and putting them to her hand so she wouldn’t be searching for ages. Letting out a breath, he closed his eyes for a moment, trying to ignore the pain in his head. “Look, I need to apologize first, I’ve been a complete dick to you. And it isn’t your fault.” he started and then cleared his throat, as he was still sort of waking up himself. “I just don’t know how to do .. this. This thing that’s forming between us. As cold hearted as it is, I’m used to fucking and leaving.” he told her. Not even sure if the words were coming out right. Just hopefully the god-awful pounding in his head would go away soon.
Mouse thanked him as he handed her her glasses and listened to his apology. She could tell his head was hurting him and he wasn't quite awake yet. She gave him a small smile. "Josh, it's ok." she said, reaching over and taking his hand. "Obviously I'm not much better as I have no memory of liking anyone before. All I know is that I'm not gonna let you push me away or leave.” The conversation with Max had given her new confidence and she was going to make sure Josh knew it. "But you have a headache so why don't you lay back down, hmmm?"
A soft sigh escaped the man as he looked at Mouse as she was speaking. Leave it to Max to get to her while he was passed out. He’d have to remember to smack his brother around a little in a training session just to make up for it. “I’m not trying to push you away, or leave. If I was going to leave, I would have fucking left already.” he said, his voice coming out just a little harsher than he meant for it to. Then he groaned, and pinched the bridge of his nose for a moment. “Sorry again, not angry at you. Just a certain brother of mine needs to learn to keep his nose out of other’s business.” he commented before looking at her again. “The headache will go away soon, took something for it, but laying down makes it feel worse. Once it goes, we’ll lay back down, alright?”
Mouse winced a bit when he snapped at her and then she sighed as he apologized again. "Max is just worried about you, and so am I." she said, her brow furrowing as she reached up and very gently stroked his cheek. "You're scaring me a little, going out all the time and coming home drunk. It's not....It's not you."
He gave her a look, as if she had said something almost idiotic, “And how, Mouse, would you know what is me, or not?” He asked, his words not coming out harsh, but more soft as if he couldn’t believe that she knew anything about him really. Even if she had been living with them for two weeks already. “Max worries about everything, it’s how Max is. Even if the worry is completely unwarranted. And unneeded.” his eyes closed a little because he did like the feeling of her hand on his cheek, and it was nearly damn soothing. There was a slightly long pause before he sighed again, “Between fucking things over constantly with you, and that whole .. vampire business, I needed to get out and forget things for a bit Mouse.”
It seemed no matter how hard she tried, he just kept being a total ass. She couldn't get through to him and it was driving her a little insane. "I know someone as controlled and dedicated as you wouldn't put himself in a position to get killed because he's being drunk and stupid." she said with a scowl. "Stop making excuses. If things were so fucked up with me, I wouldn't be in this bed with you, trying to get you to realize that all I want to do is love you!" she said in a raised voice, losing her temper.
His eyes closed as she basically slapped him with her words. And he deserved it, he knew that he deserved it and that was the problem. And when he opened his mouth to speak, his words came out calm, as if he was trying so hard to control the temper that was flaring up. “I wasn’t out hunting, so I wouldn’t have gotten killed. The slaughtering of the family that has been all over the news, by a vampire, hit too close to home. Our parents were murdered by the fucking bloodsuckers, so forgive me if I needed to forget myself for a few days.” He let out a breath, and then opened his eyes finally to look at her again. He didn’t know what to say to her little admission, and his face showed the emotion that he felt the beginnings of the same thing, even if he wouldn’t admit it to himself yet.
Mouse bit her lip when he explained part of the reason why he'd been off on a bender. She hadn't known that about his family, but now she understood better why he had taken her in. She had been a victim of vampires, just like his family. "I'm sorry." she said softly, looking away from him, ashamed at herself for yelling at him.
Well, this was an awkward moment that he hadn’t been expecting or planning for. He rubbed his face for a second with his hands before he reached out and gently tried to pull her closer to him. He needed the feeling of another person at the moment, of her. “It isn’t your fault, no need to be sorry for something that happened years ago. And you’re right, normally I wouldn’t be going out and getting shitfaced drunk. I just .. have a lot of tough calls to make soon.” he tried to explain, not knowing if she’d understand or not. Who knew how much his brother opened his mouth about?
She bit her lip as he went to pull her close and she let him, slipping her arms around his waist and snuggling against his. Why was everything so complicated? "I might not understand everything or know very much but...I'm here for you, no matter what." She didn't know what else to do. She loved him, there was no way around it. So she would be there, waiting in the wings.
“I know, and I think that’s what scares me most about you Mouse, you’re so damn .. I don’t know.” he groaned because he didn’t know how to say what he was thinking, or find the right words for it. “You have this whole life out there that you don’t even know about. It probably wont be the my leaving you that should be the worry here.” he told her, his arms wrapping around her small frame easily.
Mouse looked up at him, her eyes sad. "Josh...even if I find out who I used to be...this is my life now. We don't know if I'll ever remember anything or if we'll ever find out who I was. But I'm Mouse now. And I'm not going anywhere."
“We’ll figure out something, Mouse, there has to be a way to get your memories back. You’re already starting to remember little things, remember at the mall?” he asked her, this was a much safer topic, or so he thought. At least this way he wouldn’t be spilling everything to her. Which maybe he should have done from the beginning instead of telling Max anything, who now thought he was a crazy person. Hell, maybe if he did have that talk with his family and they all opted to not hunt anymore, he could teach Mouse, and they could be a team. It was worth a passing thought. Even if he doubted she had the strength in her to handle something like that.
