Parent teacher night
Characters: Dahlia and teacher night folk
When: September 9th, Friday Night
Location: The school
Dahlia hadn’t liked how tired TJ had looked that morning. She’d tried to find a good way to ask about it that didn’t directly shine a light at his exhaustion but…it hadn’t worked super well. In the end it kind of had boiled down to he looked tired. She wasn’t surprised by his reasoning and really she couldn’t even say anything for it. She probably looked tired too. The night before she hadn’t really slept that well. The news reports about the deceased boy kept playing through her thoughts over and over again. They called it an animal attack. They’d said her sister could have died by that too. It was one excuse they went with, until the stories simply painted it all as bad wounds from the car accident. Dahlia knew better though and the boy’s death….clung to her mind all day long. It didn’t help that later that day, she’d overheard talk of another person having died out in the fog. How could she not feel like a giant weight was in her gut? How could she just…dismiss it all? There was something going on and she had no idea who to talk to about it. She didn’t even know how to bring it up without simply sounding utterly crazy again. She’d already gotten looks like that enough when the accident had happened. She knew the police wouldn’t believe her, because they hadn’t then. So what was there to do? Hope it went away? That seemed like a worthless option but she wasn’t sure what the alternative was? Take TJ away? She had thought about that after Dai’s death and a vague mention at it hadn’t gone over well. She didn’t think it would now either and honestly, she wasn’t sure she was ready to leave this house that had been Dai’s, yet either. The day passed in a slow blur. Dahlia did her work and helped people out setting up for the movie night. She answered the phone and walk in questions and prepped a reading section for the kids that might not want to watch the movie. She was so focused on simple movements and distracting actions that she was late leaving by almost twenty minutes. Once there she made sure that both TJ and she had some dinner before showering and changing for the teacher conferences. She tried to let the dark thoughts go but they kept circling all the same. All she knew for certain was that if this kept up, there was no way she was agreeing to TJ having a paper route. She’d almost told him yes the other day, after speaking with the newspaper company. But now…now she didn’t think she could say yes. Dahlia thanked Jake for driving when he knocked and all of them got into the car and drove off. The kids were safe at the community center and Jake and she made their way to the school. Of course once they got there, Dahlia really wasn’t entirely sure what to do. There were set times for things and each teacher had a room but as they were a touch early, most parents were milling around talking to one another. Dahlia had never been overly good with social situations and though TJ went to the school and Dahlia had lived in town for years, she really didn’t know any of these people. Dai had. But Dahlia…not so much. She recognized familiar stares though, as she found a corner to stand in and wait for people to start to disperse; a free glass of juice in her hands. They were the stares from people that had known Dai and knew who she was. It was difficult for them to not recognize her, her and her twin had looked a lot alike. She tried to not fidget as she waited. |
