For many, just the words 'thrift shop' brought to mind images of dusty, overflowing shelves stuffed with things like broken coffee pots and secondhand VHS tapes. But the thrift store in town was thankfully different - Marie found herself coming here regularly, to do some treasure hunting. She was patient, rummaging through a lot of hard 'no's, but was ultimately rewarded with some great finds - clothes, actual brand name frocks and oftentimes shoes as well. The last time she was here she found a delightful gingham boucle dress, normally quite expensive so she had to snatch up the deal. One of her most prized possessions was a reversible garnet and niobium pendant on a silver chain. The deep red of the garnet was a favorite color of hers, and niobium was actually quite rare - you had to know what to look for, when to keep digging and when to actually stop and examine something. In fact, her latest find had her considering a certain piece of 'Nirvana' denim from the 1990s. She had seen similar items on eBay for much more - this particular gem was only about ten dollars. But did she need it? Would she wear it? She slipped it on and it fit nicely, if a little big the way many finds tended to be - but she could tailor her own clothes, and besides, didn't mind a jacket running a little large. Still. Shopping involved so many decisions. It also was like a soothing balm, in some ways, cheering her up and pulling her out of whatever funk she'd found herself in - at least a little. She refused to be melancholy, not outwardly. But the life of a succubus was often lonely in the sense that you knew, always, in the back of your mind that you could not get too close to anyone - telling herself she didn't want to anyway was untrue, so she dealt with the feelings that fact brought rather than do herself a disservice and lie. Thus, she dealt with it by shopping. Retail therapy, no? |
