With a completely straight face, Cody replied. “That’s my big bad secret, I’m actually a pyro,” he paused. “And it does become problematic with my job and everything.” He was definitely just playing along, joking about all of this. “Some might say I was, yeah,” he said this with a shrug, more humble about his heroic tendencies – it wasn’t like he went out seeking people to save or heroic things to do. “And that’s good, because I’m fairly certain I can’t change that.” Well, maybe he could, but he didn’t want to. “Nope, definitely not encouraging her. I’ll do a proper fire safety PSA and everything when I talk to her.” The last thing they needed was for the forest to turn into a blazing fireball.
“That’s another thing we’ve got in common,” Cody just hadn’t ever had time to attend any, but even if he had had the time he didn’t really think he would have. “Honestly, I think parenting can only truly be learned once you’ve got a child to actually parent.” That was just his opinion, but he had always been more of a hands on learner than anything else. “I’m sure you will, and I look forward to that day.” Cody smirked, nudging her shoulder right back. “No problem, it’s always nice to hear that you’re doing a good job.”
Three weeks, that still just struck Cody as insane. They’d been stuck on this damn island that long; he hoped it wouldn’t last much longer though. He smiled slightly when she talked about her family, it wasn’t really often that anyone got a chance to talk about this kind of thing on the island. “That would leave her a lot of roles to fill,” he wanted to ask why it was she only kept in contact with her aunt, but now probably wasn’t the time to dig deeper into Raine’s past – not with the girls racing around and the chance of just about anyone overhearing them.
Cody frowned as he was reminded of Chloe wandering off. That incident had made it all to clear that it would be just as easy for Zoey or Sydney to venture off on their own – all he hoped was that neither one of the girls decided to do that. “I’m right there with you in the hoping department,” he remarked. “One was honestly one too many.” And thankfully Chloe had been found unharmed.
It was hard for Cody to not study her closely as she replied, her words were honest and he had a feeling that she probably hadn’t drank enough water if she was starting to feel woozy. “This is just a guess but I think you’ve got heat exhaustion, or the starting of it at least,” which he spent enough time around heat to know the signs. “So yes, you should head to the med tent before it gets worse.”
