Candy is in the hospital, staring off out of the window and ignoring the baby crying in the bassinet beside her. Steve walks into the room and takes the baby to feed and soothe him. He fills out the paperwork on his own and drives the mother and baby back to the apartment complex where all the other prostitutes stay. He brings the baby inside and leaves. The baby cries in the car seat as Candy walks past it and slams her bedroom door behind her. Some of the other ladies in the building come in and pick up the baby to care for him.
Sam is a toddler. Riley changes his diaper and leaves. Sam waddles over to his mother who's helping herself to a bowl of cereal. He reaches out to touch her leg and gets slapped so hard he flies to the ground. He screams and cries. She snatches him up by the arm and screams at him to shut up but he keeps crying. She starts smacking him all over his body and locks him in a closet.
Sam is four. He sits quietly in his bedroom, whispering to a toy dinosaur that he's playing with. When he hears footsteps in the hall, he hides the toy under his pillow. He can hear his father's voice outside so he peeks through the crack in his door. Steve walks over and opens the door all the way, revealing the black eye and bruises on Sam's face. Steve clenches his fists and attacks Candy. Sam runs to Steve and tries to pull him off of her but gets knocked down in the process. He can't help her even though he keeps trying to. Steve leaves Candy beaten on the floor and takes Sam out for ice cream.
Sam is six. He gets off the bus but runs past his apartment door and runs to Odessa's place. She's in her bedroom so he sits on her couch and takes out a workbook. A man on a chair across the room waves at him. Sam smiles gently at him and waves back. The man gets up from the chair and sits down next to Sam on the couch. They introduce themselves and start chatting. The clip jumps forward to show the man kissing Sam on the mouth. Odessa runs into the room and chases him out. She checks on Sam who stands there crying in shock and confusion. She chews her lip and calls Steve. The clip jumps forward to Sam witnessing the man get dragged back into the apartment and killed. Steve is on a warpath. Sam tries to protect the girls from his father's anger but is unsuccessful.
Montage of clips featuring Candy: Sam being dragged out of his bed at night by the hair and beaten. Sam being forced to eat food off the floor. Sam being forced to take freezing cold showers. Candy screaming in Sam's face. Sam being slapped, beaten, kicked, punched, and even bitten on numerous occasions. Sam being locked in a closet for hours. Sam being made to stand in the snow and then thrown into steaming baths. Sam's head being held under water in the bathtub. Sam being forced to eat spoiled food. Sam being forced to drink cleansers. Sam is forced to kill a baby bird he snuck into his bedroom. Candy laughs at Sam when Steve doesn't show up for Christmases, birthdays, and other holidays. Candy breaks Sam's arm in a fit of rage after Steve drops off a belated present one year for Christmas.
Steve beats Candy when he appears in clips. Sam fights for her each time and loses each time. Steve takes Sam out for ice cream or dinner on occasion. Steve ruffles Sam's hair and tells him he's proud. Steve hugs Sam and brings gifts for him from time to time and then leaves Sam alone with Candy, who retaliates against the boy violently.
The other girls in the apartment complex are often seen in the video being kind to Sam and caring for him, but they don't intervene in the abuse. As he grows, he often fights on their behalf when they have abusive clients.
A clip shows Candy passed out drunk and unresponsive on her bed. A young Sam carefully sneaks inside and checks her pulse. Then he slides down next to her, holding his breath. He carefully wraps her arms around him and lies there until he sees her leg twitch. He quickly and carefully slips out of the room. He does it again on two more occasions, but the last time he tries, she wakes up and beats him badly; breaking his nose with a glass bottle.
Cherry also is seen throughout the video, growing up with Sam. They play together, hide together, and hug each other. As they grow, Sam is often seen fighting men on her behalf and sharing his food with her. They sneak into theaters, the beach, and playgrounds after dark. Sometimes she slips into his bedroom through his window and just sits there quietly as he does his schoolwork. Sam does her homework for her if she ever has it with her.
Throughout most of the video, Sam is alone. He spends his free time doing secret math puzzles. He hides his schoolwork away from his mother who will destroy it and berate him if she finds it. At school he's invisible. He sneaks alcohol into school with him and drinks it all day either by himself or Cherry if she's around.
Once he sees his Dad walking down the street with Peggy and his other kids. They lock eyes but Steve pretends he didn't see him. Steve comes by later that night with a treat and Sam hugs him. He meets Tom and Nicole and they connect with each other. Before long, all of Steve's children have met.
As Sam grows, he becomes more and more violent and apt to fight. He only fights boys and men and only ever in defense of a girl or woman. When he finally is old enough to move out of his mother's apartment with his father's consent, he does without a word or warning. He goes to college and becomes popular very quickly. His dorm room is pristine but empty, like his bedroom growing up. He's frequently pulled over for driving drunk but is always let off after they recognize him. He stays in loose contact with Cherry who flits in and out of his life, but never sees his mother again.
