who: Joshua and Mouse
what: Self Defense Training
when: Monday Afternoon
where: Woods Outside of Toronto
warnings: some shooting, fighting, and a mistake of a kiss.
Mouse eyed the cans set up for her on a broken down fence surrounding a broken down barn. Joshua was teaching her how to shoot. He could hit every can dead on, which he had demonstrated before setting them back up and handing her a gun. The metal weapon was awkward in her hands and she was a little nervous. "You sure there's no one around I can actually shoot?" She was in new clothes that he had bought her, a pair of flared jeans and a black baby doll t-shirt. She looked the part, but she really had no idea what she was doing.
Joshua looked over at her, holding the weapon now like she didn’t know what to do with it. But then again, she didn’t, so he couldn’t fault her for that. He moved to go behind her, his arms circling around her. “First you need to hold it properly.” he let his hands move down her arms to where he could help in bringing them up, to she was holding the gun in the right way. “There is no one here by me and you.” he tried to reassure her, his mouth rather close to her ear now. “You’ll slip the safety off, and put your finger near the trigger. Then I want you to breathe, concentrate on nothing else but your breathing. Then line up the shot, and on an exhale pull the trigger.”
Mouse's heart began to pound as Joshua came up behind her and encircled her in his arms. Sure, he was trying to show her how to shoot, but his hands sliding down her arms and his voice murmuring in her ear had her thinking about other things aside from shooting a gun. She followed his instructions, breathing eavenly. Her entire body relaxed then she shot. One of the cans went flying with a clang and she gasped. "Oh my god, I did it!" she said, turning her head to look up at him, beaming.
While she was trying to breath before shooting, Joshua couldn’t help but being able to smell the shampoo on the girl’s hair. When he heard the bullet hitting the can, he cleared his throat, trying to shake the thoughts that he was having from being in a close proximity to her. He drew in a breath and stepped away from her, his brows furrowed just slightly. For the most part, he was in teacher mode, so there wasn’t any of the ‘hooray’ going on from him. “Do it again.” he instructed, this time wanting to watch her, wondering vaguely on if it was sheer dumb luck she had hit the can on her first go. But Josh didn’t believe in luck much.
Mouse nodded as he told her to do it again. She had a feel for it now. Like when she played violin. She breathed slowly, raising the gun. She gently pulled the trigger and another can went off the fence with a clang. She then in turn took out each of the cans, a look of concentration on her face. When the last can went flying she put the safety on the gun and lowered it. "So, that's good right?"
A brow raised as he watched her, a low breath sounding from him when she was finished shooting all the cans. He’d ask her where she learned to shoot, but she wouldn’t remember, he knew that. Now he didn’t know what to make of the girl, not at all. She could play music, shoot, and who knew what other talents she might have locked away. “Yea, that’s good. Safe to say this isn’t the first time you’ve handled a gun of some sorts before.” he spoke while holding his hand out for her to hand him the gun. “Feel up to some hand to hand?”
Mouse handed the gun over to him, wondering what her life had been life if she could both play violin and shoot a gun. "Hand to hand? Sure." she said, pulling the pony tail holder off of her wrist and pulling her hair back in a messy bun.
He watched her, trying to push aside the attraction that he had for her, though not even wanting to believe it at this point himself. He moved himself to where he was facing her then. “Alright, I’m going to act, and you’re going to react. When in a real fight, you wont have warning, so we need to prepare you for that.” He explained while he was putting the gun down. Then he moved to her, as if he was about to attack her. All the while thinking that he hoped that she would react, and not just stand there. He could take a hit and he knew it.
While Joshua warned her he was coming at her, she still wasn't expecting it. Instead of attacking she back peddled, tripping over her own feet. Mouse went down on her ass, wincing from the impact. But she rolled away and scrambled back up, looking for another attack.
When he ended up taking her down with him, he very briefly felt a pang of guilt, wondering on if he had hurt her. He shook the thought before rolling in the other direction that she had. Getting up swiftly enough, he moved to where he was then behind her, his arm going to move around her neck and shoulders, while the other went around her waist. He wasn’t holding hard enough to cause any pain, but he wondering on if she would react correctly of if he would have to give more incentive.
Mouse wasn't expecting to get attacked from behind. When he grabbed her she grabbed the arm he had around her neck, pulling as hard as she could, which wasn't very hard and kicked her feet. She was trying not to hurt him, but her foot connected with his knee.
When he felt the pain in his knee, he actually smiled, even though it hurt like hell. And it caused him to stumble just a bit. He didn’t let go of her though, even though he was nursing the one leg. “Good Mouse, now with all your weight push back, cause me to fall.” He instructed, he wouldn’t resist against it, how else would she learn unless he gave some guidance along the way?
