Daddy, meet my boyfriend.
Who: Chloe, Dimitri, Jason
What: Daddy meet my boyfriend!
When: Wednesday night
Where: The lions’ den
Warning: None
Jason felt no better after he’d hung up with Justice. He couldn’t win for losing today. His case was dead in the water unless the ME came up with something in autopsy report or a tip came in. He’d handled his talk with Charlie badly and now she wasn’t speaking to him. Then he’d snapped at Justice because he was upset about that when she’d called to apologize to him. He was glad today was almost over, because if it got any worse, he was going to break something.
He was sitting on his chair, dressed in sweats and a muscle shirt, pretending to watch TV. His barely touched dinner stone cold on the TV tray in front of him, his appetite pretty much died two bites in when he realized Charlie was going to give him the silent treatment for God knew how long. He was so wound up and upset, he couldn’t even nap. Chloe would be home soon, and he’d have to tell her how much he’d screwed up talking to her sister.
Yeah, today just sucked.
Unlike her father, Chloe couldn't have been happier. The day had gone from okay, to awesome to fucking fantastic and by the time she got home from work with Dimitri in tow, she was ready to take on the world. At least until she opened the door, dragging her new boyfriend into the house behind her and laid her eyes on her father who looked not so happy sitting in his chair.
Shit.
Letting go of Dimitri's hand, she put both palms against his chest and her eyes went a little wide as she slowly pushed him out of the door again. "I think this was a bad time." she breathed softly. Maybe God would look down on her with mercy and he'd get away before her father noticed he'd been there in the first place. Not likely, but she could dream.
Dimitri was completely on cloud nine when he picked Chloe up from work. His girlfriend. His lioness. He couldn't stop kissing her the whole ride and when they finally got to her house, he was too busy grinning to worry about meeting her dad. He hadn't been worried in the first place, really. Worry wasn't something DImitri often did. If ever.
He was dragged in the house and as quickly as he been brought in he was suddenly being shoved out again. He blinked, completely confused at this point. He gently gripped her arms, concern on his face. "What's wrong?" he asked, not wanting to leave her if something was wrong. He didn't want to leave her at all but he could see something had upset her in mere seconds and dammit, his lioness was only allowed to be happy.
“Chloe Louise Richards,” Jason was on his feet and following his daughter in a heartbeat. There was no way in hell she was trying to sneak the guy in, she knew he’d been home for hours. So why the hell was she running off? He stopped in the hallway by the front door, arms folded over his chest. She had a big guy with her who smelled of a big cat. He was too far away to really nail it down more than that. “Where are you going, young lady?” He wasn’t mad. Actually, he sounded pretty damned tired.
He just didn’t need anything else tonight.
Chloe bit her bottom lip and closed her eyes, almost wincing a little at the use of her middle name. He didn't sound mad, only tired, but still. She was so close to getting Dimitri a clean escape! Letting out a sigh, she took Dimitri's hand again, resolved in letting him meet her father. "Nowhere..." she said softly as she brought the teenage boy in after her and closed the door. "Daddy, this is Dimitri." she said first. "My... boyfriend."
DImitri wasn't a hundred percent sure what was going on but her dad sounded tired and she sounded nervous so he did the only thing he could think of. Turned on the good ol DImitri charm. He wide grin came to his face and he held out his hand to Jason. "Good to meet you sir, Dimitri Masterson." he said.
Yeah, of course it was her boyfriend. Why else would she bring the guy home? Jason felt kind of bad for overreacting. Chloe had been nothing but responsible and mature about the whole thing with Justice. And that was apparently because she had her sights on this guy. He gave his daughter a look that clearly said ‘You could have told me sooner.’ His attention turned to the boy. Dimitri. Why did people do that to their kids?
“Jason Richards,” he said, shaking the boy’s hand. While Jason wasn’t the tallest guy in the world, he rarely met people who were bigger than he was. Dimitri wasn’t done growing and he was already three inches taller than the werelion and nearly as broad. “Nice to meet you,” he said. “Come on in. Sorry, I wasn’t expecting company.” Hence not being dressed better than he was. He headed for the living room. This was going to be fun, even if it was the least bad thing he’d dealt with today.
