RP: Closed Door Meetings at the MLE...
Date: 4 August 1997, Evening
Characters: Graylin Savage, Gawain Robards, Nymphadora Lupin
Location: Gawain's Office, MLE
Status: Private
Summary: Gawain calls Tonks and Savage in for an important assignment.
Completion: Complete

Mornings seemed to come earlier and earlier these days. Tonks knew mentally that she was getting up the same hour every morning, taking the same too quick shower, rushing out the same door just a few minutes late and getting into the office just a few panicked minutes early, but somehow it felt like the world was moving heavier. Her stomach sat heavy and nauseated, putting her off even her morning cup of coffee, while the air around the ministry had gotten thick with tension. For the first time in years of service, Tonks walked into the office five minutes late and without an ounce of eagerness in her heart. She never disliked her job, but under Yaxley, she might just begin to all too quickly.

She headed straight to her desk, bypassing the coffee which she had been so loyally drinking since she got here. Hell, she was the one who demanded they have coffee made as well as tea, much preferring the American pick-me-up in the mornings to a hot, soothing beverage. Her stomach couldn't take either. Instead, she headed straight to her desk, only to find a Purple Memo rested in her little inbox. Urgent, important. It matched one on Savage's desk, even if she didn't notice it yet. She set down her small travel case and reached her left hand for the memo, carefully letting it open upon recognition of her touch. Security spell enforced. She blinked curiously as she began to read.

Auror Lupin,

I wish to see you and Savage in my office as soon as you start work today. She has the same summons. - Robards

Tonks looked up, gazing over in Savage's direction. Possibly the woman wasn't even at her desk any longer. Either way, Tonks made her way straight to Robards' office and strongly knocked upon the door. She tried to make herself look a bit more put together and even pinched her cheeks to give herself some colour that she hadn't had all morning. The last thing she needed was to be taken off this case because she looked sickly. If this was the case she hoped it was, either way.

Hearing the knock, Gawain gestured for Savage to open the door. He smiled faintly when he saw Tonks on the other side, though he didn't let his true regard for her wash over his face. She was a married woman, and he had no business thinking about her in any way other than a boss with an employee.

"Auror Tonks, come in," he instructed. Once the door was shut, he nodded to the seats in front of his desk. "Have a seat."

Gray stood in Robards' office moving from foot to food. She was a little nervous as to why she had been called in but felt a little better when she let Tonks into the office. When they had both taken a seat Gray leaned forward eager to hear what was going on.

"Sir?"

Tonks stepped into the room and managed not to trip over anything out of nerves for being late. It seemed exhaustion was overtaking any sort of nerves she might have, and often nervousness could add to her clumsiness more than anything in the world. So, when she was moving just out of rote and her body too tired to really be on edge, she actually managed an odd sort of grace, even this hour of the morning.

Tonks shut the door behind her, securing the lock and, paranoid perhaps, whispering a white noise spell to cover along all the edges of the door. She would not stand for this conversation to be evasdropped upon, one way or another. Once she was certain the spell was in place, she crossed the rest of the way to the boss' seat and dropped herself wearily into sitting.

"Wotcher, sir. Savage. Sorry I'm late. Lots of... traffic today, you know. People going a bit crazy and all."

Gawain raised a brow as Tonks spelled his door. That was interesting.

"Traffic?" he echoed, his lips twitching in amusement despite the seriousness of the situation. "We'll have to put some trainees on directing the influx of people out of the lift then."

Taking out two files, he held them out to each woman. He had a feeling Yaxley wouldn't much care for who he had assigned the task of looking into Dumbledore's desk - he'd met with the man yesterday and didn't much care for him - but it was his prerogative to assign his men as he saw fit.

"I'm assigning you two to investigate the Dumbledore death."

