RP: An unexpected half day off
Date: 31 September 1997
Characters: Cho Chang, random folks?
Location: Diagon
Status: Public
Summary: Shopping
Completion: incomplete

Cho wandered down the length of Diagon in the mid afternoon sunshine.  Great Aunt Ling-ling had sent her off, claiming that there was nothing urgent to be done and that her favorite niece needed to have a bit of fun in a public place.

Cho had been immediately suspicious.   The look in the stern old woman's eyes prevented her from asking any questions

So here she was, a basket filled with her purchases over her arm, debating whether she had the nerve to go into the upper class lingerie store artfully hidden next door to Madam Malken's.

Terence walked down Diagon with a bit of a spring in his step. He'd visited the Leaky for lunch, and the food was acceptable enough to please him. Anything was better than what was served in the Ministry canteen, Terence had often found himself wondering who was responsible for the food there. Perhaps something could be done to make the food there better, but he filed that thought away for later. He was a really simple sort of fellow, good food, an occasional tumble, and having things work the way that he wanted them to kept him happy.

"Miss Chang," Terence greeted with an amused glint in his eye as he met Cho along his walk. He'd only known her from quidditch at Hogwarts, but aside from that he also knew that she belonged to a well-respected merchant family. He had time to chat, Terence fortunately had the luxury of longer lunch breaks now. "From the looks of it, your family business seems to be doing well," he said as he observed her basket, "But how are you on this fine day?"

Cho's eyes narrowed a bit when Higgs spoke to her rather than passing on by. Petty or not, the first thing she thought of whenever she saw the rapscallion was the sound of his laughter as he shoved her into the bloody stands during her very first game as Seeker for Ravenclaw.

"Mr. Higgs," she said primly. "Chang Imports is doing quite well, thank you." She pulled her basket a touch closer, more than thankful that she had met him before she had gone into the lingerie store. She would have burnt to a cider blushing.

"I am fine. And yourself?"

Terence quirked an eyebrow at her expression. Was she still sour because of a little quidditch accident he may or may not have caused during her first match? Leave it to a bird to remember, but quidditch wasn't a game for girls to play. They got hurt so easily, Terence had always though that putting girls in the game disadvantaged teams, but then that had always made things better for Slytherin.

"It's good to hear that, your family's business is the sort that should be thriving. And it's good to see which places are adapting well to change," Terence remarked, gesturing toward the two stores in front of them. "But I don't feel that this place'll be seeing a slow in business," He said with a smirk as he nodded his head toward the lingerie store she'd been considering.

"I'm doing very well, my job at the Ministry has never been better." Terence didn't usually tell people that he was an Obliviator flat out. "I think that Thicknesse is the kind of leadership we've needed around here."

She involuntarily followed his nod toward the store and damned herself for blushing. Lips pursed, she forced her eyes back to his. "Changs know how to adapt. We do business all over the world. It takes more than a simple change in governmental policy to upset our business plans."

Of course he works for the Ministry. He'd probably been dancing in the aisles when the anti-Muggleborn policies started being implimented. "It must be nice to be doing well in your chosen profession."

Terence folded his arms over his chest, smirking a bit at her blush. That was interesting, she'd probably been about to go in the lingerie before he'd stopped her. Damn him and his poor timing.

"I'm sure that recent policies weren't designed to negatively affect your family's business. On the contrary, haven't the changes helped with some of your competitors?" Terence didn't know how the new legislation worked, and he didn't quite understand all of it's implications, but he knew that his life was getting easier, even if he did have to obliviate more people now.

"I assume that you know the feeling, Miss Chang," Terence said. He wasn't sure how to interpret her tone. She didn't seem to completely oppose all of the Ministry's new regulations, but he family didn't have the reputation of the Weasley family, that was certain. He'd do a bit of research later.

"We don't have competition for most of our markets," she said rather haughtily. "However there have been a few of the other shipping companies that had to cut back due to the loss of manpower." She certainly wasn't going to admit how much of that man power slipped into Chang ships in London and out again in foreign ports.

"I am doing well enough for myself. In fact if you are in the Ministry on the Trade related floors, you might very well see me. I am an Import/Export Clerk and am often in and out of the Ministry for a variety of reasons."

"I see. It's good to know that the Ministry is doing good by Chang Imports," Terence said, catching the haughtiness in her voice. The Changs deserved a monopoly over trade in Britain, it was good that their lesser competitors were no longer much of a threat, but she could have shown a bit more appreciation. They would be good allies if the Ministry treated them the right way.

"I work in Catastrophes and Accidents, so I don't see much of the Trade or International Cooperation floors." Terence paused for a moment to examine his watch. "I've enjoyed seeing you today, Miss Chang, but I'm afraid that I do have to get back to work soon. Perhaps we'll see each other again soon, even if it's within the confines of the Ministry." Terence wished her good luck with the rest of her shopping before he headed back to the Ministry. He wasn't sure of what to make of Cho Chang, but at least she didn't seem completely hostile to the new regulations.

"Good day, Mr. Higgs." Cho watched him go, loitering near the entry of Madam Malken's until he was well out of sight. Only then did she duck into the lingerie shop.

After that conversation, she was definitely treating herself to something pretty to drive the memory of Terence Higgs right out of her mind.