Chloe was still flushing a little when they made it to the living room, her fingers still in one of Dimitri's hands. "I would have called, but I thought you'd be busy on your case." she explained. "It was a last minute thing so it's my fault for just showing up without forewarning." She didn't want her father to make negative decisions about Dimitri for something she'd done really.
Dimitri kept hold of her hand as they went into the living room and wondered where the roaring and posturing was. He wasn't complaining exactly, but this wasn't exactly what he expected. "I'm sorry to come unannounced, Chloe just very much wanted us to meet." he said with a smile. "So, it's nice to meet you sir."
That sounded for a second like she expected that he wasn’t going to be home and was sneaking the boy in. Jason forced himself not to jump to conclusions, since apparently Dimitri was Mr Propriety and he hadn’t been sirred as much this morning surrounded by uniforms as he had been in the last five minutes. That made him like the boy already more than he wanted to admit. “It’s okay,” he said. “Get comfy on the couch, I’ll be right back.” He was going to at least go put on a shirt with longer sleeves on it. The muscle shirt he was wearing put the healing nail marks all over his upper arms and shoulders on display. Which would only make this more uncomfy.
Chloe thought she might die of embarrassment before he got back. She settled on the sofa with Dimitri pulled down by her side. "I thought he'd be less tired and in a better mood and I would have called this afternoon to tell him that I was bringing you over, but I just didn't have time before work and after work I just didn't think about it and this is all going to be a horrible, horrible meeting and if he hates you it's going to be all my fault and I... god I shoulda called." she breathed out, the words so quick that they were really just one huge, run-on sentence. She had to take a deep breath after all of that, her fingers brushing her hair out of her face as she shook her head.
"Shh shh shh." he said, putting his arm around her and kissing her temple. "Just calm down." he said softly. "It's not ideal maybe, but it'll be fine. Don't worry yourself into a tizzy, Freckles." he said lovingly, stroking her hair a little to try to get her to relax.
“Freckles?” Jason couldn’t help himself. He had just come back into the living room after retrieving a hooded sweatshirt and pulling it over his head. That was just adorable. Especially since Chloe claimed to hate her freckles. “So, tell me about yourself, Dimitri,” he continued, before his daughter got mad about him making fun of the cutesy nickname her boyfriend had given her.
She simply flushed at the cute moment being walked in on. She'd leave comments about her nickname until after Dimitri had gone. For now she was biting her lower lip as her dad started to converse with her boyfriend. Was it always this terrifying? And why was it scarier for her than Dimitri?
DImitri was completely relaxed, being respectful of distance with Chloe while her father was present. He kept his affections to holding her hand while he spoke. "I'm a senior, like Chloe. I play on the football team as quarterback...As I'm sure you can smell I'm a were, a tiger to be exact. My mothers adopted me from Russian as a baby, so they're humans." Dimitri wasn't all too sure everything Jason would want to know so he was giving the basics.
Well, at least he was actually Russian. That made the name less ridiculous. The rest wasn’t a real surprise. He nodded when the kid admitted to being a weretiger. “Yeah, I knew you were a cat,” he said. “I got a noseful of bleach fumes this morning, so my nose is still protesting and not working well.” A football player. Well, Chloe was the head cheerleader. “So how long have you two been dating?” He didn’t mean it as an accusation, he just wanted to know how long Chloe had been seeing the guy, since he hadn’t smelled him on her before. If anything, he just sounded tired.
Chloe looked at her watch. "Since about three-thirty." she told him. "So about four hours or so. Give or take a couple of minutes." Okay, so she was strikingly accurate, whatever. She was slowly starting to calm down a bit since there wasn't any growling or yelling as of yet. Hopefully things would continue that way.
Dimitri gave a crooked grin. "I finally worked up the courage to ask her out." he said, looking at Chloe like she was the most wonderful thing in the world. To him, she was. "With your permission, I'd like to escort Chloe to homecoming and maybe dinner this weekend?" he asked, looking back to Jason as he squeezed Chloe's fingers.
