Jess never experienced a real migraine until he got to this freak show of a town. He thought Stars Hollow was bad, but being told he was brought to some place called Storybrooke..? By magic? He thought it was totally unbelievable. Even worse, he was there without his walkman, book, or car. Yes, his car was shitty, but it was his shitty car that he'd just put a lot of money into buying and fixing up. To top everything off, Rory was there. Yes, he loved her. But he also spent the past year in California after not contacting her. He'd had no idea what to say to her. He had been an ass before he left due to flunking out of school, tried to pressure her into sex, and then he got kicked out of Luke's, and learned his dad came to town and didn't even talk to him. He figured she'd be better off without him, but he couldn't help but call her every now and then, even if it was just to hear her voice.
Liz told him Luke had his car, which really pissed him off, especially when he found out Luke hadn't taken care of it and it broke down, leaving him stranded in town for the day. Luckily Luke tried to make up for it by 'going to stay with Rachel' so he could sleep in the apartment, instead of his car. His mom was dating some guy that she'd probably flake on again, and he told Rory he loved her. He'd given her a few seconds, but the look on her face told him that she probably wasn't going to say it back. Or say anything he wanted to hear. So he left.
Jess apologized and they made plans to get coffee the next morning. He'd luckily found a bookstore and music store to help him sleep that night, before making his way to some place called Granny's diner. It seemed kinda like Luke's, but without the temperamental lumberjack behind the counter. He found a place to sit down, ordering them both coffee before opening The Catcher in the Rye, reading to pass the time until she arrived.
