who? Tomás Keller and Henry Power.
when? About a week ago or so.
where? Henry's apartment.
what? The two have a talk about the future and come up with a super fun plan.
“Hey, you,” Henry pushed Tomás’ shoulder, coming up behind him at the kitchen table. Dinner had been ordered in and devoured, and now it was on to a pie he had picked up at the market. End of season blackberries. It had been good, even though Tomás had wondered why Henry had gone so far into town to pick up Indian food and bring it back. Why he had cleaned his quiet apartment (now theirs, since they couldn’t seem to stay apart in their own rooms ever) and even got flowers. Flowers wasn’t a Henry thing. But there they were, bright summer colors in a vase on the coffee table. Tomás assumed correctly that something was up. But Henry sucked at bringing things up, and beyond pushing his shoulder, the older boy sat in the chair next to him, a table corner between them, and chewed a nail. Nervous. Also not normal for him. “How... are you feeling about starting college soon? Be honest with me.” It was the flowers that gave him the hint something was different about this dinner. While he could overlook the distant Indian food and the special berry pie, he couldn’t exactly overlook the flowers. Neither of them were the flower giving type, so it was only logical Tomás concluded there was something up with Henry. However, he played along with the dinner like he thought was appropriate and even did a good job of not bringing up the fact Henry was biting his nails. It made him nervous himself, which was why he let out a tiny sigh of relief when Henry brought up the college question. Thank goodness that was all. “I don’t know. It’s the next logical step, right?” Looking down at the table, he drummed his fingers across the wooden surface a few times before speaking again. “Kind of wish it was a bit farther away from here though.” “Yeah, there’s that...” Henry knew Tomás would have preferred to go somewhere else. It was only natural: see parts of the world you hadn’t yet experienced. Not stay in the same town you had lived in most of your life. “What if... what if we did? Just, go elsewhere? What would you say to that?” It wasn't just see the world for him. At this point, it was getting away from the life and superhero community he had know for eighteen years. "Like apply to another college," he asked with a confused tone in his voice. "Because I am pretty sure we have to wait until the next semester to do that." “Or maybe, just... withhold admission for a year?” Henry had heard you could do that, maybe. Hopefully. Just put it on pause. “Tell them you need a year off and you’ll come back next year?” “Oh. Oh!” Sitting back, he began to chew on his lower lip as all the pieces clicked together and he finally understood just what Henry was suggesting. “Well what did you want to do instead?” Henry shrugged, unsure of that himself. Either way, he knew it was about going out. Out into the world. “Well... Ian and Yoko will be in Europe for awhile. I’m not sure how long, but. That’s a place to start.” He lost himself in thought for a few moments. While he did want to go to college eventually, Tomás wasn’t so sure now was the time to do it. “I think that could be a good idea,” he finally answered before Awkward Silence could settle in between them. “I mean, I want to go to school eventually. But I don’t think I’m ever going to get better with things if I stay here.” Exhaling, Henry rubbed his head and felt relief; they were on the same page here. “You’re not. Look at what’s happened recently, yeah? Look at it. All of it. How are you going to get better if your environment isn’t stable?” “I know right? Shit just seems like it is getting worse and worse too.” He sighed as he ran his fingers through his hair. “There is just so much shit to deal with here. And as stupid as it sounds, I don’t think being around some of these people will allow me to get better. You sure we want to try a vacation together again? We could technically travel a long while here?” Henry lifted one shoulder then the other in a unsure shrug. Their last vacation had been less than so. Things had changed, though, he wasn’t... it wasn’t the same. “No technical’s about it, we could travel awhile. Join that special club of people who just travel the world for a whole year, hitting every continent but Antarctica. And we may even be able to do that, I don’t know. But I’m willing to try, if you are.” Neither of them were the same. Since their trip to Belize so much had changed, though Tomás believed it was all for the positive. Sure, they weren’t the same people, but they were different people who worked even better together. “I think we should just stick to traveling with the two of us. Go where we want when we want. See who and what we want.” This answer---this agreement---made Henry giggle and he swooped forward, taking up Tomás’ hands in his. Holding them against his chest, Henry kneeled and asked, in all seriousness, “Then, Julian Tomás Keller, will you be my travel buddy?” He rolled his eyes, though there was a smile on his face as he did. “Yes, Henry. I will be your travel buddy. Now please get up off your knees.” A grin, “Awesome.” He did get off his knees, bending over to plant a tender kiss againt Tomás brow. “I’ll leave it to you to tell the college folks, and to clean the kitchen. I’m gonna go take a shower. I smell like curry.” |