Okay, Hell had officially frozen over. Chloe had acquired herself a boyfriend and basically brought him right home to introduce the guy to him. Who was formally asking him to take her to homecoming. He hadn’t done that with his wife seventeen years ago. It was outdated then. Jason let out a long breath, shaking his head. “Of course,” he said wryly. “Chloe knows her curfew and the rules. Thanks.” Okay, not only was he tired, this guy wasn’t playing by the rules. Or that was the problem He was playing by a set of rules even Jason hadn’t abided when he this kid’s age. “I’ve had a long day. So I’m gonna go to bed early. Keep him down here, princess.” Jason stood up and leaned over, giving his daughter a kiss on the forehead. Then he nodded to Dimitri. “Nice to meet you again. Sorry I’m not better company tonight, but work was hell.” Not to mention the rest of his day. “Chloe will have to bring you by for dinner later in the week, so you can meet her sisters.” He let out a long breath. “Charlie- Charlotte is upstairs studying and Grace is at my mother’s in the city.” He looked between them and couldn’t even muster the effort to make any threats or remind Chloe of the rules. “Good night. Don’t stay up too late.” Then he escaped to his room.
Chloe was flabbergasted. That had gone surprisingly well, but she knew it probably didn't have as much to do with Dimitri's awesome as she might have liked. Something was wrong and she'd be sure to find out what it was from Charlie as soon as she could. Her father was supposed to talk to the girl after school so she wondered if that hadn't gone very well. She'd find out. She was determined of that simple fact.
"Goodnight, Daddy." she said to her father as she watched him head for his room. Her attentions on Dimitri as soon as he disappeared. "He's... usually more terrifying than that." she told him. "I think something's wrong..."
"Goodnight, sir." he said and he too could tell something was definitely amiss. He could smell it on Chloe's father as plain as day. He looked at Chloe and could tell she was worried. "Why don't I head home and maybe you can talk to your sister?" he suggested. As much as he wanted to hold her and kiss away her troubles, he knew he didn't have that power.
She gently brushed her fingers over his cheek and let out a sigh. She didn't want him to go, but she wasn't going to leave Charlie upstairs to wallow in whatever had transpired between her and their father. "I want to say no." she told him honestly. "But I need to check on my sister. She might need me." She and Charlie might not get along all that great all the time, but she was still her baby sister as far as Chloe was concerned. "I have to work again tomorrow, but if you wanna hang out for a little while after school, we could." she smiled. "Maybe after work too?" she said hopefully.
Dimitri smiled and kissed her forehead. "I'm at your beck and call, sweetpea." he promised her. "You talk with your sister and if you want to, give me a call later." He understood she needed time with her family right now, to fix whatever had happened. He had the rest of his life to be with her, he didn't need to crowd her.
"How late can I call?" she questioned, not wanting to get him in trouble. "It shouldn't be too late, but I don't want to make your moms mad or anything." she explained, reluctantly getting up from the sofa and offering out a hand to him so she could walk him to the door.
He stood and took her hand, walking to the front door with her. "You can call late as you want." he said. "I'll have my phone on low enough they won't be able to hear." he said. Having human parents did have its' benefits. DImitri was a good kid though so it wasn't anything he really exploited.
"Okay." she smiled. "I'll call you as soon as I finish talking to my sister. Thank you for coming over tonight." she said. "And for bringing me home. For everything." she sighed, leaning up to steal a kiss from him before opening the door and letting him out. "Drive safe. Text me soon as you get home."
He wrapped his arms around her, taking one more kiss from her. "I will. Good luck, Freckles." he said before finally letting her go. It was hard for him, but he walked to his truck, backwards the whole way so he could keep his eyes on her. He gave her one last smile before getting into his truck. He made sure she closed the door before driving away, already missing her.
She smiled in return and once he'd pulled away, she reluctantly closed the door and leaned back against it with a heavy sigh. She wasn't sure who she should talk to first, Charlie or their father. Figuring her father was asleep, she headed for the stairs. Hopefully she wasn't walking into a boobytrap.
