OWL: For Alicia Spinnet
Date: 19 September 1997
Characters: Xavier Selwyn, Alicia Spinnet
Location: Respective
Status: Private
Summary: Xavier owls Alicia...
Completion: Complete

Alicia,

It's been some time since I heard from you. I saw you yesterday getting off the lift at the Ministry - I do hope things are well?

As for the purpose of my owl - I have a dinner to which I am required to attend on Sunday evening. Could I convince you to come with me? You'll make the tedium of it pass much more quickly, and I can promise the food will be good. Dress is formal and I can pick you up at seven.

Alicia regarded the owl for some time after it came before getting a quill to write back. It had been weeks since she'd spoken with Selwyn, but then again she had been busy at work. And then there was the matter of her experience at the Ministry and how strange and terrifying it had been, and that he too worked there. It could be a coincidence, or perhaps not.

The fact that he might be a Death Eater had just started to occur to her, although, of course there were people at the Ministry who were not. Lots of them most likely, just trying to do their jobs.

If he wasn't one, he was just an ordinary man and she had enjoyed her time with him very much, and she might be a fool to say no.

If he was one it could be very dangerous to say no judging by Lestrange. There was also no point in lying to him about why she was at the Ministry, judging by his questions to her at the bank that first time, he had access to information about people.

She had bit the end of her quill ragged from nerves before finally writing back.

Xavier,

I wasn't certain I was going to hear from you again, but I've been really busy lately, so I might have missed it. I had to go to France for a week for work and have been pulling longer shifts than usual of late.

Thy other day at the Ministry I was called in to answer a few questions. Nothing too terrible. I didn't see you, you should have said hello.

I'm not certain what help I'll be at a formal dinner, even if you are very convincing. Is it for the Ministry? I may have to go shopping for new robes in that case.

Alicia

Xavier looked at her reply, smirking a little. He could almost hear her indecision. Well, he'd just have to be quite convincing then. The last thing he wanted was to attend his mother's first dinner party of the season without a date. He'd be set up continually and it'd be a bugger to get out of it. She hated when he shagged the daughters of friends and then never took them out.

Beginning the return owl, he contemplated how to address her suggestion of saying hello. He'd been just going into the interview with her little friend, Bell, but he couldn't very well say that. Probably best just to ignore it altogether.

Alicia,

You'll keep me sane at the dinner - the biggest of all helps. The dinner is at my home in the country, but if you'd like to go get a new set of robes, who am I to stop a lady from shopping?

I'll pick you up at seven, then.

His response made her smile despite herself. Maybe he was really just a normal guy. Her next response came quicker, and a bit lighter in tone, even if she was surprised to be invited to a dinner at his home.

Xavier,

I am all for helping people keep their sanity. Insanity, I am finding lately, is overrated. Am I to assume I'm going to meet your mother if I attend? Mothers can be frightening. Do tell me my mother isn't going to be there.

I may just have to go shopping in any case. Something to help you keep your sanity perhaps? We're not talking the same sort of distracting I did for you at the Quidditch game, are we?

You're assuming I'm saying yes I take it.

There, that was better. He had to smile, though - obviously Bellatrix had been her usual charming self.

Alicia,

You've had experience with insanity lately? You should take a day off from work then, if the goblins are driving you to that end.

And honestly, I have no idea who's on the guest list - I try to avoid that when I can, so Mother doesn't try to pull me into the planning of it all.

And while the distractions of the Quidditch game were terribly brilliant, I think something a bit more sedate is appropriate for one of Mother's parties - discussions about things that are corns, bunions, and aching joints?

And a woman like you would have said no already if you'd planned to - or not owled back at all.

Xavier,

Briefly, I assure you. And the goblins are fine, grumpy and money grubbing, but fine.

Well, try to find out about my Mother. That could be awkward. Surely you don't want her asking questions do you? I don't

Somehow you have just managed to kill all of my sexual nature. Completely and entirely with one sentence. Really.

You think you know me do you?

Come at seven. We'll see if I'm ready.

Alicia,

I've been getting questions for years now - but for your sake, I'll inquire. If I get pulled into the planning, you'll owe me.

And somehow I doubt anyone would be able to kill your sexual nature, though I'll do my best to help you find it on Sunday.

As for knowing you, I know parts of you. I'm looking forwar to knowing more.

At seven then.
