Lila was impressed by the woman's casual ability to browbeat the thugs and shame them into leaving, albeit with a few dark looks thrown at Lila and Nina. "Thank you for that," she said.
"Hmm," the woman said. "You're English?"
"Yes," Lila said.
She might have said more, but the woman continued, "This is not a good time for ladies to be traveling alone through the land. Especially not English ladies. I advise you to return home as quickly as you may."
"That is exactly our intention," Lila said. She knew a dismissal when she heard one. "Thank you for your help, and good day."
She led Nina out of the shop, pausing for a moment to make sure no one lurked in ambush. "Well, that was exciting," she said. "Let's hope we don't have any more excitement while we're here..."