Gray nodded a greeting to Tonks as she came raising an eyebrow as the other Auror put extra protection on the door. Is she paranoid?. Turning her attention back to Robards she noticed he looked a little amused and it made her smile. Taking the file from him and opened it up, her eyes went wide. Before she even had the chance to question him, Robards confirmed it. Gray gave Tonks a sideways look and swallowed. "Are you sure sir? I'm mean, I'm sure we are more than capable of investigates but won't Yaxley flip?"

Tonks stretched her fingertips across the desk, nodding quietly to him as her hopes and suspicions were confirmed by his words. At least -something- was going to go right in this wretched week. She opened the folder, looking down to the pages tiredly. If either of them were particularly observant, she was no longer wearing her wedding ring. But then perhaps she just forgot to put it on this morning. People have made stranger mistakes.

She silently looked over the information encased in the folder, her expression business like and utterly professional, hiding any other emotions that might wish to creep around the edges. She finally nodded quietly Gawain's direction, "Good. Thank you, sir. But yes, I am curious how you are going to get around your boss' no doubt disapproval of your choices." She turned bloodshot blue eyes in the slightly older man's direction.

When Tonks reached for the file, his eyes dropped to her bare left hand, and he was momentarily distracted by that. Did it mean something?

Pulling himself back to the topic at hand, he met Savage's eyes. "Is there something about Yaxley that bothers you, Auror Savage? And you, Auror Tonks? Have either of you given him reason to suspect that you might not be able to handle such an assignment?" he asked. He knew how he felt, but it wouldn't hurt to take an informal poll.

Gray couldn't help but wrinkle her nose at the mention of Yaxley's name. "To be honest sir? He creeps me out. Just get the feeling he's not trustworthy." As soon as the worlds were out of her mouth she clapped her hand over it terribly grateful for Tonks putting up extra wards over the office.

Flushing she shook her head. "No sir! At least I don't think so. He just doesn't strike me as the type who wants women on the case. Not that Auror Tonks and I aren't perfectly capable."

Whether Tonks realized Gawain's brief notice of her empty left hand couldn't be told. She certainly showed no outward sign, but then beneath those forced business layers of expression she looked half asleep anyway. She crossed her legs beneath her robes, trying to get comfortable in the chair even as she sat up stiffly straight. She kept her eyes mainly upon the paper below, finishing reading her assignment before she finally looked back to the pair.

"Yaxley, though never confirmed, certainly seems among those who considers his blood better than other's. He might be a liability. I hope I am wrong. But, if he does consider that, then he might have issue with both Savage and myself. I suppose this assignment alone will give him a chance to show is true colours." Tonks responded in utter earnesty, though her eyes now lifted to stare straight at Robards, as if she could read his loyalty in his reaction to those simple words.

Gawain tried to keep his expression neutral, but he made mental notes on both Savage's and Tonks' opinions. He was wondering where Tonks came by her information. That wasn't anything he'd heard, and he liked to think he heard a bit of all the gossip.

Looking over at her, he raised a brow. "I'd be interested in where your information is coming from, Auror Tonks," he admitted. He wasn't sure he liked the sound of either the information itself or where she might have heard it. She was married to Lupin, who had ties to Dumbledore's vigilante group. Bugger, it was entirely possible she was part of that.

He rubbed his eyes wearily. It'd been a hell of a weekend.

"And, Auror Savage, I'd recommend against voicing that concern about our head of department outside of a very strong silencing spell."

Gray had never considered that they might have troubles because of her blood status. She wondered what else Tonks might know. Could be good to have a chance to actually talk to her.

Robards looked tired and she coudln't help wonder if he got enough sleep. Speaking of sleep, wonder what he sleeps in? Stop it Gray!

She nodded as he chided her about speaking off the cuff like that. "Yes, and I won't again sir."

Tonks nodded in agreement to the comment of the spell, "The charm I worked on the door is effective, but such conversations should have far more wards between them and the outside world. As for my information, well, it is not hard to hear what the world says about a man, and what a man says to the world, if one is truly listening." Of course, she had heard it elsewhere, but passing something off as simple gossip made the information not only more acceptable, but a bit safer to promote, as it could be dismissed by those who might find it threatening.