"Ok." she said in a strained voice. She was afraid to hurt him, but there was something about the firmness of his teaching voice that made her have to comply. With a groan of exertion she shoved back as hard as she could.
When he landed on his back with an ‘oomph’, he just stayed there for a moment, still holding onto her. “When someone grabs you from behind, they expect you to struggle, to try and pull away. To do what you can to get away. They don’t usually expect you to fall back into them, even without kicking the move of falling back can be useful. Now would be the time to use your feet, your elbows, you take control.” he told her, before he let his arms fall so she could get up if she wanted. “You got a kick on you though.” he chuckled, a little winded, and finding his knee was still aching.
Mouse listened to his words, committing them to memory. She found she could remember things very easily and in detail. Probably because her memory wasn't very long at this point. When his arms fell away instead of rolling off of him she moved quickly, straddling him and pinning his wrists with a grin. "Ha, I win!" she said.
He hadn’t been prepared for her to straddle or pin him. But he couldn’t help the little bit of a smirk that curled on his lips when she did. “Oh?” he mused, before using his body to roll, taking her with him, to where he was then over her, “One thing you don’t have going for you, you don’t have the weight to keep an opponent down.” he teased, the mood of the training session taking a more playful type of air now.
A squeal sounded from her as he rolled over, pinning her under him. Her breath caught for a moment and it clicked in her head just how gorgeous he was. His teasing words made her giggle and a blush bloomed on her cheeks. "So is it better for me to try and run to you so you can protect me?" she asked with a grin.
The squeal that she gave caused him to give her a little bit of a funny look, immediately thinking that he might have hurt her in the process, though the giggle that she sounded quickly swept that thought away. The blush wasn’t lost on him, and the smirk stayed on his lips. “It’s better for you to outsmart them, to use your brains if you’re unable to use your strength.” he instructed, the smirk almost faltering to a frown. “I might not always be there.”
A frown came to Mouse's face and her brow furrowed. Since meeting Joshua, he had become the center of her world. She couldn't imagine him not being in her life. He gave her purpose. Without him showing her the world, she wouldn't be apart of it, just drifting with no identity. "I'll learn how to outsmart." she said with a nod. The playfulness was fading, but Mouse didn't want it to yet. She twisted out of his grip and quickly wiggled out from under him, getting to her feet and taking off. The messy bun fell out, leaving her hair to fly behind her as she ran rather quickly, turning back to look at him with a grin as she dashed for the barn.
When he saw her frown, he wanted to bring a hand up to let a thumb rub at her cheek, to try and soothe her, but he didn’t. He didn’t know why the action never happened, only that he kept himself from giving in. A brow arched when he lost his grip on her, and she was no longer beneath him. His eyes followed her as she ran, hoisting himself up, and trying to test out how much weight his knee would hold at the moment. When he figured out that he could carry himself just with a little pain still, he chased after her, trying to figure out on what she was trying to do.
Mouse went into the barn, looking around. She saw a stall and dashed into it, crouching down and being as quiet as she could. She was planning on ambushing him, trying to outsmart him like he had suggested. She waited, a small hole in the side of the stall serving as a peekhole.
Joshua reached the barn and was looking around for Mouse, his brows knitting together just a bit when he couldn’t see her right off. “Mouse?” he called, his brain not registering at first that she was trying to outsmart him, he was still thinking about how she looked with that frown, and how she sounded when she giggled. “Aren’t we a tad bit old for hide and seek? Or at least I am.” he mumbled.
She watched him as he came in, taking in all of the surroundings. There was a pile of hay on the other side of him. When he was in just the right spot she moved. Mouse dashed at him, intent on tackling him into the hay.
If his thoughts hadn’t been on her, and he hadn’t been distracted, he would have heard her moving. He would have been able to move out of the way, but considering that his thoughts were elsewhere, he let out a whoosh of air when he was tackled, and it took him more than a moment to figure out what was poking him. “You learn fast.” he finally chuckled out after a moment, his hand coming up to pick a piece of hay out of her hair.
Mouse giggled as they landed in the hay, surprised she had managed to sneak up on him as she did. She didn't know he had been distracted by other thoughts, much less thoughts of her. "I have an excellent teacher." she said, smiling at him, a blush once more on her cheeks and he pulled the hay from her hair.
“That’s a first.” he chuckled at her words, “But thank you for thinking that.” He shook his head. Then he was looking at her again, his thumb moving to brush lightly at the blush that was on her cheeks. He was starting to feel like a hypocrite, after having always lectured about not forming attachments to people, and here he was feeling himself starting to get attached. And with someone he knew nothing about. It was almost laughable, though he wasn’t laughing, not anymore. Instead he was just looking at her, trying to see if he could figure out any answers.
When his thumb brushed her cheek a shiver went down her spine. It was such a small touch, but it had her heart racing. Just minutes before he had had her pinned underneath him, but that touch was the one that sent her into fits. Joshua was looking at her so intensely it was as if he was trying to peer into her very soul. She was trapped in his gave, looking at him, eyes full of questions and longing.
