RP: Investigation
Date: 19 September 1997
Characters: Gawain Robards, Graylin Savage
Location: Muggle England
Status: semi-private
Summary: Gawain and Gray finally go looking for the Grangers.
Completion: Complete

Gawain gave himself another look over, just to make sure he didn't look like a complete and total idiot. Everything seemed to be in place, though, so he looked over at Savage.

They weren't able to put off going out to search for Potter any longer, and they were beginning with trying to track down Hermione Granger. He'd apprised the Minister and Yaxley of their intentions via memo - hopefully they wouldn't actually read it until after they'd gone. The last thing they needed was to be ordered to take Bellatrix Lestrange along with them to Muggle England. That'd be the worst idea in the history of ideas, he was fairly certain.

"Ready, Savage?" he asked, raising both brows.

Gray nodded, she had taken care to wear muggle clothing and just a cape over it just in case Robard was going full wizard. From the muggles she knew and had met Wizarding clothing could be a little off putting and the last thing she wanted was to put the Granger's more on edge.

"Yes, sir. Do you know exactly where we are apparating to?"

Consulting the file, he rattled off the appropriate address in Muggle Britain. "There's a shop not far from there, owned by a witch I went to school with. I've already spoken with Eunice, and she's allowing us to Floo to her bookshop."

He gestured for Savage to follow him. A few moments later, they were at the Atrium level. He glanced over at the monstrosity in the center and then averted his eyes. Best to go about this with a clear head.

"The floo address is Betty's Bookshop," he said as he grabbed a handful of floo powder and stepped into the floo. "See you there."

Gray followed him to the Ministry floo, it was probably a good idea to go that way rather than stir up unneeded attention.

"Alright sir."

Stepping into the floo, Gray gave the address, and arrived on the other side with a puff of green smoke. Thankfully she had remembered to put up a cleaning charm so her clothes remained soot free.

"Ready to go sir."

After introducing Savage to Eunice (aka "Betty"), they moved out of the stockroom and into the shop proper.

"It's just up the road a bit. We'll take a taxi, I think," he said as they stepped out into the cooling autumn air. It didn't take too long to hail one, and he got in, trying to act nonchalant about the entire business. He hadn't been in enough of their automobiles for it to be completely a non-event, though he'd seen them often enough.

He poked at the window lever, eyes lighting up as the window lowered of its own accord. Fascinating.

She greeted Betty with a smile and they headed out into the street. Gray hadn't been to a muggle town in months, but there was a certain smell about the place that just made her smile.

As they got into the taxi, Gray couldn't help but wonder if he had thought to bring muggle money with him. Watching Robards in the car made something girly in her sigh but Gray managed (she hoped) not to show it. Soon they were at their destination and she got out of the car in front of a nice middle class house.

"Think they're home sir?"

After giving the man the proper number of flimsy paper notes (really, how did Muggles manage not to lose it? It'd fly off at the slightest breeze!), Gawain emerged from the car.

"I'm not quite sure - I've got the address of their dental practice as well. If they're not here, they'll be there, I'm sure," he said, leaning back into the cab and asking the man to wait a few minutes.

The curtains were drawn and the grass looked like it could use a few good cutting charms. It had a look of being slightly unkempt, but he didn't take that to mean anything. Perhaps the Grangers were just not very good with landscape upkeep.

"Let's go find out, Savage," he said, striding up the walk.

Following Robards up the walk, Gray noticed how unkempt the place looked, like they hadn't bothered to care how anything looked. It struck her as a little odd but then they could be the sort of people who didn't care about that sort of thing.

With the curtains drawn, she figured there was a good chance that they were at work, but one never knew perhaps they were just having a lie in. At the door, she waited for Robards to knock.

There was no answer to his knock, which wasn't all that surprising.

"Looking for the Grangers, are you?" a new voice called out.

Gawain turned, seeing an older man with a cane looking over at them from his front porch.

"Yes, sir, we are," Gawain confirmed.

