.
[Fifteen-year-old Janie stares down at her bracelet and thumbs over the "best friends forever charm". She's seated on a couch next to her mother and brother, across from her sits her father and sister, all regarding her seriously.]
But she's the only friend I've ever had. [Janie sniffles softly.] What we do is far more important than friendship, Sweetheart. [Her mother squeezes her hand gently.] You know what you have to do. I promise, it's hard the very first time you have to put down a friend, but after that it's just like putting down anything else.
You want me to do it? [Her brother shrugs.] No no, [Her father shakes his head.] she can do it. I know she can do it. She's done this a hundred times, this one is no different.
[Janie sniffles again and nods.] I'll do it.
Good girl. [Her mother smiles and smoothes Janie's hair back.] We're proud of you.
[The next day Janie is sitting on a girl's bed. The girl flops down next to her, she's wearing a matching "best friends forever" bracelet.]
I totally thought you were going to freak out. [She smiles gently at Janie.] I've heard stranger things, believe it or not. [Janie smiles brightly.] Like did you know the northern leopard frog swallows its prey using its eyes? It's true! Now if a frog can swallow its food with its eyes, how can I be surprised that my friend's a werewolf? Anything is possible. [The girl laughs and shakes her head.] You make me feel normal, weirdo.
[Janie laughs too.] Oh no, never that. Normal is dreadful and dull. In all my life that's the one thing I promise I'll never allow myself to become.
I actually believe that. [The girl teases. Janie nudges her lightly with her shoulder.] Sophia?
Hm?
I really do love your company. I'll never forget this moment, I'm taking a picture of it in my mind right now.
[Sophia rolls off the bed and reaches underneath to pull out a box of nail polish.] I love you t-- [She's cut off abruptly when Janie slides off the bed and kicks her hard in the ribs. Sophia tumbles across the floor. Before she can catch her breath, Janie straddles her, grabs her by the hair and holds a knife to her throat. Sophia's eyes glow gold but only for a moment before fading into a lifeless brown as blood trickles from her neck. Janie sighs deeply.]
Don't hate me, Sophia. I don't think I could go on if you did.
[She stands and bends over Sophia's arm, using a flick of the wrist to cut loose the bracelet around Sophia's.]
I'll keep it forever. [She smiles sadly down at Sophia's corpse and blows a kiss before slipping out of the girls window and starting back home.]
