What: Gin Charlie’s putting up the tournament posters....and rosters. He’s more than a little drunk and just a little ticked off.

Somebody had gotten a poster from Outside the Ludus, and had taped it up on his office door.
It was an advertising poster, black-and-white with red letters, same as the symbol that the Others had once changed history under as a battle standard. Gin Charlie remembered raising that standard in victory, a very long time ago. Now only the colours remained, the symbol forgotten.
The poster had an old, old picture of him, sepia-toned and faded, back when he’d had dark hair unmarked with grey, his nose broken only once, and his face only lightly scarred and without wrinkles. It was contrasted with a picture of him at the height of a later career, his nose smashed and his face slashed, hair cut short and blood absolutely everywhere. The poster proclaimed the return of Charlie Plaith (their wrecked interpretation of battle “plaid”) and it listed off the series of matches he would run through over three days. It was an astonishing schedule and he had little time to get back up to full fighting strength.
He liked being retired.
He did not like being yanked up out of it into fighting on such short notice.
He was tired of fighting.
Gin Charlie put back another long pull of his gin - taste of juniper so familiar - and tacked up a paper to the wall of the commons, detailing the fight schedule for the whole floor. It was a poster-sized piece of paper, and one hand still held his gin bottle as he inserted the sharp little pins into the wall. |