"Won't find them there. They hightailed it out a few months ago without a word to anyone. Hmph, don't know why - left their practice, too, they say."

Gray looked around Robards as she heard the man's voice. Her eyes went wide and she looked at Robards in confusion. The Grangers had just up and left? Leaving their business? The questions flew through Gray's head and were clear in her eyes.

"So what now sir? Think that Death Eaters got to them sir?"

Gawain took all this information in, glad that Savage at least pitched her voice low enough so the neighbor wouldn't overhear.

"No, not them," he said shortly. He returned his attention to the neighbor, asking for specific dates. A man like him would know - he was the street's busybody. "When?"

He'd been right - the man had known - and he filed away the dates to add to the papers back at the office.

"What about their daughter, Hermione?"

"Haven't seen her either. Just up and disappeared. If you find them, I've been taking in their mail. Can't say the creditors are happy with them, either. Their bills are piling up!"

After thanking the man, Gawain looked down at Savage as they walked back to the taxi. "They're in hiding somewhere. Granger probably had it all prepared. They left a month or so after Dumbledore was killed. So Potter's disappearance was probably planned as well."

The neighbor provided a lot of valuable amount of information, Gray wondered if every neighborhood had someone who just paid more attention that others did.

As they walked back to the taxi, Gray thought about what it all meant. The timing off it all.

"If they planned all this then how did they know how bad things were going-- are getting?"

Gawain shook his head, holding open the door for her. They'd have to watch their words so the Muggle wouldn't put two and two together.

"I don't know. They must have known something. With dear old Al gone, they must have worried that something like this would happen. Perhaps even that group had something to do with it. He's in thick with them, isn't he?"

He rubbed a hand over his face, giving the driver the address of the dental office. They'd check there too, just in case the old man had it wrong.

Sliding into the taxi Gray moved far enough over for Robards to join her. The whole trip could either be seen as a total loss or a new clue into the Harry Potter case. It was unlikely that their disappearance was a coincidence in any case.

As they headed over to the office, Gray hoped that they hadn’t left their patients suffering in any way.

“It is possible sir. I think the death of Professor Dumbledore probably caused a lot of panic for parents of muggle borns. Even if they weren’t gone now if they got the Prophet delivered I’m sure they’d have gone by now taking Hermione with them to protect her.”

Gawain gave Savage a sharp look, nodding to the taxi driver, who was giving them a look in the mirror. Gawain smiled at him. They'd need to Obliviate him, probably, when they were through.

"Careful, Savage," he warned. "We don't know where they've gone or who went with them. We'll have to make inquiries, of course, but to assume is to make an ass out of you and me."

The office didn't give them any more clues, though there was a sign on the door saying that the Grangers were out of the country for an indeterminate amount of time. Was that trying to throw people off or was it the truth? Something else to look into, he determined as they made their way out of the office building and back to the waiting taxi.

Gray bit her lip as Robards pointed out the taxi driver and she hoped she hadn’t said anything too odd in his presence.

“Yes, sir. Hopefully someone at the office will have a better idea of what’s going on.”

Unfortunately, when they arrived at the office there was even less to go on other than they were out of the country. Soon they were back in the taxi more confused than when they had started.

“I guess the neighbor was right sir, they really just up and go. Maybe they took their daughter with them?”

"It's possible, very possible," he said, though for himself, he really believed that Granger and Potter were out there together somewhere.

They were quiet as the taxi grew closer to the shop, and as Gawain paid the man and got out, he looked over at Savage.

"So, what did we learn today, Savage?" he asked, testing her. No matter how long they'd been aurors, he still tested his men when he was personally involved in a case. Besides, he thought she was about ready for a recruit of her own to mentor, and this would be a good test of whether his feeling on that was correct.

Thinking it over Gray looked over at Robards with a wry smile. “Today we learned that either there are those out there who know more about what is going on than we do or Harry Potter is being protected by a lot of people.” She wasn’t sure that was the answer he wanted to hear but that was her impression of the situation.

