Kenna let out a playful giggle and smiled as he blinked in shock. That was understandable. And this was going far better than the last time she spoke to someone about this. Well. Perhaps it was also because Matt knew about this place. That he was not suddenly taken aback by whatever he was. She knew he was not directly connected to the earth. That was about it. Well. No, he was also not a vampire or a gargoyle, as it was bright out. But that left a lot of options open. Not that she cared, really. He seemed really nice and kind. Even if he was blinking in shock, like that would clear away what he just watched happen. And when Matt admitted he could not do what she just did, Kenna offered a sweet smile and a shrug. “I know,” she explained to him. “I mean. I could tell if you were one of mine or not. Or, if anything the plants would have. They can tell, too, for that stuff.” She smiled again. “And thank you. It’s not always willing. If I get scared or nervous, it happens, or I get vines growing with thorns. Makes arguments kind of weird.” It was always awkward in class if she had to do something she was unprepared for. Not even makeup covered it up.
“Your sister went to Stanford, she asked almost wistfully. Of course, there was very little at that school she was interested in studying. But the idea of it was amazing. And her eyes were showing how amazed she was by it. “I have never really been outside of Manhattan up there. It’s…” She paused and thought heavily on how to explain it. “Disconnected.” That fit. She could live just fine in a city if it had a park or enough space in her apartment for plants. It would be okay, but the girl knew herself. She would miss her wildlife. Her scenery. Her greenery. “And New York is way more famous. I’m not like, from Santa Monica or anything.”
“If you handed me a map and said find your way, I’d just give up and survive off of photosynthesis,” Kenna replied with a humored grin. She would just give up. Be a tree. Her ancestors did that, after all. “But it’s cool you did! See, you seem like the type of person to have in a zombie apocalypse.” Maps. Big guy. He was probably like super strong… Yes, definitely someone for the improbable end of the world scenario.
When he gave the name, Kenna more or less rolled through the list of names and faces for that one. Her features scrunched hard in focus. When she pictured him, or rather the long and… colorful phrase he one time used outside her store that scandalized her mind for a few hours, she laughed. “I think so? Smaller guy with big eyes, right?” She did not remember much aside from his loud voice, almost jarring accent, and those big, expressive eyes. She tried to picture how those two (Matt and this Nuno) fit together. “Old friends?”