"Even if there isn't, it's ok." she said, looking up at him. "I like being Mouse." She couldn't bring herself to care much about her life before this as she couldn't remember it anyway, but even if she could, she wouldn't trade what she had now for it. It was crazy and hard, but she liked being with Josh and being friends with Max. She never would of met them if she hadn't had her memory wiped. Everything happened for a reason. "I like being here with you."
Josh sighed a little, but ended up pulling Mouse closer to him, to where the girl was on his lap. Well, on the pillow on his lap. He didn’t know what to say in that moment, as words tended to fail him in most situations. Well any situations that had involved Mouse anyway, so he was thinking it best he just shut up for the time being. Pressing a little kiss to the top of her head. “Mouse, if I leave here .. without my siblings, would you come with me? I know that you’ve grown to like Max, but ..” he shut himself up again. At least he had forced himself to ask the question, rather than give the explanation. That was the important part of it.
Mouse happily curled up in his hold, smiling softly as he kissed the top of her head. She looked up at him as he asked if she would come with him if she left and she reached up, gently stroking his cheek. "Josh...I'll always come with you, no matter where you go." she murmured softly before leaning up to press a gentle kiss to his lips.
He kissed her back, softly and almost as if he wasn’t sure of himself while he was doing it. But it wasn’t because of her, not this time. It was more because when he pulled back from the kiss, he was looking at her. “We’re going to cut out for a couple of days, just me and you. How does that sound? No distractions, no siblings, no drinking. I need some time to think about some things, and I want you with me. How does that sound?” he asked her, before pressing another soft kiss to her lips.
She absolutely loved the idea of the pair of them going off for a bit. He needed the peace and the fact he wanted her with him made her heart soar. She smiled as he kissed her again, her own lips moving over his and reluctantly pulling back so she could answer, through her lips stayed mere centimeters from his. "It sounds perfect." she murmured before kissing him again.
He smiled a little then, when she agreed and then gave him another kiss. Then he sighed as he pulled back, as he found he really didn’t want to stop kissing her. “Then I need you to grab a few pairs of clothes for each of us, and put them in a bag while I get other things together, can you do that for me, baby?” he asked her, surprising himself with the little term of endearment.
Mouse didn't really want to stop kissing either, but alas. She beamed when he called her baby and kissed him again. "Sure." she said. "But you'd have to let me go for me to do that." she said wih a giggle as she was still wrapped up in his arms.
He reluctantly uncurled his arms from around her, that way she could get up easily enough. And after she slid off of his lap, he was moving off of the bed so he could get dressed. He had no idea on where he would take her yet, but he figured he could think about that after they were on their way. He wanted to cut out before any of his siblings caught wind that he was leaving, with Mouse. Even though he knew he’d come back, he’d have to. But at the moment, he just needed to get away. Watching Mouse for a moment, he took a breath, then he was moving about the motel room to gather up the bag of his weapons and such, as he’d never leave unprepared for anything.
While he was worried about weapons, she took care of the clothing, packing a bag in record time before she worked on getting dressed herself. She didn't know where they were going so she wasn't sure what she would wear, which had her wandering about in her underwear digging through the dresser.
That was a sight to behold, even in his gathering of things to take with them, the fact that she was just in her underwear. He had to clear his throat and force himself to keep packing things up. Probably more than what would have been needed for just a couple of days, but the man had a lot of weapons whereas he had very little else. “You about ready? Bring something warm just in case it gets a bit chilly out.” he told her, before he took his cellphone out of his pocket, looked at it, then at Mouse. Tossing the phone onto the bed when the girl wasn’t looking, he heaved the bag onto his shoulder. “What do you say to a little bed and breakfast just on the outskirts of town?” he asked when the idea hit him. “And there should be some people there in case I have to go out for some business to take care of, which never takes long, and then I’d be back with you.”
Mouse had managed to get herself into a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. She shoved her boots on and grabbed her coat as he hefted up his bag. "Yea, all set." she said as she buttoned up her coat and picked up the bag which held their clothes and toiletries. "A bed and breakfast sounds perfect." she said, smiling at him. She didn't notice him toss the phone onto the bed. She was much too excited.
He smiled as he watched her face basically light up when he mentioned the bed and breakfast. Hell, it even sounded good to him, maybe he could get them a room with a fireplace in it. Little things like that which he had seen on the television watching some of those shows that Max tended to watch. He gave a soft laugh at the irony of what he was doing, but then held out his free hand to her. “Let’s hit the road, and maybe we’ll get there when they have lunch all prepared. Should be maybe an hour or so drive.”
She smiled as he held out his hand to her and slipped her hand into his. "Ok. That sounds good." she said as she laced their fingers together and stood up on her tiptoes to press her lips to his. She was really excited for their little impromptu getaway and couldn't wait to spend time alone with Josh like a real couple.
That was one of the things that he really liked about Mouse, she was so willing to agree with nearly anything that he could come up with. And she wasn’t even thinking on how this might make his siblings feel, them just leaving without a word, as if Josh did it all the time or something. “When we get there, I want you to figure out what you want us to do first. I’ll be all yours until evening, then I’ll spend a little time to canvas the area, make sure that we’ll be totally safe there.” he told her, while he was leading them out of the motel room, to take her to his car. Thankfully, the headache had mostly subsided, otherwise driving would be a little difficult.