“That and we should never assume especially when it comes to muggles.”

Gawain held the door for her, stepping back just as a flash of light sizzled past them both to hit the tree outside.

His hand was on his wand before he really registered what had happened, and he was in a crouch. Looking over at Savage, he was glad to see her in the same position.

A quick glance told him that the street was mostly deserted, so the flash of light hadn't garnered much attention.

A shout - of pain - filtered out into the street, and after meeting Savage's eyes, he nodded. They were going in.

As she got out of the taxi a flash of light went past her. Immediately her instincts fell into place and she rolled into a crouching defensive position wand out. When she looked up Robards was in the same position.

At his indication she followed him in ready to take up the fight. What a day this is turning into

The screaming was coming from the back room. Gawain cast a charm on the door to keep it locked and shut - the last thing they needed was civilians bumbling into the mess.

As they approached, he could make out snatches of a conversation underneath the pain-filled cries.

"... proof ... helping Mudbloods ... last seen here ... deny?"

The screaming increased, and Gawain bit back a growl. He should send Savage for backup, but just now, he wasn't sure how much he could trust the Ministry. He gave her a nod and raised his wand in preparation for moving into the room.

He mouthed the words One, Two, and on Three, they both moved.

It was chaos, there were screams coming from the back room. From the little she could hear it was obvious that this was a Death Eater attack.

Keeping her eyes on Robards she waited for him to give the order to attack, hopefully they wouldn't be too late. When Robards gave the sign she went for it.

They obviously took the Death Eaters by surprise - Gawain's first hex caught one (there were three) full in the head, and he went own like a ton of bricks. It was protocol to give them a warning first, but a hexing counted as announcing themselves, right?

Eunice was on the floor, blood trickling from her nose as she gasped weakly, moving a few inches in an attempt to get away. His jaw tightened at how painful it was for her move, but he didn't have much time to think about that, not when return fire was now heading his way.

Ducking behind a shelf, he called out to the men. "This is the MLE. Throw down your wands and come out with your hands up!"

Gray sent off stunner that winged one of the Death Eaters, the wizard stumbled but didn't fall. She could see Eunice on the floor bleeding and her heart went out to the witch. Hopefully they would get to her in time.

Hiding behind a shelf Grey kept her wand ready as Robards identified himself.

A bark of laughter met his demand, and he braced himself to make another assault on them. Crouching down, he let a stunner off, receiving a nasty hex in return that grazed his cheek.

Fuck, that hurt.

"I'm out!" one of them yelled, followed by a tell-tale pop.

Out? No!

Launching himself around the shelf, he was just in time to see a masked and robed figure grab hold of Eunice's arm and disappear with her. The others had already gone.

"Fuck!"

It was clear that none of the Death Eaters had any respect for them. She managed not to gasp as Robards was nicked by a hex. Almost as fast as it had begun it was over and the Death Eaters had apparated out taking Eunice with them.

Crawling over to Robards she looked him over to make sure there wasn't anything more than the scratch to the face. "Are you alright sir?" She asked hesitantly. Knowing full well that things weren't right.

Gawain looked over the ruins of the once-neat stockroom. He took a breath, standing up fully, and nodded to Savage.

"I'm fine," he said shortly, running a hand through his hair. "We need the boys from the evidence unit out here, on the double. Go back the office and bring them back. I'll wait here and secure the scene."

It was all he could do not to kick at one of the boxes, hands shaking in impotent rage. He'd done nothing - nothing - to help Eunice. She was as good as dead now - and why? Had their presence here brought the Death Eaters in? Was it a coincidence?

Gray stood up and thought about brushing herself off before she figured there really wasn't a point. Nodding she looked around the store, shaken by how in such a short amount of time everything had changed.

As she apparated out she gave Robards a sympathetic smile and glimpsed him kicking a box. Hopefully they would get to the bottom things soon.
