Healing was something Max had done little of in the last decade. He'd tried and failed too many times with his friends. His family. Death was something not even he could heal. Some wounds were genuinely mortal and Max was not all-powerful. In this case, it sounded as if he were healing a wound which was not mortal, merely long-lasting or persistent. He was curious in a way he hadn't been in years about the alien he was going to be meeting.
Aliens existed from more than his home world. Max had learned that the hard way. His family, his friends, the world he knew was lost thanks to aliens who had an interest in the destruction of Antar. His home world was entirely gone. All the memories he had of that place were nothing more than that---memories. They would never be more.
He wondered how long it had been since Lapis had been to her home world. 'Gem' seemed a strange name for a species, but what did he know? He had been raised among humans, taught fear, trained to hide. For all Max knew, Gems were warriors of a race beyond his own's powers or abilities. Max was not arrogant enough to believe his kind to be the greatest the universe had to offer.
Too many people had died in front of him for him to think that way.
"Hello? Lapis?" he called out as he entered the address she'd given him.
It seemed no one locked their doors in this town. Max wasn't sure how to think about that. All he knew was it felt strange. Unusually comforting despite how it should have felt nothing more than unsafe.
"It's Max. Max Evans. I'm here to see what I can do to help."
That was genuinely an understatement. Max knew he could heal her. He had no reason to doubt that. His only fear was what it would do to her for him to heal her.