He was the first to look away, clearing his throat all over again. He had the feeling that this girl would be the death of him, either by the hands of his siblings if he let into the attraction he felt for her, or out on a hunt when his thoughts weren’t focused because he was still trying to figure whatever this was out. “After we wrap up here, what would you like to do?” he asked her, temporarily forgetting that she might have no idea.
Mouse looked down when he looked away, her own mind trying to figure out what was going on between them. As she had no memories of any kind of relationship experience, this was all very confusing to her. His question also caught her at a loss. "Ummmm, watch a movie?" she suggested.
A movie was a good idea, it seemed like a safe idea. Maybe, if he was able to keep a bit of distance between them. Which could be difficult considering he didn’t want to get out of the hay pile. “Any idea on what you might be in the mood for?” he asked, his eyes moving back to look at her while a hand came up to tuck some of that unruly hair of hers away from her face.
Since he didn't make a move to get up, neither did she. And he kept touching her in little ways that made her swoon. "Not really...We can watching something you like, maybe I'll like it." she said, her voice soft.
“We’ll see whats on whenever we get back.” he offered, figuring something might catch both their interests. Though her comment on the fact that maybe she’ll like it, it caused him to frown again, and remember why they were here in the first place. With a little sigh, he put his finger beneath her chin, to guide her face up a little, then he pressed his lips to hers, only for a moment. And then he laid back in the hay, no longer even really touching her like he had been before.
Of all the things he could of dine, kissing her was something she never expected. She didn't even have the time to kiss him back. She was so shocked he had done it, Mouse stared like a deer in headlights. It took several moments for her to even blink and when she did she looked at him, wondering why he had kissed her at all. "Joshua?" she whispered, his name alone filled with questions as she reached out and with a feather light touch, pressed her fingers to his stubbled cheek.
He didn’t look at her for a minute or two, even after she spoke his name. He couldn’t bring himself to. And when he started to speak, he still couldn’t look at her. “I needed to know if my attraction for you was real. And I have my answer. But Mouse, that wont be happening again.” he started, finally looking over at her now. His jaw clenched for a moment as if he was having difficulty figuring out his words. “Not until you figure out more on who you are. I have no idea on if you’d be interested, if your single, married … I don’t even know your name.” he shook his head, sighing, before looking away again, dropping the subject. Joshua was a stubborn man, and once he made up his mind, it was difficult to change it.
Mouse stared at him, trying to process his words. She went through several emotions, first shock, than hurt, which showed on her face when she felt he implied he didn't like her. Then when he started making what she felt were excuses, she grew angry. "That was not fair." she said in a small voice, when she really wanted to yell at him for making her feel this way. Instead, she got up and stormed out of the barn with every intention of walking back to the hotel, which was pretty far away from where they were, packing her things and leaving. She had no where to go, but she was so upset she couldn't think straight. Mouse didn't even notice the tears on her cheeks.
Joshua thought on just letting her go, to blow off whatever steam she was feeling, but while he was trying to reason with himself, he was already moving to follow her. When he saw her, he sprinted to catch up with her, to grab her wrist. “You’re right, it wasn’t fair.” he breathed out. “But I can’t take advantage of you like that. It’s bad enough that you’re making me attached when if things go sour here in the city, I’ll leave, with my siblings. That’s who I am. I’m a killer. I’m a bastard who will probably make you cry.”
Mouse turned to look at him when he grabbed her wrist. There were tears on her cheeks and her nose was red. She listened to his words and the anger drained away. Now she was just hurt. "Joshua..." She didn't really know what to say. "I....I don't know what to do...You're the only person I have. I don't care if you're a killer. I want to stay with you. If you leave Toronto I...I want to come with you..." she said softly.
He brought up a hand, his thumb moving to wipe away her tears. The little soft gesture, it spoke volumes, even if there were no words behind it. “When you regain your memories, you may find I’m not the only person you have. You have a whole life out there Mouse that you don’t know of yet. You just have to find the key.” He paused to clear his throat. “I’m not going anywhere, not yet. As for you coming when I do leave, we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.” he was offering no promises, he knew that, but it was the best he could offer.
The small girl let out a sigh as she pulled away from him. It hurt too much. "Ok...just do me a favor? Don't kiss me again unless you mean it." She turned from him then and walked toward the car. That little kiss had changed everything between them now and Mouse didn't know how to deal with it.
He watched her for a moment, a frown playing on his lips. He almost spoke out that he had meant it. The thought surprising himself to where he was stunned for a moment, and the moment to speak the words passed him by. He rubbed the back of his neck for a moment before he then started making his way to the car, it was going to be a long and probably silent drive back to the motel.
