Dallas didn’t realize how much he had missed his sister until she arrived. She was dressed in one of her elegant dressed that she was determined to wear always despite the idea very old fashioned for the time. Her expression held that classic upturned nose pensive look. Her mouth quirked slightly in a smile as he eyes fell on her brother. A quirked smile was the best one could expect from his sister. She had to be hard all the time back home to be taken seriously so any small smile or “sign of weakness” was unacceptable. When she first arrived she had a brief audience with Ms. Menides. After she came out she linked her arm with her brother’s and let him start on the grand tour of the school.
Organizing this visit took a time and half. He had to promise that she’d behave and wouldn’t bother any of the students. He agreed even though he sort of wanted her and Davian to meet. Not to threaten him but to formally extend an invitation to join the commune. He only prayed that he wasn’t rude to her…her temper was far worse than his own. She wouldn’t hesitate to throw a fireball at the boy and Dallas would have to jump in the way and would probably die and that would suck.
As he led her around she looked around with that same regal look. Beneath that she seemed to look slightly bored or unimpressed. Damn her and her insanely high standards. It was a school what was she expecting everything in gold and marble…like their ridiculous house in the commune.
“Awful lot of humans here,” Lori said in a slightly cautious tone and gripped his arm a bit tighter. Was she…scared? That confused Dallas, his sister, Lori, feared by the whole commune was scared by some humans at the school.
“Yeah Lori, there are humans, not hunters. They’re witches, druids, mages, like Chance and Adam and Doyle. Some of them also have psychic abilities like Emma and Claire. Don’t act so jumpy.”
“I am not jumpy I was just confused.”
“Of course I just want to assure you that Tree and Ori will be perfectly safe here,” Dallas patted her hand to reassure her. He could tell the Lori was trying to find a reason to keep her children at home despite being told it would be best for them to have somewhat a normal school environment for social development. He agreed with what others said. It would be good for them to see what lies outside the commune. They were half, like himself, so they would be the ones who could go aboveground because of their human appearance.
“I was not concerned I was just making an observation.”
“Whatever you say , sis.”
“Don’t you dare be condescending to me.”
“I’m just trying to let you know you worrying about your children’s safety is perfectly normal, perfectly….human.” He chuckled at the grimace that came to her face at the term. Despite not hating human…being married to one…she did not like being referred to one. Found it insulting.
“You know I hate it when you refer to me as human, I am a demon, not human. I respect them but I am not one of them.”
“I know, I’m your brother it’s my job to bug you.” She fixed him with a hard stare as he shot her a bright smile. Her glare broke as she gave a little smile,
“I hate that I can never stay mad at you for too long.”
“And I am grateful for that, I would hate to have to bring up the fact that I rose you from the dead.”
“You know I am indebted to you for life because of that.”
“And you don’t have to be, you’re my sister, if I knew it would take both of our immortalities I’d do it again.” He was surprised to see her smile grow and she gave a little hug to his arm.
“Now, let’s move on from that touching moment, I’m getting sick. How are your students?” Dallas gave a brief rundown of his classed not being too specific about any of the students. He was sure that also fell under his promise to Ms. Menides.
“So Doyle is doing well I assume?”
“Yeah,” Dallas nodded, “Sure he seems to still stick to Claire but I see him attempting to branch out, which is good. Also his control still needs work but he’s improving. He shows promise.”
“Chance will be pleased, he worries about him,” Lori replied, “You’re also in charge of one of the houses correct? How are they.”
“They’re kids after my own heart, snarky and wonderful,” he laughed at her rolling her eyes, “but honestly they’re great but there is this one, it’s like he wants to get kicked out. I get he had a hard childhood but shit, so did I. Just because he messed up and got banished from the commune doesn’t meant he gets to act like a little shit to everyone.” He felt Lori freeze at his words and Dallas realized he said too much.
“Banished from a commune did you say? He’s a demon? It’s not the one from Las Vegas, the failed hunter one?” Dallas’s silence spoke more than words,
“Lori…”
“I demand to see him.” Dallas’s rebuttal died at those words. Her orders were orders, he couldn’t go against them. He sighed,
“Alright, he’s probably in his room. He doesn’t do well with authority so please don’t lose your temper, I beg of you.” Lori gave Dallas what he assumed was trying to be an innocent look,
“Dalllas, have some faith in your baby sister. “ Her words did nothing to comfort him as they made their way to Kitsune dorm. He sat with her in the common area confident they’d run into the snarky demon sooner or later.
