Rp: A strong shoulder to cry on
Date: 14 September 1997
Characters: Janelle Dorny & Caleb Warrington
Location: Leaky Cauldron
Status: Private
Summary: Janelle lost her job and Caleb offered her a shoulder to cry on.
Completion: Complete

It was still early yet to receive word from any of the few resumes she had dropped off on Saturday, and she was sure there would be a checking of blood status for good measure, after all they didn’t want some muggleborn working for them under their nose with the way the Ministry regulations were going. Janelle needed company she needed someone to cheer her up and who better than an old friend and housemate to the job.

Janelle had arrived to the Leaky Cauldron a few minutes before their meeting time. She found them a table and placed her order for a glass of wine. She even asked for a clean glass, as she felt it necessary and didn’t care if it was deemed as impolite. She waited at the table for Caleb and her glass of wine in a clean glass.

He shrugged. "Any time, Janelle."

"I know. Although why you enjoyed old biddy witch central is beyond me." He watched her carefully. She was more down at the mouth than he could remember her being in quite a while. "You'll find something better and with a company that has the right background."

"I didn't think I was going to enjoy it either but some of those old gals have quite the stories," Janelle forced a smile at the memory. "You're right though I will find another job and something better. I was told of a front desk position at the Prophet." Janelle thought she would fit just right in at a position like that. "I am applying on Monday."

He took a long pull at his pint. It had been a long week and tomorrow would start another one. He didn't object to the Ministry's new objectives; he just wished they'd slow down about it.

"The Prophet?" he raised a single expressive eyebrow. "Really. That's not bad."

"It is the best job I have found right now and definitely one I don't want to pass up," Janelle couldn't be choosy with her employment otherwise she would be out on her butt with all her things if she couldn't make her rent. She probably had two months saved up tat was if she didn't spend anything. Financial planning was not her strongest suit.

"Enough about me, how are you?" She didn't exactly want to dwell on her situation too much tonight.

"The same as it has been all year. Training, training and more training. At least the book work is mostly done and I'm out in the field now." And if rumors were correct, he would be out hunting running Muggleborns sooner or later.

"Well at least you are out in the field now," Janelle said as she ran her index finger along the rim of her wine glass, and eventually just let her hand fall. "So how are the Ministry changes affecting you?" Janelle didn't know much about the changes besides for what the paper was talking about and what she overheard.

"It hasn't yet." He waved his hand in a throw away gesture. "It's not like they can question my blood status."

He drained him pint and signaled for another.

"As far as the rest goes, I have yet to receive my marching orders. But I am a Hit Wizard. I'm sure you can guess what those orders will be."

"No that is one thing they can't," Janelle nodded her head before sipping at her wine. She placed her glass back down and nodded her head. "I can guess what those orders would be. Do they bother you?" Janelle was curious as to how he felt about the idea of having to hunt down Muggleborns. Janelle had this feeling it would not be a bother to her.

"Not particularly. I just hunt down who I'm told to bring in. The rest is up to the system." If the Muggleborns were stupid enough not to flee the country before it came time for their trials, what happened to them was their own fault. The writing had been on the walls for months now.

"Well that is a good outlook, and I have a similar view." Janelle really did see it as their own ruddy fault if they were dragged in punished for running. "I think we should move on to a more cheerful subject don't you think." Janelle looked at her wine glass and held it up to signal she wanted another.

"You're looking to me for a cheerful topic?" he asked incredulously. Cheerful and Caleb Warrington did not generally go together.

"Um, you seeing anyone?"

"Nope not seeing anyone," Janelle smirked at him, "What are you interested?" She raised an eyebrow as spoke with a slightly flirtatious tone. It wouldn't be a first or last time she had used that flirtatious tone with Caleb.

"Sorry, doll. I still don't date witches that are scarier than I am. A bloke has his pride."

"I'm scary?" Janelle looked hurt and placed her hand over heart. "You wound me Caleb." She shook her hair as she sat up straight. "Who said anything about dating?" Janelle winked before finishing of her glass of wine just as their second rounds came their way.

He gave her a look. "If I had wounded you, there would have been a wine glass shattering on my forehead."

"You know me, old fashioned fellow. I make all the girls take me out for dinner and dancing before they lure me to their beds." Sadly, he almost wished that was true. It would mean there had actually been girls in his life in more than a platonic way.

"Oh you know me too well," she smirked almost proudly as she leaned back in her seat more and crossed one knee over the other.

"Oh wouldn't old fashioned be taking the ladies for dinner?" She curled some hair behind her ear. "So would you like some dinner? I cannot promise a dance through," she paused, "or that I would pay for you."

"I'm old fashioned and cheap. I never pass up the opportunity for free food."

"I wouldn't object to dinner. It's been a long time since breakfast." He needed to start remembering to carry food of some sort with him. Skipping meals made him grumpier than usual.

"Sorry to drop this bit of information on you but you are never going to get a girl unless you wine and dine her."

"Well I guess we better get some menus then shouldn't we," Janelle said softly before getting up and grabbing a few from Tom and heading back over and handing one to Caleb. Janelle couldn't help but have the added swagger to her walk when in the presences of a cute guy.

Sitting back down she opened up the menu and started to look over.

Not being blind nor dead, Caleb watched her all the way to the bar and back. When she sat back down, he took the offered menu.

"I can wine and dine," he said grumpily, "but most birds also require a little called time. That's been on the scarce side lately."

"Well you made time for me, so I am sure you can make time for someone who is less scary than me," she ran her finger down the menu was she read over the food they could order. "Unless I am that scary and intimidating that you felt you had no choice."

Shepherd's pie. That was what he needed. The menu was very nearly unnecessary.

He looked at her, trying to find a way to say that she had sounded like she needed to talk to someone without actually saying that and not only ruining his reputation but also possibly draw hexes. "You're hot and available. And you won't read anything into drinks at the Leaky."

"Thank you Caleb," she said with a soft smile, he had complimented her so she figured that was the right thing to say. "And you are right I won't read anything into it." Janelle closed her menu having decided on a salad and looked to Caleb. "Still thank you for coming out." Janelle hated to admit that she needed someone right now if only to distract her from her lack of job and how it was effecting her. Janelle had liked Misty Missy and now she was gone, probably to never come back. Janelle hated that she missed a muggleborn and she would never admit to it.

"Just stating the obvious." He shrugged, a bit uncomfortable at being thanked.

"Well do you know what you want?" Janelle sipped at her wine again. "Also are you dessert person?" Janelle was but she never ate the whole thing and would only order one if she had someone to share with.