Tonks finally finished with her file, folding it shut and stifling just a bit of a yawn as her body began to really feel that need for coffee. It was too damned early in the morning for any of this.

Gossip then? That was more palatable. He didn't trust vigilantes, especially when two such groups were in direct opposition to each other. He understood the Order of the Phoenix wanting to do something, but it was best left to the professionals, in his mind.

"I see," he said, looking from one to the other. "One thing, before you go. You will report to me and only me about this case. I want to be kept abreast of any new developments the day they happen, and unless Yaxley or the Minister himself asks for an update, you won't say a word to anyone. Politically, this is a charged investigation, and one I don't want information leaking to the media or other members of the Ministry if we can help it."

She held her filed tightly, knowing she would study it for most of the night once she got home. Maybe she could pick more information just wandering around the ministry.

At Robards' new orders Gray nodded solemnly. With an investigation this sensitive the fewer people who knew the better.

"Yes, sir. Do we have a deadline or are we allowed to take all the time we need?"

Tonks stood, as it seemed the meeting was coming to an ending, and nodded quietly to both of them. "Of course, sir. This comes to your desk and no other's. And if Yaxley or Thicknesse ask for an update without you, we should give it to them?" Not that Tonks would say directly she was more loyal to Robards, but those words made it very clear, indirectly, that her true loyalty lay with the man before her and none other.

She then looked over to her partner in work, now, studying the young woman with almost concerned eyes. She didn't know if Savage was aware of what they were both getting into, but it wasn't going to be easy.

Gawain felt a flare of pleasure at her apparent trust in him, though comparing him with Yaxley and Thicknesse, that couldn't be saying all that much.

"Yes, they're my superiors," he said, nodding. He waited a moment before continuing, measuring his words carefully. "Though should that happen, I would like to be informed about it as soon as possible. I know how busy Yaxley and Minister Thicknesse must be, so we shouldn't expect them to remember to inform me of such things with everything else they have to deal with."

He looked from one to the other and then nodded. "Oh, and should either of you need another set of hands for your other cases, you might try Johnson. She seems eager, and I'd like her to get different viewpoints in training," he said mildly. "I'll let her mentor know that I've tapped her for your legwork."

Gray stood ready to get started. Something about this case felt off but it had piqued her curiousity now. Hopefully Yaxley or Thickeness would approach her for updates.

She and Tonks need to talk and set up a plan of attack. "Yes sir." Turning to Tonks Gray smiled. "Want to have lunch out side of the ministry to discuss the case." After all the security spells Gray wasn't keen to talk at the ministry where the walls might have ears.

Tonks nodded towards Gawain one last time. "Understood, sir. I will be certain to make my reports as... Full as possible, to yourself." She left those somewhat mysterious words as is, not adding or detracting, but just readying her slender form to leave.

She paused at the edge of the door before she dropped the charm, nodding towards Graylin. "Yes, outside would be wise. Perhaps my flat? It will be empty and it is not far, just off of Diagon." Tonks offered her formally, allowing no more emotion to betray her voice despite the quiet, stabbing knowledge that she would be going home to an empty home once again.

Gawain nodded, pleased that they were taking the case and the secrecy necessary so seriously. He wasn't sure what they'd find, but he hoped it wouldn't bugger things up too much.

As they left, he looked at the stack of files he needed to go through. There had been a few reports of some rather worrisome acts of violence over the past few days, and he needed to take a look at them and see if there were any similarities between them. He was betting they were the work of Death Eaters, but he wasn't entirely sure why they had chosen the targets they did.

And if he couldn't figure it out, he might have to put someone on that. Shacklebolt might be good for that, since he wasn't Spell-o-taped to his bloody desk, like Gawain was.

Some days he missed field work.
